Having the stack vent freeze up is a common problem in northern climates in the winter time. This happens when warm, moist air from your toilet and sink drains freezes before it is able to exhaust through the roof vent. Keep the terminations close to.the roof line. The more pipe in the cold it will freeze up. If the pipe is kept close to the warm attic. No freeze up. No taller than 1 to 2 inches. Take it from a Canadian in the prairies. Keep the size large 3 inch minimum or even 4 inches roof penetration.

I added an air admittance valve to my drain pipe to work only when my vent pipe freezes in 0 tempature, and works.

Where did you source the rigid pipe insulation from? Doesn't appear to be a normal item in hardware stores for anything that large of diameter

Black pipe n south facing with a copper “ t “ on the top I think would do it. Even if it closed up one good sunny day n ud hear that plug let loose n wonder wtf was that as it slid down !!

I noticed frost on the outside of my vent pipe inside of my attic. It was slowly melting and dripping down into my house. Would insulation tape solve this? Anything else I can do to fix this? Thanks!

what about sliding in a 'T' shaped sleeve pipe into the vent stack to prevent snow accumulation sitting on top and plugging up the vent stack... Even hard winds blowing across the vent stack opening can stop the release of gas. A T pipe would also eliminate this problem..perhaps the enlargment step can be done outside of the roof.

I think the moisture in the air exiting from the pipe is what freezes, more than snow sitting on top.

Who'd of thot vent stacks take so much thought and attention ? I have a rafter roof with 1 1/2" continuous vent. Tyvek on top of rafters. 2x2s spiked on top of the tyvek then roof sheathing, felt and metal roofing. . ??? Can I run the vent line up the slope of the roof inside a rafter bay then out the wall at the peak ?
