How to Install Wainscoting for a DIY Board and Batten look. I installed this wall treatment in my small laundry room to freshen up the look. This is a pretty easy DIY project that can be done very cheaply with just some MDF, paint, caulk, and spackle. This is the first of several laundry room remodel projects I’ll be taking on this year.

This was painful to watch. You don’t use mdf for baseboard. Is to porus it swells when wet. You’ll sell as soon as you take a mop to that floor. Second.. stop spackeling edges on mdf. Use bullseye shellac base primer . Scuff smooth when dry . Done . Third . Pocket screw your stiles and rails in one assembly. It will ensure perfect joints that won’t separate. And lastly you should always lay out wanescott with a vertical stile at the ends of each wall . It’s traditionally how it’s done .looks funny otherwise. Also latex primer on mdf is a no no . The water raises the fiber and leaves you with a lumpy finish . A cabinetmaker

Good video. I am a 3rd generation carpenter and have done many different styles and lay-outs for wanescoting. I just wanted to give a few tips. 1 - just use 1x4 or 1x5 (actual sizes in canada are 11/16" x 3.5"/4.5") material over sheet goods (it costs less and comes pre-primed and you don't have to rip anything and that joint at 8 ft. won't occur because they come 16ft. long) 2 - The best way to do this style is to buy a 4' x 16' x 3/4" sheet and cut-out the squares so there are no joints to crack over time. this style will eventually crack so filling the vertical will only work for a few years unless you join them (ie. biscuits or other way). You could use a 1/8 roundover bit on the cross-cut ends (like concrete curbs) to make it look like you planned for the eventual cracking that is almost guaranteed to occur.

This was a really useful video and guide which I used primarily to do my office. For a first time DIY I learned a lot. Planning - what you will need for paint, how much material you will need, laying out where the paneling will go, etc. Laying out the paneling was the toughest since there were many plugs i wanted to avoid. Playing around with spacing solved this. Issues I ran into were with the wainscoting panels - your house walls are not going to be perfectly flat! To over come this I sanded the panels down on the back side to help them lay flat against the wall, used liquid nails to help glue them to the wall and then filled the edges with Alex’s paintable caulk. Painting the bottom portion of the wall and the panels before was definitely helpful. Another time saving tool was a laser level. It helped show plumb lines on the wall and horizontal lines each time to double and triple check. I wish I could upload a picture to share but it doesn’t look possible on the phone.

Nice idea on ganging them up to seal the edges. I think I'd probably have cut all the verticals the same and installed them first and then pushed the top rail down to meet them, but I can see how that could be a problem if the floor is uneven, then your top rail would follow that unevenness and be wavy. The longer it is the worse that problem would be. I've also seen people cut the entire thing out of one sheet (removing the rectangle areas, essentially, so there are no seems at all) you can get 10 foot long MDF so this can work in a small room.

similar to your mdf cuts that you spackled, I had an issue with mdf v match board.... just kept sucking back the paint, especially because I was spraying it. I found out afterward from my friends dad (amazing custom carpenter that actually did a lot of the super fine carpentry for one of the original rim guys houses) that a 50/50 solution of wood glue and water rubbed into the edges also solves that.
