A good first introduction is one of the best ways to show a new character to your audience. When your readers see your character for the very first time, they will be getting their initial impressions of them, and gaining knowledge from their design, personality, and even their mannerisms in the moment. Today, I want to give you 10 tips and techniques that you can apply to your own stories when you are introducing new characters within them. With these techniques, you can make sure your character introductions are always interesting and entertaining, making your character valuable from their very first moments within your book! 😊

I am currently writing my own novels, and the first things my main characters always do is waking up in the morning. We all sleep and we all need to wake up in the morning, and it is through this universal experience that I want to introduce them. Along side walking them up, I introduce the setting, starting with universal stuff like the morning sky. I don't introduce them talking until they are reacting to the world around them. Now, because I mostly right historical and fantasy, I have to do a lot of exposition in the beginning, as smoothly as possible. In my story "Les bourreaux contre la maladresse, l'amour s'écrit avec le sang", the main character is executioner Charles-Henri Sanson as a teenage boy, going to boarding school under a fake identity. He struggles to fit in and gets bullied a lot, as he struggles to understand the social norms, yet is at the same time very sly. He has a family which is abusive by modern standards but are also pretty supportive, at least his father is. He's introduced as a studious, sneaky and submissive youth, to an almost abnormal level. I have started working on it's prequel without finishing it, called "Les bourreaux contre la maladresse, un peu de cendre, un peu de miel." where the main character is Charles-Jean-Baptiste Sanson, a very young executioner. He is introduced as someone very guarded, for both himself and his loved ones, as he is surrounded by many rivals, most of which are older and stronger. He has a higher social status then them and his mother's support and string pulling skills, but he's still very vulnerable and he knows it. Both father and son are quiet pious.

Good to see making more content :) IRL stuff has kept me from writing the light novel I’ve been working on, but I’m hoping to have Chapter 2 done by the end of the month. If anyone would like to volunteer to illustrate that would be great.

My big problem stems specifically from describing new characters. I tend to think visually, so I end up going into to much detail on the appearance of characters when writing. I could take half a page just describing what a person's wearing. The funny thing is, my art is the exact opposite. I have a very minimalist style. Right now, I'm trying to find a happy medium.

How can i write a story that feels more grounded in reality while still feeling like a fantasy? I'm talking about stuff like ATLA, yes there are mythical creatures, magic, etc but in a way it still feels grounded in Chinese history

I think making it feel grounded is all about the characters. Even if the focus of the story is very mythical, when you add characters that feel relateable, I think it helps the story connect with the audience. 😊

I think it really depends on the name itself! As long as the names of the characters all sound normal for your story, then I think it would be fine to use it (even if the origins of the names themselves are different.) 😊
