How do you do it if the gear cable is coming out the side?

You either want the gear cable connected and adjusted or no gear cable installed. It it's installed and adjusted correctly, it won't be protruding out of the side.

I don’t get how I get them on with the cable coming out the side. All videos on KZfaq have no cable

The shift cable typically has to be removed temporarily to get the hood on a shifter with the side exit cable.
