Been doing a lot of investigation into matten filters. This looks like a great alternative for a display tank. For anyone on the fence on Joeys book. It comes highly recommended. The amount of amazing knowledge in the book is invaluable. Thanks for the great content Joey 🙏

This is one of my favorite DIY filters you’ve shown yet. Simple but very effective. I’m thinking of setting up a 125gal and do 3 of these. A half round in the middle then one in each of the back corners. Stuffing a lot of bio media behind them.

Excellent tutorial! I have used this same set up - minus the plastic bucket - for my 125g aquarium. I did a standard Hamburg Mattenfilter and used Koralia pumps in opposing corners for flow, and added Matrix in bags behind the foam. It was a great space for hiding the heater too. I had a sensible bioload of fish and it worked beautifully, even for such a large tank. I have since moved and I'm getting ready to set the 125g up again, and I will incorporate acrylic instead of a bucket just because I need the added size. (I may even chose to cordon off part of the back of the tank and make baffles) Your comment of the plastic preventing fish from getting behind the area while rinsing the foam is worth it's weight in gold - just try herding fish in a tank that size! lol Thanks for the wonderful vid...

i see this as also being a top corner tank for those who don't want to take it the whole way to the bottom of the tank. It would require you to keep the bottom of the bucket on when cutting it up but i think it would look really nice and serve will for people with small tanks to manage

Hi Joey - many thanks for another interesting video :) Since seeing Rachel O'Leary's modified manifold hill stream videos with the poret foam corner matten filter I've been thinking about doing one of these myself. I think you could improve on this design by just cutting four large rectangular holes in the bucket leaving a cross shape of plastic as a brace and to support the powerhead's return nozzle. This would mean you'd get more even flow through a much larger volume of foam than if the water's just being sucked through holes, also making it much less likely to clog. I think you'd probably need slightly thicker foam for this to work well - probably 2" would work. The main reason I like this idea is that the beauty of matten filters is that the exposed sponge offers fry, inverts and smaller fish a large surface to graze on all kinds of microscopic critters, which wouldn't happen so much with the "lots of small holes" approach. The weakness of what I'm suggesting and a great strength of yours is that the holey plastic retains the division between tank and "sump" areas when the sponge is removed. However I think that's easily solved by taking another quarter of the bucket and leaving it smooth and complete - then just slide it down between the brace and the foam before the foam is removed for cleaning. Actually there'd be no real reason not to use something like 2 to 4mm acrylic in place of the cut up bucket, it might cost a bit more - but then you could buy whatever colour you liked and not have to bother to spray paint it. cheers :)

Awesome as always Joey, I'd guess you could go one step further and silicone two pieces of bucket about 2" apart (innermost first) put the sponge in between them and fill the inside with pot scrubbies, lava rock, bio balls, etc along with the pump for even more beneficial bacteria. This would help from possible recycling when cleaning the sponge.

Very informative video....I liked it so much that I will redo my hospital tank and put this filter in it for convenience and ease of maintenance . I have a 30 gallon long. I think that if I paint the back of the aquarium black and the filter black also it will pop ! and with the foam I could even keep fry in it etc. So many possibilities.....THANK YOU

Must say I enjoy your DIY and have done quit a few of them. I am setting up a 160 gallon tank (keeping Koi's) planning on putting 2 on each end of the tank your corner Super Charge corner sponge filter, but also wanted to add in the center your overflow project that will go to a sump and return via pump. Question, is the position of the overflow best in the center since I'm planning the sponge filters. thanks for your advice.

Hey Joey! Its great learning from your videos, but 1 thing that I'm buzzed about is how do you start the cycle from the tank to the sump? I would prefer an automatic way rather than sucking on 1 side of the pipe. Also explain the manual ways to do it while your at it. :) Cheers!

Silicon, are we doing the correct thing by using our finger to make a concave shape? Should we make a simple tool to create a triangle with no possibility of a lip forming allowing water into the seal? Experiment with this idea. Came from looking for sealing bathroom areas.

Question: could you put two of these on separate ends of the aquarium, using the pumps, have one act as the intake to an underneath trickle down sump and the other end as the output? Basically a mega filter.

Hi Joey and thanx for the video. Concerning flow rates, I am going to be requiring a 1200 L/hr pump however I need to shift the water up from my sump to my highest tank which is 6 foot in height. (My other tank is only 3 foot high) Do I need to consider this when buying a pump?. Thanx alot. PJ

To drop the price even more if you talk to the bakery section at most Walmarts, and probably other stores though I haven't tried, they will sell you the buckets they get in which contain items such as frosting. These buckets are usually sold for $1.
