@@ScannerDanner Awesome! I will certainly check it out!! I have a lot of work to do for a fleet of early Duramaxs and 6.5 diesels. I have always fancied myself an ok wrench turner and a novice level electronics enthusiast, but trying to accurately pinpoint issues in the CAN systems or anything with a PWM drivers has been beyond me for a while. I am looking at getting an oscilloscope, but between all the money I have to pour into my OWN truck, and all that I have spent so far, I don't think I am ready to swing several thousands again (check your u-joints....your entire driveline will thank you hahaha) What would be a good 2 channel scope (minimum?) to get my hands on in the $200 ~ $500 range? I was at first opposed to PC based scopes, but now looking at the software available, and having used my Flashscan for EFI tuning, I have really grown to like multichannel diagnostics, as well as having a larger screen to make sense of all that data at once 😅

Here is the short version. I was six months old when my father died, had an abusive step father from age 6 to 15. Hated everyone and everything, used drugs to find a happy place, took 15 more years to kick it, found a new "high" and that is through my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Somewhere in the middle of all of this I found my love for electricity and electronics. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 I am nothing on my own.

Stats show that children are 20-30 times more likely to experience abuse with a step parent in the house. Not 20%. 20 times. And I am really sorry to hear about that. And am glad that you overcame it and found joy in your life. It's funny; I would call myself an atheist primarily, but know a man who is in touch with god when I see one. First I would like to point out that there are teachers and then there are teachers. You are a teacher in the truest sense. Someone can know everything there is about a topic but not be able to convey it in such a way that you get it and want more of it. That is a true gift. Though I did drivability work at the dealership in the early GM computer days it was not with this kind of understanding. My primary specialty has always been automatic transmissions and few have looked at waveforms for diagnosis. I briefly touched on it about 15 years ago in a simple on/off solenoid (as opposed to a PWM controlled). It does occur to me that though on time is measured in millivolts, in reality it appears that it is less than that due to the pintle opening once it reaches sufficient magnetism to actually move the pintle. However, I see the closing on the voltage scale (something I did not know about at that previous time in my life) and it seems like the "On time" and the area where the pintle is open are very similar, though slightly shifted start to finish. Obviously strictly an engineering issue, similar to whatever motivated the designers to use a particular type of injector but a matter of curiosity just the same.

Excellent series. Using what I learned I found the defective wire in the harness between the injector and the ECM. By cutting the pulsing orange lead to injector #3 at the ECM and at the injector and splicing in a new segment of wire, I bypassed the break that was somewhere in the harness.

It's amazing how life is. I finally figured it out after 50 years I think, That were all here to help each other not help thyself, If your where you are suppose to be and doing what your suppose to be doing, the rest will FALL into place. And life will be a blessing in many many ways. I came here because i was stumped about an injector current waveform that i had never seen before and low and behold look what your talking about. Peak and hold and that's just exactly what my waveform looks like.

Great Video. I am playing with this on my Hantek Scope now to see what it looks like. I have also noticed that sometimes unplugging the alternator will get rid of some of the noise so I can see the pintle movement a little better. I want to do a video on testing injectors with Noid Lights/Test Light, Power Probe 4, and a scope and what you can tell from each and under what circumstances you want to use each. I'm playing and learning. Nothing better that seeing a bunch of good ones to make a bad one stand out when you see it.

I recently purchased a Pico 4425. I was just gathering injector wave forms on my 2007 Jeep GC WK with the 5.7L Hemi, and my 2011 Mustang GT 5.0. I got two different voltage patterns. I had seen the Jeep pattern previously but not the Mustang. I went looking for a reference and found this video. I printed out the wave forms and added the notes from this video. This was a huge help. Thanks. I also have been following your videos and I subscribe to your SD Premium. I was not aware of your personal story. Congratulations on finding your way. First of all: another great video ! You can also find a different design of peak n hold. Aplying full 12V for about 1-2ms and then changing control voltage to PWM mode to maintain injector open and limit current dynamically. Commonly used with low ohm gasoline and LPG injectors. Zener diode you said about is actually a transil or TVS diode.

You can perform this test on any port fuel injected system that uses a saturated switch injector (which most do). I am not sure if you would want to use this timer tool on a peak and hold injector. Fortunately I cannot remember when the last time I saw a peak and hold injector on a PFI system. As for using the current clamp on anything with less than one amp you will get some noise in the picture. You can try filtering it and also moving it away from any ignition components

In my design days at IBM we had several ways to reduce the pick time of an electromagnet. We used them on clutches, print hammer actuators etc. The simplest was to use a capacitor in series with the magnet coil and a resistor in parallel to the capacitor. When the switch closes, the current is only limited by the capacitor with is near zero resistance initially. When the capacitor gets charged the current flows only through the resistor which provides the hold current. When the switch opens, the capacitor is discharged by the parallel resistor. We also used flyback diodes, usually in parallel with the coil to quickly collapse the magnetic field. It would be interesting to see what is inside the PCM for pick and hold systems.

