This video was so helpful. When I was young, my grandfather would take me fishing. He taught me everything about catching the fish, but not how to clean and filet them. He'd let me watch sometimes, but he didn't really explain what he was doing and he was so good at it and so fast it never really stuck to my brain. I fished with him all the way up until I was 20 and got married. He never did walk/talk me through the cleaning/fileting process. After he died, I was still in my 20's, I was reminiscing with my grandmother about fishing with him and how he never taught me to clean/filet. She told me it was because that was the hardest thing for him to do, all the guts and blood bothered him and he never could get used to it so he'd get that part done as fast as possible. I'm still amazed he fished and hunted when doing that bothered him so much.

A lot of fishing and hunting is not blood and guts, even a day with no catch is great so long as you have the right mindset. I think it's pretty common and normal for people to not like the grisly parts of these sports, that's why so many fisherman are catch-and-release. Your grandpa sounds like a cool guy.

Hey man! Appreciate this video. It's always good to show people how easy it is to dispatch a fish in a humane way, and to properly take care of the meat after you've harvested the animal. I learned how to gut a fish pretty much the same way, except for removing the gills entirely, since they can rot pretty quick. isn't that what you want to do for transport?? Other than that, nice work! Can't wait for the Coho to start running here in B.C!

For those saying the blunt force is inhumane, a heavier hit with a stronger hit would be better, but fish are VERY weak to blunt force, unlike humans and other animals that can tank some head hits, fish are under water and due to their nature never hit their head. A hit will instantly disorientate the fish, stopping it from almost all pain, and generally knocking it completely asleep or dead instantly. This is more humane than a knife cut through the brain which creates likely a searing pain for about 1-2 seconds. Just because the fish stops moving doesn't mean it's instantly dead and can no longer feel. But just because a fish still twitches or moves doesn't mean it's alive or feeling pain.

A good few swift knocks to the noggin is what it needs, and this dude didn't do that. A stick doesn't work that well. Need a good rock or an iron/steel rod. This poor fish suffered a bit, between the extended time out of water before getting hit, the lack of enough force, and poor aim, the fish likely suffered more than it needed to. Yank it out of the water, once you know it's what's for dinner, knock the shi out of it.

This was super useful! Thanks for the information and the technique sharing. I always carry a small boning knife in a hard plastic scabbard when I fish and if I get a keeper (Salmon or Trout) I give it a firm whack with the tang of the knife against the head on a hard surface, then separate the spine through the gills just like you showed. If you're going to harvest fish have the decency to minimize the suffering of the animal before you eat it. Good work! And keep it up, you've got a viewer for life in me.

Please for the love of fishing and the next generation of anglers and future huge trout practice catch and release always. Also, beating the poor oxygen breathing trout on dry land with a stick several times is more suffering. The fish can't breathe and now your slowly beating it with a branch. Just cut it's head off and gut and filet it and leave scraps for other wildlife. You probably shouldn't have made that video. Not a very helpful tip but filets de trout looked tasty and fresh. Good clear tutorial on filleting! Thank you! I learned from a guy that usually used an electric carving knife. If my memory isn’t really off, seems like he was taking about 10 seconds per fish. And after cutting the filet away from the backbone but before he severed it from the tail, he flattened it out on his table skin-side down and also used the knife to remove the skin. This was on large-mouth bass in the 2-4 lb range.

Interesting video. I thought you would immediately cut out the gills, as I was taught, for a quick dispatch. Hitting the fish on the head was reserved for much larger fish in order to make it easier for the angler to continue dressing the fish and removing terminal tackle. Good video.

This was seriously one of the most efficient and informative videos on this I've ever seen! I've been fishing catch-and-release for most of my life, and I figured it was about time to start learning and getting myself geared up to properly kill and fillet a fish. Even here on KZfaq, I've seen lots of the bigger-name fishermen struggle to do this, so it's a god thing y'all have such a good video on it. I genuinely feel like I could go out and do this now. I'm sure it takes some trial and error in practice, but at least I have a solid idea of what to do.
