How to Keep Your FISHING Bait Alive 5x LONGER!

Here is a great example of how to keep your bait alive five times longer with three simple tips. You can also keep baitfish alive overnight or if you are kayak fishing all day. There are three simple variables that we must consider when trying to keep bait whether it be greenbacks, minnows, shrimp or crustaceans frisky. Number one is ammonia, ammonia has the tendency to build up over time as fish defecate and urinate in the water. A simple ammonia or water conditioner will help eradicate the build of ammonia and prevent half a dozen water changes. Here is a simple solution that you can purchase right online or at your local pet store: amzn.to/2yCx1Kc
Secondly is Oxygen, this is obviously important so the fish can breathe. The typical air stones that come with the bubblers are small, the more bubbles, the more oxygen it really is just that simple. Here is the stone I recommend: amzn.to/2Zu1JkK and it really is a small investment for what it provides.
Lastly is temperature, if you live in tropical climates the weather rapidly warms and so does the water in a small space. Add frozen bottles of water to the bucket will help reduce temperatures without diluting the overall salinity of the water. Just make sure the water temps don't get too cold or your bait will go into shock when you take them from 60-degree water to 90. This is a great DIY live bait tank or bucket that has proven to work over and over. It works as a saltwater bait tank or a freshwater bait bucket. I have aquariums and use SeaChem Prime in all of them. It removes ammonia and also dechlorinates. Drs. Foster and Smith Instant Ammonia Remover also works great and it’s much cheaper, so that’s what I use for my live wells and bait buckets. Ammonia is the one thing most people don’t consider with live baits. It builds up quickly in such a small quantity of water....so I’m glad you brought it up. For the viewers: It literally only takes a drop, so don’t think more is better...you’re just wasting it. One mL (or one drop will treat 10 gallons). Awesome job as always, JT. Keep up the great work👊🏻😎

You are correct, just a small drop does the job just fine. I would also like to add that fish expel ammonia via their gills as well. Ultimately if the problem is not fixed with a solution or water change then they will get nitrate poisoning.

Joshua Taylor Joshua Taylor Yessir! You must be an aquarist yourself. If you’re not then you should be because you know more than many in the hobby. Just to add one more thing to the points you made for your viewers... Adding a larger air stone is well worth the investment, as you said. The more bubbles are breaking the surface of the water, the more dissolved oxygen is in that water and more oxygen means more active baits. Sometimes those air stones get clogged with particulates. Just soak them in hydrogen peroxide overnight and rinse well and they’ll be good as new. Don’t discount JTs points because with a large bioload in such a small amount of water, the parameters can change very quickly and kill your baits or at the very least make them less active and diminish their presentation on your hook. These simple things can make a day on the water a successful one and have you spending more time catching game fish instead of catching baits. Excellent video. I’m glad you made it. That’s why your channel is the best.

@@TimsSchoolOfFish I agree! Seachem Stability is another great product though more for the aquariums. I used it along with prime for years with every water change. I never thought to add prime to my bait tanks!!!! Thanks!

Great tips. I also found out that if you add any marsh plants or sea grass with roots on the end, it gives shade + something the shrimps can hold onto for dear life while there’s lots of movement in the bucket, it greatly helps reduce stress and gives them a comfy place to chill before they get annihilated in the open waters :)

Great tips. I have been an avid aquarist (fish keeper) for 30 years. I exclusively use prime. It is held in high regard in the community. I have been using prime in my bait tank for years. I also agree with you on NOT adding loose ice. If you have to in a pinch, the prime witll nuetralize chlorine and chloromine from tap water as well!

Great stuff. You can also fill water bottles with local water salt/fresh and freeze them. When ready to use, remove cap and place in bucket. Keeps water cool and freshens up water at same time.

Thanks for the large aerator tip! I use the frozen water bottle too. Put it in a zip lock bag and throw it back in your cooler when not using it and keep it cold. Then remove it from the cooler/zip lock bag and back to the bait bucket. Just helps from getting your ice funky if ya have snacks and drinks in there

all the bubbles from the stones do is move water.... from the bottom to the top where the exchange of gasses takes place. It does not pump oxygen into the water, but that's what everyone thinks. Great video Sir. Will help a lot of people and bait.

The bubbles from the airstone only indirectly add O2 to the water. What they do is agitate the surface creating greater surface area for atmospheric O2 to enter the water.

Is there any reason why Mackerel would survive in a short rectangular styrofoam box with a lid, but not in a 5 gallon bucket? Both ran the same aerator, but for some reason, the Mackerel eventually die in the 5 gallon bucket. The only thing I could think of is that the styrofoam box keeps the temperature regulated longer. Despite having the Marine Metal Bubble Box which aerates 8 gallons for 44 hrs, no more than 3 Mackerel would survive at a time in the bucket, where as the styrofoam box would keep more Mackerel alive much longer.

The ONLY one I didn't know was the ammonia. Good advice bro. Any chance you might know why when I buy shrimp from My local shop the water is yellow? I keep forgetting to ask them (in a hurry to get fishing), but I'm serious, the water they give the bait in (your supplied container) is yellow as hell! And that's new for them, and the shrimps seem livelier. Nice vid amigo. Subbed.
@TimsSchoolOfFish
@TimsSchoolOfFish 5 жыл бұрын
Scott Michael It’s likely a water conditioner that removes ammonia, chlorines and chloramines, and also maintains pH (which shrimp are very sensitive to). Several types of pH buffers will turn the water yellow.
@Saltyscales
@Saltyscales 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott, Tim is correct. It is most likely a conditioner to help keep bait well. Bait shops sometimes have issues keeping bait alive if their system and water isn't up to par.

Why not just use a floating minnow bucket? I am afraid if I take your cold minnows and put them on my hook on a hot summer day that they will go into shock when they hit the hot summer water. Maybe the goal should be to weight them down and get them deeper water maybe they won't go in shock.
