update: I did a little research and birds will avoid verticcal lines. I got vertical blinds and no more flying into the windows. But I still want people to have more compassion!! LOL All these negative comments about the poor birds! I am looking to prevent it, I"ve had them flying into my big front window since I got new windows. I don't want the BIRDS to be HURT! C'mon people, these are innocent animals with families, etc. Have some compassion! Bird "nuisance", hmm...we share the planet with them.

Thank you so much! I'm in Australia and we have a peewee attacking his reflection on all the windows. He lands on the windowsill to do it, so he doesn't hurt himself, but Mum's a little tired of being woken every morning by the taps on her bedroom window. I’ve looked into UV decals, but reviews are mixed. The bird strike film is ridiculously expensive here and mostly needs to be imported from the States with big postage rates. The scarcity of Aussie bird films is crazy, when you consider Aussie birds are famously aggressive. I was primarily concerned with peewee proofing Mum's bedroom window, but after taking your comments on board about the time and energy birds waste fighting a perceived threat we put there, I'll do the other windows he attacks, too.

I did some research, using para cord & stick on velcro , measure window width & length, cut the cords accordingly to measurements. Hang on the "outside" of the window from the top using the velcro. The slightest breeze will even make them move & looks pretty cool, but the vertical hanging strips spaced 4 inches apart keeps birds from hitting the window, I had to do something because the birds hit my picture window with such force, they were breaking their own necks. This one place sells them if your unable to make your own, just needs window measurements.

Very interesting. I sometimes have larger birds hitting my many sunroom windows. I've taped black paper cutouts of hawk shapes, which was effective. Taped long orange streamers across the windows, also effective. The yellow marker idea seems to be effective also. I'll pass it along to a friend who has swallows nesting in the overhang above her front windows. (She puts plastic wrap on her sills...)

Great! This is a good solution especially if the windows are hard to reach from the outside. The biggest thing is to remember to re-apply after a week or so because the fluorescence fades in sunlight.

I have had a cardinal attacking the window in my office for the past few weeks. I stumbled across this video. Cleaned the windows, let them dry and then ran the highlighter up/down and across at 2-4" spacing. Absolutely no difference whatsoever, the bird continues to bash itself into the window. Einstein said insanity is demonstrated by trying something over and over again and expecting different results. If that's the case, this bird is definitely insane, and since I am pretty sure I am not, I will not be putting highlighter marks on any other windows!

I too have a cardinal that repeatedly attacks her reflection in my picture window. Nothing I've tried on the inside of the glass stops the bird attack. I have put shaving cream on a paint roller and applied to the glass and that cuts down the reflection and stops the bird from attacking her reflection. But the shaving cream washes off with rain and has to be applied again. I'm looking for a more permanent solution. My window is very high on the house so it's difficult for me to reach it.

There was a Kamikaze Robin that kept crashing into my living room window over and over…. He’s got to have a big headache doing that. Bird websites say he is a male Robin attacking his own reflection in the glass. He thinks it's a competing male Robin for Spring nesting territory. It's a major noise distraction when I am on my computer. Walmart to the rescue! I hung two empty plastic Walmart bags outside above the window. They blow about in the wind. The stupid Robin can't stand them! So far he is gone! I will remove the bags after nesting season. :) Walmart bags are best!

Thank you!!!! I'm going to do this in conjunction with the uv bird decals. I live in the city and only on the third floor, but in two years about 5 birds have flown in to our windows. If they didn't die they were knocked out for 15 minutes until they could fly away. That's not including the other tenants. It breaks my heart to see birds on the ground outside. I'm going to pass this info on to the other tenants too. Very informative video!

two issues. one is bird strikes. perfect example are windows on each side of a corner. If from the outside a bird can see thru one window and out the other, it can cause a bird strike because birds don't understand windows. Need blinds on one window so from the outside a bird can't see a visible path. Can also be caused by windows parallel to each other on opposite sides of the house (front window, back patio sliding glass door). Make sure from the outside, there's no way to see thru two windows. Window tint can help for strikes, but not necessarily tapping (reflective tint definitely won't help). The second is bird tapping. The bird sees competition for nesting. This is mostly during nesting season, late winter to fall. If you can see your reflection in the window, so can the bird. The highlighter may not work, possibly if you use small swirly circle to break up the pattern. Patterned gift paper can be put up on windows of lesser used rooms, this breaks up the visual so it's hard for a bird to see its reflection. Gift paper instantly stopped bluebirds from attacking their reflection... .it was getting to the point I was worried the bluebirds would get exhausted or not have enough energy to lay eggs in the nest boxes. First time in 10 years they have done this. A more aesthetic permanent solution would to be install screens on the *entire* window, this will break up the visual so they can't see themselves. During winter you shouldn't be seeing any tapping, since it's not mating season, and some species of "bird flock together" as there is no longer any need for nest competition.

I have a male cardinal that has been here about a week and he is relentless. we live on the mountain and this place was vacant for couple years. Not sure if he has been here before. He looks young. Well, yes soon as the sun comes up he starts although he has toned it down a bit. I've tried it all. i will try making the grid but he already moves to other windows when I cover them and if there is a peep hole in the covering, he will come to it and peck. he also sings when i play guitar on the porch....that part is cool. :)

I saw on another video to use a white paint marker to draw VERTICAL lines every 4 inches on the OUTSIDE of your windows. Looks like it works really well. Don't worry, the paint marker scrapes off easily with a straight edge, like a credit card, but stays on for a long time so you don't have to keep reapplying it. I'm going to try it, because it's so sad when they hit the window. We have the decals on our windows now, and they definitely help, but sometimes they don't.

