I once had a baby rat get killed during introductions. It was my fault, I was moving things along to quickly. So, yeah. Learn from my tragic mistake: don't rush things, and don't skip steps!

hum....your rats all look amazing. And this video has been a big help in how I follow through on introducing. My girls aren't doing any of this, and I am confused if it is going well or not. They are just.... well ignoring each other is the best way to put it. They sleep in different hammocks, and don't stand near each other. They don't really even notice each other, no sniffing, no looking, no standing, no nothing.

So cute seeing all their little faces poking out of the hammock!

Just last night I introduced my three new girls to my older group (they're all around the same age)! All that happened was the alpha from the old group was going hump crazy and the new girls were having none of it, but there weren't any bad fights and I ended up leaving them all in the cage over night and everyone is cuddling. I'm relieved because this was my first introduction and it went smoothly.

Really glad I saw this. I had no idea you had to keep them separate for a while when adopting new ones. I just started adopting rats yesterday. We adopted two & then went & got another one today but they had already been together at Petsmart. Glad I know this now. 😀

Hello and thank you for these instructional videos. I have my baby rat beans for about 6 months or so. I had no idea that they needed a buddy. Im so nervous/ hesitant about getting another buddy for him.... so scared they would end up fighting and hurting eachother. Im so unsure what to do. Scared I guess, but I dont want him lonely when I am at work. I just love him and he is such a joy in my life. Very intelligent and so loveable ♡

He is so cute!!!!! I hope he gets better soon :) I'm sure he will. When I had my pet mouse before he got mites and it went away pretty quick. I'm sure he will be better soon. And he is just still so cute!!!!

Awesome video! I find that a lot of bonding with small animals seems to involve the same steps! That must have been so hard witnessing such a difficult experience with Iona and the baby. :/ Once upon a time I tried to create a trio with Honey, Rocky and Willow and Willow went right for Honey's throat. A rabbit screaming is a terrifying sound so I know how scary it can be when they don't get along! Uno seems like such a handsome and fluffy boy! I'm glad that he's settling in well with the other ratties! :) How do you come up with their names? They are all so unique! x

thanks for the tip this will help when I need to introduce a new pair to and old survive. how much do I need to worry about night time squeaking when introducing new rats? Near as I can tell they aren't hurting each other.

I had two boys at first and then decided to expand. I brought home a younger rat who was by himself in a pet store (I felt sorry for him being in such a loud and uncomfortable space with no interaction) I went through the introduction process with all 3 boys... It just didn't work. My older rats would constantly harass him and broke skin more than once. I decided to keep the younger rat by himself as I don't think he really copes with other rats around. He seems more happy in his own section of the critter nation. He plays, boggles and gets all cuddly by himself and then hides behind litter trays and igloos when he's in the presence of other rats.

Great video I know introducing is extremely difficult... Although I did have one rat that took a baby in and she loved it like it was her own child , licked all over ..her introduction was 2 minutes she was the sweetest Rat ever ..I usually put unscented towel on the bottom of the tub and I actually sit in the tub .. with unknown smell clothing...with them , in case if there is any fights ,... the last thing I want is a dead rat...😪 i’ve been very fortunate and raised Rats for over 30 years but I do watch them individually... and the big scream out NO!! Helps... Lol .. My friends and I do enjoy watching your videos.. you’re awesome

When I bought Dapper I knew I wanted to get a second rattie for him to play with, and about 2 months after I got him, I introduced him slowly to a new rat, but Dapper ended up killing the second rat.

What kind of camera do you use to film your videos?

