In this video I’ll be showing how to eradicate poison ivy from your yard using non toxic formula. And the sheet mulch method to cover over and kill the vines .

Thanks for making this vid - I've been thinking of doing this with the cardboard & mulch - great tip on getting it wet before putting the mulch down 👍🏻🙏🏻🍀💚

Glad I could Help.. I pulled the surrounding vines so i didn’t have so much to cover . Worked really well… just monitor it and check to see if any vines poke out and you can just grab em… 2 months on now and I’m looking good in my yard 🤙🏻

Our local conservationist horticulturist says that this can negatively affect the soil. He recommends smothering it with cardboard alone as the most environmentally friendly method to eradicate it. Your method could harm the nearby tree roots. You should probably test the soil a few days later and may have to add some lime to get the pH back to normal if it's too acidic.

Yes when you put too much mulch around a Mature tree it can cause problems, it can cause the roots to grow upwards… I’m doing it just a light bed over the cardboard and it’s only on one side of the tree.. (a study from pennstate university states 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch can re-create aspects of a forest's soil environment) it’s a common debate to put mulch around trees or not.. some say it’s really good for young trees because on nutrition and can speed up the growth rate. Thanks for comment 🙌🏻

Instead of using sodium chloride, I use magnesium sulfate (aka Epsom salt), which is beneficial to plants at the correct dose. Too much will kill most plants. I use 2 cups of full strength white vinegar (regular kind), 1/4 cup magnesium sulfate and some dish soap. I haven't tried it on poison ivy yet, but it kills grass and other annoying weeds that grow in cracks in concrete. However, I noticed it doesn't have much effect on wild violet, though. I'll have to experiment with it some more.

The iodine/regular salt is corrosive and lasts years in the soil, so it is difficult to introduce plantings. My understanding is that Epsom salt is not quite as toxic and should not clog the sprayer/settle to the bottom, and you should shake the sprayer to keep the ingredients mixed. I have PI (8' plant next to privacy fence and 5 small ones in unattended flower garden) and I am going to use this spray instead of leftover Roundup Poison Ivy Killer (works very well but toxic). I do all organic now. Thanks for this info (especially personal protection) and people's comments.

The salt Is key I think … soap is to make it stick to the leaves… honestly I think the blanket of cardboard and mulch is a big factor… it blocks out sunlight and makes it die off.. I just did both to be sure.. 2 month on and I have no ivy in that spot.

I just pulled the perimeters so I didn’t have to cover such a large area with cardboard… I sprayed it all in order to kill the leaves so it would not continue to populate. I actually left all the pulled vines under the cardboard and mulch so I did not have to dispose of them . Once the vines are cut off from sunlight they die. Spraying them just helps speed it up. Thanks for comment 🤙🏻

Unfortunately there are small runners that can be missed. This extra step does help with that. Also even though the vines are "dead", the urushoil lasts for up to 5 years. Note: when washing do not scrub your skin hard. By doing so it will warm up the skin and draw the urushiol into the skin.

When I find poison ivy it feels pretty natural to me to get out the glyphosate. I mean it’s as ”natural” as cardboard. And glyphosate doesn’t kill everything. Just what you squirt it on. If it’s green. Why in the world do people insist in doing everything the hard way? Because of some false misconception that salt & vinegar are more environmentally friendly? They’re not!

Extra strength vinegar ??? Bottle says it's only 30% (duh)
@Build_the_life_you_want
@Build_the_life_you_want Жыл бұрын
Well, without getting into the geeky minutia, full strength vinegar contains 6% acetic acid, and double strength vinegar contains 10% acetic acid. Regular 'white' vinegar only contains 5% acetic acid, and that's the stuff responsible for the cleaning aspect of vinegar. So in this case, more is indeed better. And this bottle contains 30% so (duh) ?? Thanks for your input pal much appreciated 🤙🏻

@@Build_the_life_you_wantUnfortunately I investigated this and was told by a conservation expert that goats focus mostly on eye level plants and that sheep are better, but it's extremely expensive to rent either of them and it takes several rounds over multiple years. He said that smothering by cardboard is the fastest, cheapest, and most environmentally friendly way to remove it. He also said that the vinegar treatment is unnecessary and may damage the Ph of your soil.