After watching this, I firmly believe you are a wonderful person! 👏👏 You happen to have any advice for how to keep urban birds such as pidgins, or the black Acridotheres tristis with those yellow beaks, from sitting on the window stills, making very loud chirps and imitation noises? (they sound like toy-futuristic-machine-guns I swear! Pew pew pew. It was hilarious until it became a nuisance) They also peck at the window glass, but the persistent noises are the worst thing about it. Not a nice way to wake up. I miss songbirds so badly 😅 P.S. The only obvious methods I see in stores around here seem like they would hurt the birds, and I'm not prepared to do that 😯

Green or dark colored paracord (1/8") spaced 4" apart, hanging loosely down works about 90%. Spaced 3.5" is almost 100% effective. Actually doesn't look bad at all. Mount it on wood strips, or holes drilled in plastic channel, and tack or velcro the strip with cords over each window.

I had SUCH high hopes for this, but within the hour our psychotic cardinal was back at it. He has been attacking our home for 2 years straight now - all seasons, all weather, sunup to sundown. We have tried everything suggested - the cutouts, CDs, streamers - they don't deter. We have put sticky on the windowsills and bird spikes - he hovers above them to attack. The only effective thing is covering a window. And if we cover a window, he moves to another. We covered every single window in the front of our home, his preferred location. He then started attacking the windows in the BACK of the house! I can't live in a house with every single window covered! He has started attacking our car windows as well. We have tried to find a nest around the house, but nothing. If you have any other suggestions, I would love to hear them. Right now, I spend most of my days away from my house, as I work from home and the constant banging drives me insane. I really miss my house and have come to absolutely despise this crazy bird!

Stacy Boatman That is frustrating. What works for one situation sometimes doesn't work for another. Full-length solar screens might be the only real solution. It isn't a cheap fix but with an uncommonly persistent bird, this might be the only thing that works. On the plus side, solar screens will also reduce cooling bills in the summertime and don’t block the view out the window from inside the house. Even if the bird continues his pursuit of the window, he won’t be able to do much knocking because of the distance between the screen and the window. We know of a case where the highlighter trick worked immediately with one persistent cardinal but once the homeowner cleaned off the highlighter marks, the bird came right back. Now the homeowner reapplies them every week or so during breeding season.

I don't feel "harassed". I feel I put up something dangerous for them and want to help fix that. I'm getting the vibe that there are two causes from the bird's point of view: your point about them seeing their own reflection as a rival, and my problem of them seeing a path that's blocked by glass. The 2nd problem is deadly. I solved it on a mountain house with huge upper fixed windows by putting up screens even though the glass doesn't open. Now I have a house with huge sliders and I need a different solution that's more practical. Still looking but will try the yellow marker as an interim approach.

The slightest breeze will even make them move & looks pretty cool, but the vertical hanging strips spaced 4 inches apart keeps birds from hitting the window, I had to do something because the birds hit my picture window with such force, they were breaking their own necks. I have tried putting tarps on a step ladder outside the window (thinking that they are attacking their reflection). That has worked and moved their attack to an unprotected window. So I will try the highlighter. Is there specific colors that work best (i.e. humans can’t see)? Thanks again and have a great fall (it is fall, right? Haha).

We have a spotted towhee that comes back every year in the spring. Every morning it pecks at window for hours long. I tried owl decoy that dont work, tried reflective tape dont work, tried cutouts dont work. Seems nothing works to get rid of them its very frustrating. Always same bird

Try using pepper spray and spray the outside surface of the window they don’t like the smell

How thick do the highlighter lines need to be? Klim says 2 mm thick, Is this true? Also, is yellow the most effective color to use?And does the highlighter have to be fluorescent? I'd be grateful for any advice.

We've got a few answers for you, but since this video is almost ten years old, we've learned a lot more about how to prevent birds from colliding with windows and our experts suggest that you visit the American Bird Conservancy’s Glass Collisions Solutions page abcbirds.org/solutions/prevent-home-collisions/

But to answer your other three questions more directly, some window treatments that have been tested and shown to be effective at reducing window collisions have lines as thin as 2 mm thick but these are also applied to the exterior not interior of the windows. The spacing of the marks is a critical aspect. If collisions involve small birds like chickadees and hummingbirds, the spacing should be no more than 2” between both horizontal and vertical marks.

As for the color of the marker, that has not been specifically tested. But color is less important than overall visibility to the birds. Many research-tested window treatments use black or white solid marks and apply them to the window exterior for maximum visibility.

Lastly, yes it should be a fluorescent highlighter. The effectiveness depends on the UV-reflectance that comes with fluorescent ink. However, not all types of birds perceive UV equally well, so UV-based treatments may not work as well on some types of birds.

Just tried the solution and it didn't work:(

Many times it works, but sometimes it doesn't. I don't know if its because of the window direction, or way that the light reflects, or what. I'm sorry it didn't work in your situation.

Put a plastic owl or falcon in the window. Try both inside or outside. Try Plastic toy snakes.

Does this keep them away? If not then you can also try the marker method or put paper cutouts of birds on the inside of the windows.
