This is so funny, not in a I'm making fun of you, kind of way. But, in a very humorous kind of way! I just had my 71st birthday this month. Just to let you know! But I honestly never, ever remember my mother outside playing with me or my siblings! We went outside and just played! Rode our bikes ( or tricycles when we were younger). Played games like hop scotch, red rover, dodge ball and such! There were no electronics!! I was about 5 or 6 when I saw my first TV!! Inside we colored, read books, played Jack's, pick up sticks. Boys played marbles inside and out!! And of course girls had dolls! And of course we fought and whined from time to time! But a little keen switch on the back of the legs took care of that pretty quickly!! No scars! Mentally, physically or emotionally!! Car trips called for a good book or a nap!!

Thanks for your comment I'm 29 with a second baby on the way and I get overwhelmed bc it seems like most moms go out of their way to create all these crafty projects. Not just like one a day, but all day. Don't get me wrong these are good suggestions but seems like a lot of work

I'm 58, raised 4 kiddos. Outside ours had to find fun on their own. In the house we played board games and card games in the evenings after dinner. Our 2 youngest have been using laptops/tablets since they were very young, so we did have screen time issues with them, but we really controlled how much they were allowed to be plugged in and it always had to be while in the family room. We read to our kids every night. But 85% of the time they had to use their own imaginations. On rainy days, they would pull all our couch cushions off and make forts with old blankets etc. When our kids complained they were bored...no problem, we would hand them a book. But times have definitely changed, some things for the better, some for the worst. I think Jordan is a good example of how todays parents can navigate their daily, busy lives. I admire her greatly.

As a woman in my 50's, my siblings and I were always outside. I hated being indoors. We made our own fun. Bikes, rollerskates, and dramatic play time. You pretend this, I'll pretend that. We would play school ( many years later, I still work in a classroom), house and Barbies. We were our own shows. My twin niece and nephew do not know how to play without an adult leading the action. They sit bored until I pull something out. My students lives revolve around screens as free babysitting. I have to remind them there is a world beyond the screens. I have to stimulate them dreaming beyond their screens.

We love to use $1 cookie sheet from Walmart instead of clipboards. The edge is great for containing snacks, spills, crayons, etc. Also being that it is metal you can use dry erase markers on it or you can use magnet tiles to play. My daughter has a magnet dolls and can draw a "house" with her white board markers. Of course it also works for using coloring sheets and such.

I definitely recommend Print, Play, learn it is a great website to go on all you have to do is go on safari and search it up and it is completely free and kid friendly. Some of the items on this website is coloring and learning activities.I also Really liked listening to the kid friendly podcast 6 minutes although I do think you have to download the app 6 minutes there are about 200 episodes all six minutes long that tell a full story. A great tip I have learned over the years if you or your kids are into face painting is dip colored pencils into water and you can draw on your skin but of course it washes off! Great tips my family also really likes Kiwico.I hope you can all find my tips useful.

In my class I have taken the floor is Lava game show and recreated it. I have done challenge rooms (similar to escape rooms but more diverse because they have a story and a goal). We have large age groups so we challenge the older kids to do one nice thing, sometimes more, for the little ones. That had allowed us to do chores without the small ones under foot.

I love this and her family. She is so organized and involved and I'm sure these ideas work well. I will implement the food day into my kids' life when they're older. But I will say, as one of 4 children, my parents never entertained us and we didn't have screens except very limited tv time (even though I grew up in an era of video games, handheld devices, and computers, we didn't use them except for school). If we told mom we were bored, we would get in trouble and be given more chores to do! My parents provided a structure of daily chores, tons of books, and a big yard. Beyond that, it was our job to figure out how to have fun! That fostered a lot of creativity and I know it was good for us. In summary, I don't think parents need to feel the pressure to be responsible for their kids' entertainment and it's good for kids to be responsible for their own fun.

Great tips in this video, I will try a lot of them. I am lighter on the learning activities during the break however. A break from learning during vacation is actually very beneficial to children’s brains. It is not that the information is lost: through relaxation and play, the brain has a chance to process the new information in the meantime. This is why after vacation and after a break from learning, some knowledge and skills actually “click”. It is why you find new inspiration and solutions to problems while relaxing and enjoying a walk for example.

We do not have a DVD player in our van and at least once a year we make a 4-18hr trip somewhere. We use backpacks. Each kid has a "travel backpack" that's one of those mini backpacks - a bit smaller than an etcha-sketch. In them they have "travel toys" that only come out for those bags. A notebook with a multi color pen from dollar tree. A fidget spinner. A handheld battery racing game from Walmart. A little handheld game where you have to get the marble into the hole. A boogie board. Water Wow books for my toddler. My son has a hand held 20 questions game. And they each get to bring three books that fit into their bag. We like golden edge books because they are thin but host many pages. Our last trip my son brought three "magic tree house" novels. These bags have been life savers!

Um, clipboards for the car? WHAT?! 🤯🤩 GREAT idea! My husband is always so quick to give my three boys (11, 8, and 4) video games when we make the hour-long drive to Grandma’s, and it drives me nuts. And kids’ podcasts are a great idea, too. I hope I can find some that will work for all three of mine. Great video! (And, yes, you did forget to list your favorites...could you add them?)

I think this is good for adults as well. I get caught up in doing something like youtube, hobbies or doing nothing. I live alone and have no accountabilty at the end of the day. I have very little to show for my time, a lot of the time. I get what is called "time drunk". If I schedule my gitt'er dunn's, chores, hobbies and I cant be bothered time, I would be more effective. Just like $$ budget, I need a time budget. Weekends if I do the brunt of my chores during the week, I will have a clean place without losing my weekend. I time budgeted for it. Time to get off of my screen and go to online educating.

How have you kept them sane with covid and not having friends over and stuff? Teaching them about safety and possibly not going back to school? Do you find that they can wear masks etc?

Thanks for sharing! How do you keep kids occupied without “screens” in the car if they get car sick easily? I’m an adult that gets car sick if I look down at anything, read in the car, etc. I have to look outside at the horizon or clouds to prevent from getting nauseous. I can’t imagine asking a child to read in the car and not expect them to vomit...especially on winding roads.🙂 Thanks!
