Our oldest cat absolutely loves kittens. It's so easy to introduce a new cat, he does all the work for us and it's so sweet to watch. He lays on the floor to look the smallest possible, keeps an open body language (ears facing foward, relaxed body, slow movements), pretends to look away or be occupied cleaning himself so the new kitten can build up the courage to come see closer while he's "not looking". Within the day he already has adopted them.

It's easier when the new cat is a kitten. The older cat doesn't view it as quite a threat so things don't get too violent. Also, despite being very territorial, cats love stimuli, so a new cat gives the older cat someone to play with.

Sometimes it works, sometimes not.. Got my cat(female) a friend, coz her old one got sick and died.. she really loved him, but the new cat she hated just like the cats in the video, I did like him, I watched them and they got along, got along means as long as the new cat didn't bother her it was fine, otherwise she slaped her and she left her alone. they sleept 1 or 2 times close together.. she was a really cranky old thing.. hehe.

I once had two cats that I got as kittens. Even though they were siblings, they never liked each other. One wanted to play and one wanted to be left alone. They did cuddle and sleep together at night, but whenever he tried to play she would hiss at him and hide. I was so sad for them both. I thought if I raised siblings together from kittens they would automatically be best friends. But I had never owned any cats before and maybe I needed to intervene more. He died at 8 from a UTI (I hate vets) and since she seemed to hate playing I kept her as an only cat until she passed at 16.

In 1999, when I took a stray female cat from the streets of my town, I simply left her together with my first, older, male cat. I left them together at home and went to visit my parents, as it was Easter and I had arranged that visit before. I was out for about 2-3 hrs. I didn't know what I would find back home after my return, and I expected a pandemonium of screaming, fighting cats, but to my great relief when I returned home, I found two cats peacefully sleeping on the sofa. Before they died in 2012 (the male in August, the female in October), they had shared life with me and each other for more then 13 years. I was exceptionally lucky, I suppose.

Il mio Ettore ha vissuto quasi 20 anni e per me è stato un compagno di vita e mi manca tantissimo, credo sia volato in cielo, che sia tra gli angeli, tra gli dei , tra gli illuminati, quando lo penso mi si riempiono gli occhi di lacrime perché ricordo quanto ci amavamo, lui dormiva per ore sulle mie ginocchia e io stavo ferma immobile per non disturbare il suo sonno profondo e guardarlo sognare pregandolo di non lasciarmi mai. Invece quel momento è arrivato ,il mio dolore è stato così forte da non riuscire a respirare, così forte che il petto mi scoppiava, così forte come mai nella mia vita ho sentito. Perché queste care creature ci abbandonano così presto, ? I suoi compagni gatti che vivono ancora nella mia casa da allora non vanno più tutti d'accordo, forse ancora non sono riusciti a designare un nuovo capo, spesso litigano e sono in competizione. Li amo tutti ma nessuno ha preso il posto del mio Ettore nel mio ❤️💓

There is another trick you can use to help. Start the cats in different areas with a glass door in between so they can see each other but are protected in their own space. Give them toys to play with and their own bowls, etc. After a few days, swap the toys over so the new and old cat have the other cat's toys. They won't like them at first but then will associate the smell of the new cat as they begin to play with them. Then they are much more likely to be prepared to meet.

I'm often asked how to introduce cats to each other, and my best advice is here in this video. Some cats take longer, some don't take long at all. Some may need to stay between a partially closed door or gate during feedings to get used to each other. I was very lucky with Shorty because she's not territorially insecure, meaning, she didn't mind sharing the cat tree with Kodi. If she did mind, and Kodi insisted on claiming the cat tree, I might've had to get another tree or climbing surface that he could have. Cats need territory, food, love, stimulation, at least 1 litterbox each, and a fairly calm household where they can be themselves. Actually I am curious about something. 1 of my cats is naturally a bit skiddish (thats fine,to each cat their own). But she's been peeing where she oughtn't too. And has no reason to(litter is fine,isn't brooding/scared,isn't a territory area,literally just went in the litterbox,etc)--well,that I can think of,anyway. I assume she's got a nervousness issue or something?!? I've been aware of it ever since her birth,but I still don't know how/what to do about it... (she's going on 2 yrs old now =__="")

In order: No, No,No, We have 3 different boxes all in same place, Only for a couple months-her mother(ended over a year ago), My room/bed. Does that help?? (W/ her mother thing: we only have girls and it was an alpha struggle. But the habit started before she was of age for heat..).