I understand that it is important to do what works best for your rats, but putting the cages next to each other can make them aggressive, because they can see the rats but not work out there differences, this can cause problems later, and I would reccommend the carrier method, because it is proven to reduce injury and such

hi there. i have two adult girls that are a year old. ive recently got three new babies that were approx 8 weeks old although a seperate breeder believed they were a little younger. ive kept them in seperate cages going on 3 weeks now. their cages are side by side now and ive given them a smelly blanket from eachothers cage which the babies were really interested in and the big girls had a wee sniff too. ive bought a savic royal 95 which is all ready for them all to move in. one of the babies has an old fracture in her front leg from when she was 2 weeks old. when i got her i brought her straight to the vet and was told her leg will always be deformed most likely and gave me some antibiotics for her which has been finished. she is smaller than the other two which i think is why im worried about intros. there hasnt seemed to have been any aggression between any of them so far but how would you recommend i do their intros? my adult girls do not like to be lifted so carrying them across the house to the bathroom to use the bath isnt really an option =( i can get them into the new cage much easier. would it be silly to do first intros there? thanks so much

if the rat is coming from a rat rescue shelter, would it still need to be quarantined or can i go into the cage next to cage step immediately

Besides the quarantine rule, do you always have to slowly introduce rats even if they are very young? At what age should you carefully do all of the excess careful introductions? I am very new to owning rats and I want to be as knowledgeable as possible as I may be buying a pair of blue girls soon.

hey guys, i was wondering if you can give me an advice So, two weeks ago I adopted a baby male rat named David with 2 and a half months from a breeder and it was the last one from that critter so I had to bring him home alone (he is also my first rat). Today I adopted another one named Nico and he is David's half brother, they are from the same father and he is only 4 months, so I thought that the introduction was going to be easy. I put them in a neutral area and they did well, also i went with them to the breeder in a travel carrier and they were sleeping together and everything, but when I put Nico in David's cage, David freaked out and stayed in one corner without moving, eating or drinking and everytime Nico approached him he would squeak. I put them back in a neutral area but again, in the cage David doesn't deal with the situation very well. Any suggestions?

I just got a new rat cos my other rat went into a depression when her cage mate died she gained alot of weight and stop playing all she wanted to do was lay in my lap so she deff needed a new friend. It took me a week to get them to play and not fight but now you cant get them a part lol its great.

I got 4-5 weeks old brothers and they always kept fighting, bloody. I had to separate them. They live separated and alone for almost 2 years now. I wonder what I did wrong, that they never got along.

If I get them on the same day and plan on putting them in the same cage, would it be ok to put all four in the cage right away (since neither one of the rats had a chance to mark his territory on the cage yet) or would I use the bathtub method first? Hello, I just had my male rat (jacks) cage mate died due to cancer. I got two more younger male rats to keep him company. I have done the quarenteen and the cage switching. I have recently started introducing them and I am not sure how to exactly go about it. Jack is a dominat male. He was that way with his cage mate as well. When I put them into the new area that they have never been in and Jack starts to box with the younger ones. He also does this thing where he backs up to them and makes them smell him. Can you give me any tips and how to introduce them? I am having a hard time with introducing them its been almost a month and a half with all of the cage switchng and scent smell transfering.

Great informative video! I have two girls right now, both a year old. They have a good cage that would be suitable for 4 rats but I have a double unit Critter Nation in the mail (which is so exciting). Anyways today I discovered my local small pet shop, which should be considered a breeder because they have very sweet, beautiful breeding rats that are out in nice cages that you can interact with, has a new litter! They aren't up for adoption until Monday, but I might be getting two of them. I realized this situation is perfect due to my new cage will be new to both my current rats and them. My two females are not very aggressive or dominant to each other and they aren't even litter mates (I can't even really tell which one is dominant). I did the wrong thing introducing them luckily they were close in age and were perfect. Anyways I'm still scared my girls might play way to rough because they love to wrestle. Sorry this is so long but does anyone think this will be too difficult due to age difference?

My boy Jackson is aggressive toward other rats. He got along with my old rat fine (who passed away not long ago). They did fight sometimes. I recently got a new male rat who is younger than Jackson. I have them in a critter nation with one rat on the bottom and one on top. I have also been switching their blankets so they can get used to each other's scent. My male rat Trooper I think he gets to excited. I wanted him to socialize with the girls but when he approaches the girls they squeaked and either push him away or run away.. I'm not sure what that means. Help?

I have one little girl at the moment as her sister passed away after surgery yesterday. We're completely devastated over losing her. However, I've noticed a huge difference in her sisters behaviour since she's been alone (and it's only been 24 hours) She's extremely sleepy etc and is usually up and about all the time.
