@CorvusBard Good point. Also most modern jousting uses break-away lances so the chances of getting injured are very low.

Seeing his horse reinforces my belief that two of the horses at my riding school would make fine destriers. And I suspect one of them would also enjoy it very much.

Why aren't they riding with their right hand and lance nearest to the list (fence), and each other ? Isn't this the reason we ride on the left side of the road in Britain, Commonwealth, and other feudal countries like Japan?

Well I can say I'm a bit impressed. I haven't seen any form of heavy dressage for ages and now its like honey for eyes. Nowadays term 'heavy dressage' means nothing , nobody on tournaments do it , no knight knows what does it mean , even if they should. You are like honey for eyes....

I m Florian, I m 26 years old, im inlove with medieval times and animals, especially horses and dogs, i have a big collection of medieval collectibles backhome. i worked as an equestrian guide 6 years almost. going with the most 40 horses and tourists on the mountain, I can do horsestunts, i can shoot traditional bows very well, i can fight with medieval weapons, im helpfull in this kind of area and animals grooming, I m doing it good because its passion. As in Romania, where i m from, medieval jousting and reenactment its not so well known, i ll move to any country to do this, I m a man o principles and reliable as only a knight can be ! I m searching for job, or even volunteering if i have acommodation and food. in this area, medieval jousting, reenactment, horse grooming or trekking. i would live happy forever in a medieval museum village or settlement. I can send some photos if you want, and i ll answer to any question you want. I have been riding for 7 years now and am a very good rider, just turned 13 and I really want to joust when I grow up as a side hobby. I heard I need to be 18 or older to joust but I’m not even sure if this sport will exist by the time I’m 18 but my main question is where do I sign up and how would I attend and get the armor/horse I need to do so?

If you just turned 13 and that comment was posted a year ago then you will be 14 now. I am 14 and I'm currently a medieval Reenactor, I want to be a jouster too. I'm currently involved with a jousting group aswell, they have said that they will train me for the joust when I'm 16. You should reach out to jousters if you go to a show. Historical Jousting is incredibly expensive though; not only will you need a bespoke tailored full plate harness (which can cost £30,000 and a LOT more!!) But also a well bred horse, and all of the other equipment. Before you start jousting, try medieval reenactment. Because if you're too afraid to fight on the battlefield on foot, you are certainly too afraid to joust. Riding is one thing but jousting is another. I fight and train weekly but for jousting I will have to train daily. Get some experience in medieval combat on foot first, build up the authentic kit and then reach out to a jousting group.

i cant quite tell, if someone knows for sure could they tell me if they are using solids or break away tips? the lances look fairly thin at the ends as compared to the lances i am used to though those are using break away tips right now. If anyone could help educate me i would love the info as i have just begun squiring with a troupe of jousters i know and want to know as much as i can before my time as ground crew is over and i begin more training to be one of the knights and jousters. thank you

Courtesy of a video about a tournament at Arundel Castle, the bulk of the lance is solid ash, but the replaceable tip (~1m / 3ft) is made of balsa wood - no doubt serving the dual purpose of minimising injury to their opponent and providing a visual spectacle as it shatters.

Well, prettyish video, but it didn't really tell me much about jousting... Techniques, different ways to do it, what kind of what was used, did the lances splinter quite as easily as in the video or are we using softer woods nowadays? Was the aim just hitting certain body parts or was unhorsing the idea. Stunning horse, though :)

Corvus Corone it looked like theatrical jousting lances to me...my company uses real wood ones and they don’t splinter like that very often unless they’re doing theatrical.

Investiture as a Knight is mostly a thing of the past. The first Knights were simply men who could afford the equipment and training. Later Knighthood became a lower class of nobility. Today its simply a honorific given to celebrities mostly who definitely don't embody ideals of chivalry - they just embody wealth and fame above others.

Walter White - If he is playing a role appropriate for the time, rather than himself of 2015, he can call himself a knight as certainly as Sir Humphrey Appleby. This is common among reinactment groups. He may be "playing" a real historical individual who did have a jousting record. Or he could be a real baronet (What else do they have to do? Why NOT reinact?) and thus entitled to the honorific by hereditary right. Have a copy of DeBrett's on you?

There's a bit more to it than that. Sure, it's not the same as solid lance jousting, but it requires real jousting ability, skill and training. Just means you can replace the ends of the (already very expensive) lances, which makes it a bit more accessible. You still need very hard-core, carefully made armour. Please try not to be so cynical before you are educated.

***** Thanks for the advise and info. I'm leaving to the USAF soon and I will be earning my bachelor's in history antiquity. I really want to start authentic historic game and school, of course, learning and getting experience first hand in jousting. Like a club you know, but as a school to actually teach on how to become a knight. Big history enthusiast, and I'm willing to invest for this.

@@NobleNemesis there are actually different levels and approaches ie several different types of modern jousting. You're thinking of stunt jousting -- done by stunt riders at high speed, without real armour and with only very flimsy lances. Of course that requires plenty of skill too- it's just different.

This would be fun. But I would rather do it the way I saw in another video. Wearing maille instead of plate, and attempting to actually knock the oponent off their horse.

So you mean actual jousting? To do this, real strong Lances needs to be used and not these sticks that break instantly on contact of anything seen in the video, and then for safety reasons one must wear gambeson with mail ontop of that and with plate over it.

@@svartorivigt5016 Please note that Mr Sewell, who presents in this video, also is one of the few top international jousters who competes in solid-lance jousting. But believe me, the 'breakaway tip' jousting is quite difficult enough for most people.

Medieval English archers must have laughed and applauded to see their knightly superiors knocking each other off their horses with lances. But in actual war, the Archers know that the English knights will be fighting mostly on foot and beside them, while they help kill their French chivalric rivals with bodkin arrows and daggers.

Arrows don't actualy pierce medieval plate armor, no matter the weight and how pointy the arrow tip is aka bodkin etc. If you ever see armor being penetrated by an arrow, than its fake or they used weak material on purpose. You would realy need the thinnest and crapiest kind of steel plate to achieve that .... and even then "penetration" be *very* limited and the impact dampened by padding etc, preventing injury. .... and yes same applies to crossbows. Crossbows don't penetrate armor. Only Arbalests ( a more powerful and heavier version of crossbows ) can penetrate plate armor. But again, "penetration" doesn't mean it will go all the way through. Some ribs be broken, but the cloth - padding underneath will in most cases prevent death.

LKVideos - And of course, arrows can penetrate the openings and slits, just as lance splinters did, historically. Not often, but often enough. And, if the French are charging ahorse, the horses were more likely to be killed, and if the knights did not "void the saddle" (i.e., bail out) soon enough the falling horse could roll on or even over the rider.

Of course, just having finished Capewell's video "Deeds not Words" my first thought is WHERE IS YOUR VAMPLATE? Admittedly, not needed with balsa lances, but definitely with pine lances.

So, you Brits have this wonderful, rich history of knights on horseback and the Joust tournament...but you still managed to screw up motor vehicular transportation by electing to drive on the wrong (Left) side of the road. Note the direction/orientation of travel of the mounted knights, in relation to each other, and in relation to the Tilt (divider). The Medieval knights had it correct. 😛😊

british heritage is norman. all of this is norman. what little kingly sport isn't french, is either german or austrian. british royalty has been german for hundreds of years now
