@@jaketycyn4905 I mainly used LinkedIn and looked for recruiters. I had a fairly large portfolio project on my GitHub that demonstrated what I was capable of. Be sure to have a clear and concise CV clearly outlining your skills and expand on them in a cover letter. I've only had a couple of interviews - leetcode style questions never came up (it was mainly real-life whiteboarding questions). I'd also make sure you're able to clearly communicate concepts (as a self-taught programmer myself, I'd never had to explain my code to anyone else)

@@benjaminpike Thanks for the thorough response! I definitely have a lot of small adjustments and tweaks I need to make. If it's not too much, what sort of concepts do you think are best focusing on knowing the inns & outs of when explaining? Are these generic stuff like the general flow of user authentication/oauth type stuff or in general how you organized and transferred data within your application? Or is it something more particular?

Personal GitHub projects can make technical conversations more enjoyable, when you talk about your approaches to a problem, you can skip the difficult questions and get to the offer much faster. But most repositories should solve an interesting problem and have a little story behind it, not just center the form in HTML.

As software engineers, a lot of us were sold on the idea that our skills are in demand, yet the market feels so remote from that reality (or perhaps its my autism / interview skills) But I think for a lot of people that's the truth of it, and just knowing how to deploy a simple site for somebody or make their lives easier with tooling is where many of us should be looking...

From the standpoint of someone who was in tech during the 2008 crisis, this is some of the most sensible advice ever in this channel. "Become indispensable" is the best thing you can achieve. Even if it's only a facade. Even if it's only a "oh, they just know who can solve this issue we have in the project" or "oh, they can keep the users happy / out of our face / get the true specs they need" etc. Be someone your company / team cannot part with. Also, this is the time where the ace-in-the-sleeve called "people skills" really, REALLY shine. At this moment, as was back then, good engineers were a dime a dozen. But people you know you can "work well with"? Now, that's a different question.

We are in a financial recession. So anything that is related to interest rates is affected. For example if a business borrows money from a bank to pay employees rather than having revenue than that business won’t be able to do so as cheaply. If a business has strong cash flows ( a product that people pay for and can be made for less money than what they charge) then it’s in good shape.

Spot on, unfortunately. I was laid off from Amazon at exactly the 6 month mark. In my final month, I had started producing code for projects at roughly the same timeline it would have taken more senior engineers (on top of helping out peers and improving resources), which makes it feel like I was actually adding value. It seems weird to me that a company would decide to sink so much pay and signing bonus and recruiting cost into an employee only to let them go when they would actually start giving an RoI…

3:53 The problem with the prescriptions you made: 1. Everyone tries to appear as indispensable as possible on their resumes and in their interviews. In reality, it's a big challenge for companies to tell good and bad developers apart. The only ones that standout are the very talented ones, but they are far and few in-between. 2. I am from Canada, so I don't know how it is in the US, but in my experience companies generally don't browse prospective employees' GitHub pages unless they have some prior interest in hiring the candidate. Like for example, if you met a recruiter at a career or networking event, they might checkout your LinkedIn along with your GH. 3. A lot of people who make hiring decisions disregard software projects done for school, unless it is something extraordinary that you did for like a Master's degree or PhD. Making a todo list app with React, just doesn't cut it. 4. Contributing to OpenSource projects is a legit way of getting experience, but the barrier to entry is higher than people like to admit. It can take quite a significant time investment in getting up to speed with an OpenSource repo. Time that can be spent earning money in an in-between job. My suggestions: Keep steadily refining your skills and putting in the maximum effort to find a job, while maintaining an in-between job, but don't worry if you can't find one right away.
