How To Kick Start A Honda XL500R Or XR500 Motorcycle

I thought this would be helpful for any new Honda XL500 or XR500 motorcycle owners. See it at www.hoohoohoblin.com/HondaXL50... The bike doesn't want to start unless you do everything right, and if you make a mistake you can really hurt your foot. I demonstrate proper cold kickstarting procedure in flip-flops to prove it's safe and easy to start once you know how to do it. When I first got the bike, I was afraid to go anywhere on it, and even stalled it in traffic and had to push it to the sidewalk because I couldn't get it started again. Hope you never have to go through that, or the chronic sore instep of the improper kicker. The Honda XL500R motorcycle was designed so that you can kick start it in gear with the clutch pulled in, or in neutral without pulling in the clutch. See more pictures and info about my bike at www.hoohoohoblin.com/HondaXL50... If you click on the ads there, I get a nickel to help pay for my web hosting.

I had an XL500R new in '83, after reading favourable reviews in ' Bike ' magazine.I never had problems starting it, having been used to British singles with heavy flywheels which were easy.However, in the first week of ownership, after starting it on the first couple of turns,a blip of the throttle caused it to backfire and there was a ' pop ', and something flew in the air past my face, it was the whole carburettor body blown off the barrel !.It was repaired under warranty.

The first thing I do on any big thumper is disable the automatic decompression if I have an option for a manual decomp.. I found them to be unreliable and THAT leads to injury First, NEVER apply any throttle Second, roll it over a few times with the decompression engaged (use choke if it's cold enough to need it) Third, release decomp, roll it until is stops (that's the beginning of the compression stroke, not TDC as he says in the video) Fourth, roll it just a little farther, THAT is TDC and where you want to actually start from Lastly, using a strong but smooth kick, it'll fire right up. I'll do one better than flipflops, I'll do it barefoot, it wasn't much above freezing here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m5-Ap7V02rS3fp8.html

Great video. He's absolutely right about the decompression cable being properly adjusted. I have owned 4 XLs (2 currently) and I can start them first kick cold without finding Top Dead Center because the decompression is properly adjusted. Happy riding!!!

Hoohoo, thanks for the insight. We have emailed before, talking about that elusive luggage rack. Found one. My '82 500r didn't have the kicker compression release when I bought it, only the manual lever. You are right, they will hurt you unless you do it right. I still don't have the nerve to try it with flip flops, but you illustrated a good point. Thanks again. J in the other end of the state.

Thanks for this. i bought an old the great condition 1982 XL500R recently. I used to have a brand new XL250S in 1979 when I was a bit (Lot) younger. Having this vid sure gives me a bit more confidence to start my wee brute. Still get the occasional kick back when I try to get things happening on a cold morning but always get her turning over nicely. Only thing I've found is my speedometre is about 20kms or more out (Under) so not sure how this can be recalibrated (Or not). Cheers Kiwi

@hoohoohoblin That´s what I meant. It must be a XL 500 S engine when it´s from 1978, because the R model was build from 1982. The R model has an additional manual decompression (which is sometimes very useful to me). But what I wanted to say: you could generally say "How to kickstart a XL500 / XR500" ;-) There aren´t too many differences between the R and S models. I have 2 of them. These are great bikes. I love them. Oh and great tutorial and webpage!

the oldskool fourstrokes can backfire real bad, and some of them can be really nasty. Modern fourstroke singles have automatic centrifugal decompressors built into the exhaust camshaft, so they are much better behaved.

I've just bought a 1984 Yamaha xt600, and it's very difficult to start. I've read your comments, and I'd like to know a little more about the 'click' that you are referring to. After watching this video a few times I went out and tried to start it, with no luck. I do have a new spark plug on order, hoping that helps. I'm finding top dead center, pushing through it, returning the kicker to the top, and then kicking all the way to the bottom. Not much luck so far. Any suggestions?

I just bought a 1982 xl500r that hasn't been started since 2004. I have a lever under the clutch lever that I guess is a secondary decompression lever? Drained the tank and am going to remove and soak the carb in cleaner next. The bike sat in heated storage it's entire live. 3000 miles on the clock. Original owner old as balls, never dropped. $500. Will be a deal if it starts.

Judging from the knee dent in the gas tank, I`m not sure I would follow this procedure. You want to kick it down slowly until top dead center - with the key OFF. It shouldn`t take 4 kicks to find TDC. Once you find TDC, then turn the key on and kick it!

