Here is an easy to follow "How To" on installing your rings properly on the Honda Horizontal Engine Piston. Good info for Honda Mini Bikes such as CT70 Z50 SL70 XL70 CL70 ATC70 TRX70
Good info for any piston kit such as Stock Honda, TBparts 88cc kit or the CHP Motorsports 88cc kit or most pit bikes etc.

Awesome video, really clear and all the important details. The bit about the 1 piece oil control ring helped me, I've not dealt with a one piece before an was a little unsure where to situate the gap.

I'm seeing online that the stock, single oil ring gap clearance should be 0.0059"-0.01575". In these rebuild kits that come with a 3 piece oil ring, should the gap for the 2 skinny rings be the same as the recommended gap for the stock, single oil ring? Do you find that these kits typically need to be gapped or are they usually pretty good out of the box?

I don't understand orienting the rings at 120° as they can move freely in the grooves, so surely they can end up anywhere when the engine runs

I agree. I think we "wish" them to stay like we installed. Those engines vibrating the environment around them. I don't believe they stay like they installed.

That’s a small piston you have there. That’s not the size for a 1969 to 1980 ct70 correct? That size piston would be for something newer or long piston rod? Just asking, thanks.

It is a bigger piston than stock. This is a CT70 up bore piston (52mm) from CHP Motorsports 88cc Top End kit. Stock CT70 is 47mm jug bore and stock z50 is 39mm jug bore

I accidentally installed the black ring on the top and the silver outlined ring in the middle because the black ring was the ONLY one that had any kind of writings on it. My question is how big of a deal is this and should I tear it back down and put the black in the middle? The engine has not yet been started since the rebuilt but is all torqued to the 9 ft lbs already. Thanks for any response!

Yes. Swap them into correct placement before running. They are designed for specific purposes and must be installed correctly

Im not sure what they spec. Standard rule of thumb is .004" end gap per 1" of bore

You know where they go and direction they face. You have no clue what a ring land or ring gap is tho. You also have no clue how to physically install a ring (place your thumb on the ring like this...LOL) That is not how it's done, have you ever taken a mechanic course? Ring gap and end gap...any clue what that is?

First off, I checked who you are - The reputation speaks volumes, so that is that...Now to my response - Fine, ring land vs groove - you got me on improper vocabulary in video. Go start your own channel and let me see you do stuff in detail. I'm sure I'll be able to pick you apart too, but I don't care to...and a simple search on YT first video to pop up - Summit Racing channel shows the exact ring install technique and so on down the line. So you're saying I can't use my thumb to hold the ring? - Lol. Here is my comment to you. Instead of trying to put me down, while don't you try and explain yourself so others can learn. You got your approach to me all wrong...And why don't you answer your questions and explain it to me. I'm curious if you even know?

All these engines share alot in common. Parts can interchange, with some exceptions, but don't do that without fully understanding the intricasies - Z50 ct70 sl70 xl70 atc70 Z50r cl70