I can explain why the Honda injector has the series resistor and opens faster. Inductors (coils) resist changes in current. The larger the inductor--the longer it will take for the injector to saturate (coil to reach maximum magnetic field and open). Placing the resistor at the coil limits the maximum current cheaply. The low inductance allows the injector to open quicker. In a Peak and Hold, the inductance is also low and therefore opens faster. (continued)

Comment to fivefortyeye-To back up what Danner is saying,when he hooks up the scope he is showing you the waveform,but when he is showing the waveform,he is also talking about voltage,amp etc.lets take the waveform coming from a fuel pump,although you dont have a scope ,you can measure amp.and voltage with your meter and follow along his testing,buy the book and follow him through step by step,try it let him know how you make out.

@fivefortyeye540i Absolutely not. Of course there is heavy scope usage, but I offer an alternative DVOM test whenever possible. If you watch some of my videos you will see the limitations of a DVOM but I still show it. There is also scan data diagnostics too, so the scope is only part of it. I am sure some of the book owners would back me up on this. Maybe they could comment here?

SCANNERDANNER, can you post a youtube video showing on the oscilloscope what good and bad "spark plug" oscilloscope waveforms look like? How would you know if you spark plugs are good or bad by only looking at the injector waveforms or ignition coil waveforms on the oscilloscope? I have seen you videos of you showing the ignition coils waveforms and injector waveform but never the spark plug waveform any reasons why?
@cyborgdale
@cyborgdale 11 жыл бұрын
(continued) With the Peak and Hold, the current is allowed to spike higher initially for a short duration causing the coil to saturate faster and then quickly limited to a lower value. This current control is done at the computer. Looking at the total ohms is somewhat misleading as this is a coil (solenoid, inductor). When comparing injectors, it is better to think of total impedance (inductive reactance + resistance). You can also measure the inductance value.

I would assume that it's either losing a power or ground for the drop out and drop in, but what's weird is the amperage waveform does not drop out. Ok thanks. Found where I can edit. My original question was that why was my amperage waveform dropping out and in when I had the trigger right on the middle of the waveform, but I think what happen was I adjusted either my time base or voltage ,and the scope automatically changes the trigger from normal to auto or single, and that was causing the waveform to look like it was dropping out and in. Next day I tried it again and made sure I still had a normal trigger. So now I'm a little confused on why I'm getting only about 1 Amp on the feed wire for all the fuel injectors. At first I was thinking " ok this circuit is a parallel circuit, and should be getting around 4 or 5 amps being that it's a 5 cylinder, but then I said " this is a sequential fuel system so each fuel injector is a series circuit, and spray in sequential order, and that's why I'm only reading about 1 Amp on the feed wire to all injectors. So just wanted to ask if I'm correct on thinking that the fuel injection circuits are each a series circuit ?

Would it be dangerous to energizes a peak and hold injector with a fuel injector tester which pulses or just to energizes it with a constant power/ground?

I wouldn't recommend it. The peak section is like 1ms long? At best you are 100ms by hand

I know this video is old now but maybe someone will see it and my question... Since the voltage waveform shows the injector commanded on time (i.e. the commanded pulse width), shouldn't that time also match the DC current waveform from mechanical pintile opening dip to mechanical pintile closing dip on the voltage waveform?
@ScannerDanner

Pretty sure they are close (mechanical movement times)

@@ScannerDanner yeah I thought they should be too. I didn't mean specifically in this video, but I saw a video from someone else on a supposedly known good sample and the commanded on time via voltage waveform was like 25% longer than the actual mechanical on time from pintile open to pintile close on the waveform. This was an idle waveform as well.

@@bluegizmo1983 within this conversation is why it is so important that you use factory parts whenever possible because mechanical construction can be a factor

I am trying to find the video where you found a injector falling out and you were showing the difference between duty cycle and pusle width. I have not been able to find it.

+Frater Perdurabo I've done it a few times. You will find it in the Vantage Pro and Verus Series as well as in one of the last lectures in section 3. Hope that helps. Thanks!

how does it look an open fuel injector waveform?? does it have a hump?? whats the measurements?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 жыл бұрын
an open will be no waveform at all and depending on where the open is you will have a flatline 0v or 12v signal
