You made my life 100x easier. I spent 2 days trying to figure out the terminal to install stuff 😬 first time Linux user coming from windows is a HUGEEEE change but thanks to windows 10 destroying my 2 laptops which now run Linux.. I am never going back to windows and quite happy with Linux so far. Thank you for the solid video.

Thanks Bobby! I didn't want to go into specific details of any one manager, nor did I want to make a 40 minute video to cover them all. I figured a general explanation about how they work generally would be easy enough for most to pick up. After the last person asking me for help sent me a link to the files they downloaded, I figured this was needed. :)

Excellent. Take my bow for keeping it simple. The reason why Windows users just don't use or hate Linux on their working machine is, the way Linux's experts present Linux to new or Windows user. They just ask to install Ubuntu. Open terminal and *Blah Blah* No average user want to use command prompt. I agree you can do hell lot of things using terminal. But really does anyone want to start with it? This makes impression to new user that Linux means command prompt. 🤷🏻‍♂️ No one teach concept. One must consider that no user want to use terminal until he is done with GUI methods. Terminal is for advanced user, not the beginner who can't (or don't want to) memories commands. Average user use Word, Excel, Power Point, Photoshop, Chrome, OBS Studio, Hitfilm Express kind of software. There was plenty of free software available on various repositories. To use these software, an average user even don't need (to be more precise *Don't WANT* ) *Terminal* or command prompt.

VG ... Damn, you understand and explain this well. I'm a long-term Windows user and quite good, not a newbie. And, I do 100% agree with you. Because I am trying to develop my Linux skills, but the CLI somewhat scared me off ... no, more felt like a waste-of-time. I don't want to have to do ONE BILLION THINGS (half-of-which I don't know which to do -- as a new user who doesn't know what to install or whatever). I just want to click on a program, download it, and it runs. Yeah, of course, I can come up-to-speed on that stuff, over time. But the Software Library GUI is best way on Linux for me to install stuff.

This is basically why every time I want to try linux again, I don't. 30 years of linux and no one thought to try to make it easier for normal people to use. And you wonder why Windows is still popular.

Glad to find someone like you who shares this thought. I want to rant about this abomination "linux" so bad, but its really of no use. I wouldn't be using this BS if wasn't forced to do so by work. So MANY simple and intuitive tasks on other superior OS (windows/mac) are so bizzare here that I have to search for "how-to" on forums and videos constantly. And the worst is all the retard who keep glazing this shit everywhere and think they are superior for wasting life on tinkering with their precious terminal. Lord have mercy on my soul.

If software doesn't come on your package manager or isn't current enough in your package manager, if you run Ubuntu/derivatives _and are willing to trust downloading random stuff from the Internet,_ you can often find baby repositories called "PPAs" that are just for that one piece or handful of pieces of software. This lets you still get _most_ of the benefits of the package manager like the dependencies and the auto-updating

I recently converted my win 10 laptop to Linux mint - I was setting up.the Odin Project as backup to my MacBook - I needed to install VSCode and located are package on the software manager, I installed it and then got a flat pack warning, something seemed wrong, when I tried to run it from the command line it didn't work. so I uninstalled it, followed the Odin instructions which had me install it using the command line and that solved the problem. So it definitely makes a difference.

Not knowing about GUI package management is why I haven't jumped into Linux. The terminal is a problem solving tool you use if and only if all other options have failed. If you're having to use the terminal to do something things have gone terribly, horribly wrong. I always thought the Windows installers were the best. I was so wrong.

Is that on a fixed release distro? I would guess on Manjaro or other rolling release distro, you get the newest version. I actually don’t use thunderbird so I’m not sure... I ran across your channel this morning. I'm a long-time Windoze user, and enrolled in the Insider Program. I've played with Linux off and on over the years, so I have a beginner's knowledge. I also have some very experienced Linux users in my circle of friends. Here's my question, especially since you demoed Audacity. The latest Audacity for Mint is 3.3.3, but you can't install it from the package manager. I did have to go to the Audacity website and, 'lo and behold, it appears as an appimage. First, where do I put it? I had it in /bin, and then one of my Linux friends who has been using it for decades, said to put it in /opt. But, after watching your video on file system, I'm thinking perhaps it should be in /usr. Second question: I blundered into actually getting the icon(?) on the desktop, but I'd really like to get it on the panel, or in the Start Menu. There seems to be no drag-n-drop way of doing it, and it's just not intuitive. How do I do this? Thank you for excellently-produced and easy to understand videos.

If you install some packages via Synaptic's package manager, and later choose to use some other package manager ("apt" or some other GUI), will you cause a conflict? Will, for example, "apt" know about what you had already installed via Synaptic? Will "apt" be able to properly uninstall a package that was installed via Synaptic (or vice versa)? Or will you have to keep track of which packages were installed with which package manager, in cause you ever decided to remove a package? Thank you.
@Doriandotslash
@Doriandotslash 3 жыл бұрын
It will not cause conflict. A distro that uses apt (apt-get) can use multiple GUIs. They all use the same database. You can use Software Center to do things, then Synaptic, then apt in the terminal. It's all tracked in the same place. I sometimes use the GUI and sometimes the terminal, it doesn't matter. This by the way, also translates to other distros that use other package managers as well (pacman, dnf, etc...).

