Sorry, mate, don't take this the wrong way, but if it took you years to save £1000 then you might not be the best person to give advice on investments. Lol!
@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sadik, Thank you. Since you've asked a valid question respectfully, it deserves a response 😀. WHY SO LONG TO SAVE £1,000 In 1998 (aged 14), I immigrated to the UK as a First Generation immigrant. Without boring you with details of hardship, the focus then was survival. Saving as a concept didn't exist for me. We needed food on the table first. However, with a ton of grafting, I eventually started saving money. This is why that first £1,000 took years. Saying that, it then took less than 1year to save our first £10,000 and about 3 years save our first £100,000 because we'd started putting money to work. SHOULD YOU LISTEN TO ME? Well I'll let you be the judge based on the below. Today we are Financially Independent. This means our Net Worth gives us at least 25 years worth of expenses. This took considerable skill to achieve and we achieved it in 10 years aged 34. I'm now 36. We are also Mortgage Free having paid off ours in 7 years. When I don't create content on this channel, I wear many hats. 1) I'm a Chief Financial Officer for an investment business in London. We're currently raising and will be investing £100million. Look me up on Google, LinkedIn etc. 2) I'm a Chartered Accountant and I hold an MBA from The University of Cambridge. 3) I've worked in the Investment Business for the last 13 years. Should you listen to me about how to invest £1000? Well, as I said before it's up to you. I created this channel to teach. Investing £1,000 is not my current worry. But I create content on this because it is something many people who are still finding their way would like to learn about. I haven't created this channel to deal with people who have small minds and post silly and rude comments (you excluded). In my experience, those people get nowhere because their small minds keep them there. I wish you well, irrespective of whether you choose to listen to me or not. All the best 😀 More on me here from others who listen to what I have to say from the BBC, Channel 5, Metro, etc: thehumblepenny.com/media

@@TheHumblePenny That's impressive i agree and on that basis you have credibility. Furthermore I didn't say you were not worthy of being listened to. Everyone deserves an ear, it's whether or not people deserve the capacity to speak on a certain subject. Especially when it concerns people's finances. Well looks like you have earned your corner. I apologise for the misunderstanding and take back what I've said. but i will leave my post so other people who jump to the same conclusion can read what you've said.

According to Michael Burry the icon of the big short, he has predicted an index fund bubble and an eventual collapse. I would be very weary of index funds as there is no liquidity in them which means they are not safe
@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. I don't agree with you that there is no liquidity in index funds. It's too generic a point to make and my experience of investing in them says otherwise re liquidity. The nature of how index funds are invested also does not point to an eventual collapse unless you're saying that all the companies invested into via index funds will go bust? What do you currently invest in out of interest?

I'm new to the UK (2 years now) trying to find ways to save/make money. One advise that I've found to be consistently true is to spread the risk based on your age and general financial position. Stock trading is not all bad and I have made decent amounts before. But it could be incredibly risky for someone retired and not generating income through other means. It's about mixing and matching the right options based on risk. Thank you for the video.

@TheHumblePenny

Warren Buffett speaks a lot of wisdom but also has enough money to play a completely different game to you and me. He buys into companies typically below market value. As I'm exposed to investing in companies daily (in the other hat that I wear), I can certainly tell you that it's far from easy to make a good investment in an individual company. Only a very tiny percentage in the population understood how companies work let alone how to value them. So applying a quote from Warren Buffett (re individual company investment) to the masses is not the best thing to do. In my view, the only people who should be investing in individual companies are: 1) The Rich (like Warren) - Because they can afford to lose a lot of money; and/or 2) Those who understand company fundamentals and how to value them.

Thank you for this. Not that long ago i had just 0.35 in my account, and i am starting to move on slowly from that! Any income i get am saving 10% immediately and work towards 15% and recording on a xls exactly how i spend my money. I have a ord ac and a sav ac with the same bank, and i want a savings ac with a sep 'bank' so i build my savings up and get to my £1000 and start to invest. Thank you The Humble Penny :)

Hi Ken, I recently came across your content and I appreciate yours being relatable to the British clime; Could you speak to the point on over-paying on the mortgage? How does one manage the issue of the additional charges most may suffer from what a lender would consider a prepayment risk? Thank you.
@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Obasanjo Thanks! Overpayments are pretty normal. You can pay up to 10% Per year for most mortgages. So if your mortgage is £250k, then you can overpay by £25k! A large amount for most people. The lender charges are the least of most people's worries. Finding the 10% is the key thing. At the end of a fixed deal, there is no penalty. So large overpayments can be done in between deals too. Or simply finding a provider without Early Repayment Charges. Nationwide is one of them.

I loved the video, thank you! I just wanted to ask what apps or what exactly do you recommend to get started with Index Funds investments or even with investing into specific companies (although high-risk), particularly for the UK? There's so many and I'm not sure what would be best to get started...

Hey Sims, Thanks for watching! 😀 Index Funds are suitable if you're investing for a long term horizon with a focus on global exposure. This helps to remove issues of home bias (and worries about Brexit)