How long does it takes for them to show signs of acceptance of each other since the 1st step? I've just rescued a 2nd cat and my 1st cat that I've rescued a year ago doesn't accept her well even after more than a week, tried step 2 and it went bad so back to step 1.

i let my new kitten out to explore the house yesterday and surprisingly my cat didn't freak out. he growled a little, but actually let the kitten explore. he just followed her around. i think it helps if your play with the big cat first and wear him out. then let out the new cat.

One tip I'd like to give after watching cat videos for a while is that introducing them with a baby gate in between them and then having their food on the opposite side of a door/babygate is also helpful from what I've seen.

I introduced a two year old to a six year old cat, both female (something I'm told is quite impossible to have together 'cause of competition between them). The six year old was a dominant boss who'd fallen into a depression after my older cat (eight years upon death) passed away six months prior. This is what I did: 1. I went to an animal shelter and made sure the new cat was an adult, because from prior experience I knew my cat hated kittens. This added to the challenge of introducing them, but for my cat personally it was better. 2. I also made sure that the new cat had a submissive personality and had no desire to rule or challenge leadership. My older was dominant, not submissive. 3. I let them handle things on their own. I knew this would take a long time. Now let me be frank, my older cat NEVER turned aggressive. She hissed and showed her dominance, but she never turned aggressive. If she had I'd of taken the new cat back. At first she couldn't see the new cat without hissing. Two weeks in, I moved out. This meant that my older cat didn't have her special places she felt she needed to protect and this was a big stepping stone that brought them closer. To this day, the older cat still shows signs of dominance to remind the other who is in charge, and the younger never challenges and shows signs of submission. But the younger (despite history of severe abuse on behalf of two different former homes) is comfortable enough to tease and annoy my older cat, who is very easily annoyed. They don't sleep together or snuggle up, but they play and my older cat is no longer depressed. : ) So basically I made sure the personalities matched and then let them handle it themselves, but I watched over them constantly to make sure there wasn't any fighting. This is one long comment. xP

Don't worry keep your hopes up. My friend had his cat go missing for almost two weeks and he was freaking out. It turned out the cat was under his neighbor's deck and could not get out. So try asking your neighbors to check their garages, porches, etc

It could be that, it is much easier to introduce an adult cat to a kitten. But, it also could be that they just didnt like each other that much. Cats have their own personalities and, just like with people, they just dont get along with every one. ;)

yes they have their own 'personality traits', I agree. Watching the cats interact is so interesting. Recently I read a book about cats behaviour from a so-called "cat whisperer", it helped me understand some situations between my cats better. (If someone is interested in this: Pam Johnson-Bennet: "Cat Vs. Cat: Keeping Peace When You Have More Than One Cat " - I have no affiliation with the author whatsoever)

My ex had two cats; a black Ragdoll cross, and a ginger and white Tabby. The ragdoll was a year old when she got her ginger and white as an 8 week old kitten. They were both males, but strange for a male cat, the elder cat mothered his younger brother. Carried him upstairs, groomed him, and let him sleep on him. As for the latter, he never grew out of it, so a well-aimed kick shoved him off his older brother and off the bed. They never hurt each other, but it was very entertaining to watch

2 weeks ago we rescued a kitten that was very sick. We let it heal in a separate room and after about two weeks we introduced the kitten to our other two cats. We knew that one of them was going to have a harder time accepting the kitten because he was more territorial and more grumpy. But my other cat was already playing with the kitten after about an hour, My grumpy cat was blowing and staring directly at the kitten. I can only hope that he'll accept the little one like my other cat does. Thanks for making this video!

chewface Have you actually owned a dog? Poop eating is not normal behavior, and they have territorial / trust issues as well. Look at Cesar Milan's shows and you can see all the ways people have consistently misunderstood the nature of dogs, thinking of them as simplistic, one-dimensional happy-go-lucky animals, only for it to end up biting them in the leg.

More like how not to introduce two cats to each other. The last shot of the video literally showed both of the cats laying dead on top of each other. This was the result of allowing the black male cat interact with the female cat. Do you not understand that animals of the opposite sex were not made to interact in non sexual ways? This is very appreciated and helpful as I plan to take in a kitten at 6-8 weeks whom I've known since 10 days. I have two cats that just barely tolerate each other, but I have a feeling this little one will be the catalyst for a bond among all three. Thanks for your helpful and entertaining advice.