I was going through your video and noted that you said Octopi was the package manager for KDE (Plasma). That is incorrect. Octopi is a GUI package manager for AUR which are the community repos for Arch and Arch based distros like Manjaro. It's a bit confusing as Manjaro labels Octopi (as well as Pamac, Manjaro's AUR GUI manager for Gnome and other GTK based DEs) as "Add/Remove Software" For the official repos for any distro, Plasma uses Discover. For Ubuntu based repos which use the PPA based community repos, Discover can install/uninstall software from those as well. Plasma labels Discover as simply "Software"
@Doriandotslash
@Doriandotslash 3 жыл бұрын
Octopi is also the PM for Void linux as well. I've used Discover many times on Plasma distros, but I usually resort to using the terminal in any DE. If I DO end up using a GUI, I'll often install Gnome-Software even if it's not on Gnome :)

@Doriandotslash

Many distros have great support for printers and will automatically install the drivers. If you run into a specific printer that the distro won't install drivers for, then you can usually find instructions on the distro's WiKi or handbook by doing a web search. Some printers have a Linux driver available on the manufacturer's website with instructions on how to install it. This isn't only a Linux issue. I've had to manually download and install drivers on Windows 10 for some printers as well. I feel this is really an issue with the printer manufacturers. They should focus on making universal printing instead of needing different drivers for every brand and model.

That is of course a situation where you would need to do a manual installation because there is no other option. Their website has instructions on how to run the install by using their installation script.

The problem is that sometimes the software store has old software. For example, Kubuntu had old VirtualBox, old Eclipse that didn't even work, old LibreOffice, old SearchMonkey. The exact moment that a new version is made, is not the exact moment that you get an update. I'm not sure why apt, snap, zypper, flatpack, dpkg exist. All these things are package managers?
@Doriandotslash
@Doriandotslash 3 жыл бұрын
This is all to do with the type of distro you choose. Fixed releases tend to have slightly older packages in order to maximize stability, and are updated less often to ensure you get a bug-free experience. For the most-part, this doesn't matter unless you specifically need a newer version because of a specific feature. A rolling release distro will have the newest package versions, but at the cost of introducing possible bugs (which is rare), and you will also get pinged with updates more often. apt, zypper, pacman etc are all package managers that different distros use. It's just a tool they choose. But snap and flatpak are slightly different because they use applications that are designed to be independent of which distro you're using, and also run inside a sandbox which will not be able to affect your system if something goes wrong. You can use flatpak for example on any distro, and will always get the same version of software across all distros. Flatpaks are also usually one of the newest versions available. This is what I typically do nowadays; I use Debian for maximum stability, and then if I want a newer version of a package, I'll use flatpak to install that.

@@Doriandotslash So, why is there a need for so many package managers? Just recently, I installed Folding At Home. There were 3 DEB files to install and one of them failed since it says failed to meet dependency. Why doesn't it tell me what that dependency is? Their website says that Ubuntu is supported. I have Kubuntu 18.04. The other question I had, that I asked at linuxquestions, is that I can double click on a DEB file to install it. Now, how to uninstall it? Someone said, the Muon Package Manager. So open Muon and find fah and click on uninstall, and it gives an error msg. The user experience on Linux seems rocky. Ok, fine. Let's say the fault lies with the boys over at FAH,

That’s not really how it works in Linux. Most applications install files in various locations on the disk. You could install your system on an LVM partition, and with that you can use multiple disks to create one large partition across all of them. I made a video on LVM.

You could check if there’s maybe a PPA repo you could add to your distro so you can use your package manager. Or maybe they have a Flatpak or Snap version. If none of those are options then yes, you’d have to either install from source code, or do what you’ve done and convert to deb files to install.

Well here's the thing. You CAN install it by downloading files from a website, but this is a less secure way of doing things. When you use the package manager, you know it's coming from a trusted source. Also, if you just download and install a file from the website, it won't get updated with system updates. When you use the package manager to install software, it will update that software for you when it's available. It's also important for major bug fixes and security patches because you'll get those very quickly though a package manager.

@Doriandotslash
@Doriandotslash 3 жыл бұрын
Most package managers will let you install older versions, but the commands to do that are different depending on what distro you're using, and it has to be done in the terminal. So if you're using an Ubuntu or Debian-based distro, one way is to run "sudo apt-get install emacs=1.1" And replace 1.1 with whatever version you're looking for.

@@faharoon357 Ah, that would require running your own repository, which is a bit of work, but doable. I did it myself several years ago. Hi Dorian, I unfortunately am not versed in Linux but am using it as I don't want to use Windows or mac. As I'm new to it all I tried to install software directly from a website. I can't remember exactly what I did when the open box came up but it asked to open a tar.gz file which I did, but then I realized I was beyond my depth so came out of it all but now am concerned that I have this file on my system and want to delete it but I can't find it anywhere in order to delete it using all the basic ways to find files. You've mentioned in this video that the files are installed all over the system so.. can you help at all?
@Doriandotslash
@Doriandotslash 4 жыл бұрын
If you downloaded it with the web browser then it might be in your downloads folder. If it’s not there then it put it in the temp folder. So if you see it in your downloads folder, just delete it. If it’s not there then don’t worry about it because the temp folder gets cleaned out.

Home made software is a little more difficult because you need to know what the requirements are for the program and install those first. This is why a program like PlayOnLinux (which installs programs for wine) use a database of dependencies to ensure those are set up first.

@@Doriandotslash I see, I thought I didn’t configure wine correctly, but you are right I tried downloading notepad++.exe through wine and it did it perfectly The thing is I recently got a program from a forum it’s a tool for a game to make things easier, now I would never just download it on my pc so I opened my virtual machine (kali Linux) and found out it’s a .exe file, So I went over and made a new virtual machine (windows 10 pro) and I downloaded the tool and it worked as I hoped it would, but there is always a bit... when downloading windows 10 on a vm you need good ram/cores and stuff to make it smooth, so if it lags just a little bit then it’s not “playable” Apparently there is a virus inside some of the dll files called Trojan virus But that wouldn’t affect me in a virtual machine To be honest I really want to make my own program/tool/mod but don’t know where to do so, I know several programming languages (basics)
