Let's set up the local development environment. We need PHP, a Web Server, MySQL & Code Editor. There are many ways one could install these, you could do it manually, you can use "all in one solution" like XAMPP / MAMP / WAMP or you could use a better alternative like virtual machines or Docker. In this video, I will be showing you how to get PHP up and running using XAMPP but in the second section, we will use Docker. In addition to setting up the local environment, you will learn what a webserver is & how it works.

As a developer coding in PHP for 20 years I can say that this is the best series to help people who want's to learn PHP. You are doing a great job dude. I can only suggest you to add advanced business things. Like behavioural tests (Behat etc) or the things related with working in a team working with git. Debugging with Xdebug, profiling with Backfire, concurrent async php etc. Wish you a great 2024 and happy new year... PHP Rulez ;)

For some reason my comment that I left here a couple of days ago has disappeared) Thank you so much for your wonderful course! You present the material in great detail without omitting important details and nuances. Really deep dive into the language. Maybe you can find time and record a video on how to set up a working environment using these technologies: php + phpstorm + docker + git on wsl 2. wsl 2 is a great tool that greatly simplifies local development. Microsoft has done a lot of work recently to optimize wsl and its performance is impressive. There are almost no materials on the web covering this issue - how to set up a working environment with php + phpstorm + docker + git on wsl 2.

Thank you. KZfaq sometimes randomly removes comments, I don't know why. Seems like it's happening to other KZfaqrs as well. There is a video on docker in second section. It's not specific to wsl2 but should be a good start. I'll see if I can make a video about wsl2.

Hey Gio, just found this amazing course. I am really looking forward learning everything you are teaching. I do have a question. Currently I am using a lightspeed server, which seems to be different from apache and nginx. Will this affect any of my learnings?

Hey, welcome & thank you. I haven't used light speed server so I'm not sure but I don't think you should have any issues as long as you have PHP set up and working. We cover Apache config & in second section nginx/php-fpm with Docker but you can set it up using your server, goal is to have PHP working and ability to have php.ini

HI! I'm going to learn PHP from this course. One thing that I think this course lacks is a explanation of how to setup xDegugger. I stumbled upon this thing some time ago and after a hours of tryings just wasn't be able to make it work. My system is Ubuntu. Everything was done accordingly to the official manual. The creator of the xDebugger themself says that itstallation process could be tricky on some systems.

I did not include it in 1st or 2nd section because its more of an advanced topic. So expect a video in third section about xdebug soon :)

It is perfectly valid hello,world! In PHP you don't need to type all of that class public static int main and other symbols from exploded ascii factory to create a hello world program!

You could use Laragon instead of XMPP. Allowing you to use very simple environment and at the same time use automatic URL rewrite and also switch between different PHP and Database versions.

Thanks for this one. but what are u referring to as "production" when u say that xampp isn't good for production? u mean like it isn't good for building web applications for clients (like if you are working professionally). I'm a bit concerned cause I installed docker earlier on, and wsl 2 or so too, and my system (widows 10 OS) became so slow and started having issues so I had to reinstall my windows OS.

Production means when you deploy your app online (host it), so yea like when you make a website for your clients. For local development it's fine.

Hey, you'll need to add the interpreter, you should use docker-compose and select the container instead of just Docker. Google "add PHP interpreter from docker compose phpstorm" there should be many guides

Course material is provided later in the series, there is really not much to provide in these initial episodes, it is expected & recommended that you follow along the course by writing it yourself. Once we get to the project & more advanced topics the source code is provided.

There could be multiple reasons. Are you using XAMPP? Is apache running? Is it using port 80? Where is your source code located at, etc.

so at the localhost step it just gave me the "This site can't be reached" google screen and I am really confused, considering that this is the second step and I know I did the first one right (downloading xampp). The only difference is that I didn't get an error message when I first opened xampp

Did you start the apache in XAMPP? Also try to add slash at the end so localhost/ and see if that works
