How to Instantly Draw an Isometric Cube - Adobe Illustrator Tutorial

Learn how to make an isometric cube by pressing only one button!
In this tutorial we take advantage of the illustrator action window and learn how to scale, shear, rotate, copy, and paste all by pressing only one button.
This is the best way to create a rhombus cube in illustrator!
You don't have to draw a cube in illustrator to make this possible, instead we work with the rules regarding isometric shapes to make a cube in illustrator.
Note, sometimes Illustrator CS5 likes to omit the scale command. I believe this is a bug with the program itself, but 90% of the time you'll get a perfect cube.

The below is what worked for me perfectly in CC 2019. The only change for me is the last step where the angle is 90 and the transform edge to be selected is top left. Select Square 1 Transform -> Scale -> Non Uniform H=100% V=86.6% Transform -> Shear -> H=30 Transform -> Rotate 30 Ctrl-C -> Ctrl+Shift+V Select Square 2 Transform -> Top Left Corner - Flip Horizontal Ctrl-C -> Ctrl+Shift+V Transform -> Top Left Corner -> Rotate 90 Stroke -> Round Join

super helpful tutorial! after some troubleshoooting in the comments here with the last recorded rotation being amended to 210 degrees I got it 99% perfect. only one little problem, when I play the action on a new square his hat flies off to the left lol. I can put that top plane back no problem, but it is very strange and pretty funny to watch.

I also have had this happen sometimes in CS5. Honestly, I am not sure what is going on or how to replicate it, as it seems entirely random. If anyone has ideas, please let us know!

thanks for this sharing. "86.302" :) when copy paste: ctrl c + ctrl-shift v. because you said that "ctrl c + ctrl-shift d" at 1:50

Wouldn’t it be nice if Illustrator could just do a vector like extrusion.. imagine how easier it would to create wireframes illustrations for interface in isometric view.

are your stroke joints round or square? because i get jagged edges if they are sharp and square when i transform and flip the square horizontally.

Yes you are correct. You need to have corners as "rounded join" and not "mitre join". Mitre join causes the jagged edges.

Its probably far too long since you made this to get a reply but where did you get that figure 86.302 from? To do this why not just make a hexagon shape then divide it into three?

It has been a long time ... I'm not entirely sure anymore. It's something to do with the sheared geometry of the cube. Some people have also used 86.60 .

In your list of actions in the Actions panel, delete the 'Transform Panel' actions that don't have the > to the left of them.

Where can I get your brush? "2pt oval"

The brush is part of the standard library of brushes shipped with Illustrator. You can select it by pressing b, to select the brush tool, then changing the stroke type on the top menu beside the line thickness and style box.

I have followed your video to a T at least 7 times and my cube does not look anything like yours. My squares are going different directions and not lining up where they should when I paste.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier, my KZfaq account stopped notifying me of comments. That's curious. I just tried it again and it worked out perfectly. Are you using CS5 or a later version? I haven't tried with newer Illustrators.

Illi Tutorials I had to put my final rotation at 90 degrees, instead of 60 degrees, to get the right fit (Illustrstor CC)

Your maths is incorrect. The shear angle is 86.6. If we use your measurement of 86.602 the planes do not line up.

Thank you for your comment. Illustrator rounds up, so when the shear angle is calculated it is as 86.6. But you're correct, you do not need to use 86.602. If you press control+y after creating the cube, you'll see that everything lines up.