First I'd like to thank you for your video, it was helpful when I got my first bike, 82 XL500 this year. I was wondering if you have any input on what a good gearing might be for highway. I do a lot of trail riding, really mellow stuff though, but to get to the trail I'm finding myself letting a lot of cars by on the small highway. The bike can go fast in spurts, but I feel like the engine is screaming if I keep it at 60-70. Maybe it's okay, but just feels painful so I don't keep it pinned like that often. I cruise it take my time. I would like to get a tad bit more speed, or maybe not even speed just quiet it down a bit not stress the engine as much.
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 8 жыл бұрын
Mine has a 14-tooth sprocket in the front, which is bigger than stock, for more top end speed. It cruises pretty good on the freeway. On really steep trails off road it bogs down a little bit in first gear and I have to slip the clutch.

Thanks for the super helpful video. I just bought a 1980 honda xl 500s. In your video you mention the lack of a tachometer, and on the speedometer the numbers that indicate gears relative to speed. Is that really accurate? It seems really high to me--second gear to 40 mph, and 3rd at 55?

i had one of those with the kickstarter shaft broken clean at the case. I'd have to push start it, but as easy as just pushing the bike a few feet is all. Put it in second gear, gas on, choke on, and preferably on hard ground, like asphalt, pull the compression release handle on the bars and start pushing, the motor will start to turn over, throttle none, and let go of the compression release like magic the motor would be running. Only it had a history of stalling in a pocket of sand that I'd have to push out of to a high point to start.

Mine doesn't have the handlebar compression release, so it's a lot harder to push start, but my Royal Enfield has a handlebar compression release and it is easy to push start the way you describe.

they're so temperamental. only a few days ago trying to start an 83/84 xr500r after changing a air cut of valve ( the idle screw was all the way out.) felt like i broke an ankle trying to kick it in tennis shoes and it kicked back also , it was hangin up just like in your video rolling over TDC, I gave just a little more slack in the kicker C/release cable and it fixed that. .. rode it since 1987 only added gas changed oil but rarely the filter, never ever looked at screens, gas and oiled the chain, cleaned the air cleaner. never washed it, started chiseling off the caked on dirt a year ago. the chain and sprockets are finally wearing out along with the sliders. i bought it from a weekly desert racer, it's tough bike. the one i had without the kickstarter the 82, had way more power than the 83 6 speed. the 6 speed is a Cadillac.

After iI did the compression test I got 40PSI only and then I put just a little gas through the spark plug hole. Then I got a better noise and a better sound as if it would get to start. But it still won't after doing all the right adjustment with the throttle and the choke. Can someone help me? I'm getting disappointed and can't wait until my bike works!! Thanks, Stéphanie

I rebuild it with a system of brass bushing (invented by me hehe) and she's almost starting again. Definitely need to ajdust or take a look at the valves. thanks for you reply :)

@jellyking12345 on bigger bore bikes the motor could backfire if kicked wrong. once you get at about 250cc you'll have problems kicking the bike if you don't do it right. but anyway the bikes kickstarter will kick back up and jam your foot.

It must be the utilitarian in us. Ha. The torque, power curve, fuel mileage, and yes, the sound. Until recently 500cc motorcycles were "the benchmark" until manufacturers started upping thee ante to 650cc. I miss my old 64 Triumph Tiger, but not the hassle of keeping it in tune. Even though, I may be chasing a bullet in the near future. What is it about British 500's?

I cant believe im commenting here. Turn on the gas, turn on the choke, gently kick the bike over untill your at TDC (top dead center) compression stroke. Then w/out giving the bike any throttle, give it a strong swift kick. Repeat the TDC part and try again untill it fires. If it wont start then your not getting spark and or fuel. Starting a bike is only like 1% of the skill it takes to ride one. Be safe :)

you never finish learning eh? now im a bit wiser, didnt know bout such thing, kicking until tdc comp.stroke... bikes i met with, were different, at least i didnt have to search for that spot where you kick save, one of mines does that too if i kick too slow and weak, but starts - gas on, choke on, ignition, kick out, kick, bla bla bla, thanks anyway :)

Dont you have a decomp hendle on the leftside of the steering?
@hoohoohoblin

Nope. On these Hondas they just put it on as part of the kickstart lever. Most other motorcycles have decompression on the handlebar. I wish this one did.

No. This one doesn’t have a cable you can pull. The cable is connected to the kickstart lever.

Does a Honda xr650r kick start the same way yours does?
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 10 жыл бұрын
Probably, but I am not sure, because I have never done it. Look and see if there is an automatic compression release like the one on my bike in the video. If not, the compression release may be a lever on the handlebar.

On the freeway when I get it over 70 miles an hour with the standard dirtbike fender, the wind folds it down into the tire and it rubs. So I went with the Motard fender instead.
