Hiya Scott! I feel confident going to battle the spider mite infestation on my indoor creeping jenny thanks to you! My creepy jenny is a fighter tho, got her at a nursery over the summer - three clear eggs and a scary half inch mystery larvae were living around the roots. I used neem oil extract and water but now I know I can add soap to it! I also did not know you could use canola oil, that's awesome!

For my potted plants, I also found that moving them into my shower and “hosing” them off with my detachable shower head and then applying neem oil helped too. Between sprays I also think I’m gonna try checking my leaves daily, wiping them down with alcohol on a microfiber cloth, and then gently misting them with water to keep the environment from getting dry enough to keep those suckers happy. Thank you for all your info

Thanks for the info! I am growing a few summer and winter squash this year. I've never had success with squash, powdery mildew and now I wonder if I had some of the spider mites. I'm quite up north from you so mine aren't in the garden yet, but I will pick up some neem oil and be ready! On another topic, I purchased my first fig starting's. I finally found a hearty variety for my 6B zone. I see that you are quite a fig grower! As a matter of fact, that might be what inspired me to buy these plants. I was looking to see if you had a playlist of your fig videos and I didn't see one. Are there any you would recommend for a newbie fig grower? Thanks so much!

Wow, Scott those spider mites really got a hold of that spinach. Neem is a great way to deal with spider mites, another great product which is also organic is SB plant invigorated, this is a soap-based solution, both of these will help with spider mites. Ideally catching them before they get to this stage though. Time to get the folia sprayer working and dealing with them. Great video Scott. Hope you get on top of them quickly. Tony

Last year I grew my first zucchini plant and I had spider mites but I didn’t know what they were and my plant just died off with only a few zucchini having been taken off. I wasn’t sure what to do and had hoped that just washing them off in the morning with a Hose spray might take care of them,but now I see that they are in fact a bug which needs to be smothered out over a bit of time. Thanks for the demonstration here. I’ll be ready this season!

Great info and you're the only one who's mentioned the little bit of info I've been after. I knew they could travel on the wind but wasn't sure if they blew around like a spec of dust or did it the same way some spiders do by parachuting on a tiny piece of silk. I suspected they probably did. It makes sense with them being so small, but I wasn't sure. But I suspect they probably got into my grow room because I wasn't careful enough after being in the garden though. I thought it might happen sooner or later and I'd tried to be careful, but not careful enough apparently. Oh well, ya live and learn I suppose.

in early stadium they dont use net for that, that is when the problem is BIG, may be THEN ...i have them since 3 grows.. i used neem-oil and lady bugg larves (better than grown ones) NOW lets see--
@28russ
@28russ Жыл бұрын
@@Erika_Kohl The easiest way is to starve them out. I grow my clones and veg plant in a cupboard and then flower the plant in a grow tent. They're close by each other but fortunately I only had them in my flowering tent. So I cleaned the tent thoroughly but then didn't put another plant in it for about a month. They can only survive for a week or 2 while not feeding on a plant so if there was any left in the tent they starved to death. So if possible don't grow in the space they're in for a few weeks and they'll die without you having to do much. Or another time I had them whilst growing 9 plants in a much bigger space. I found them whilst the plants were still in veg and tried neem oil and a few other spray on chemicals but nothing I tried would fully eradicate them. So in the end I used flea bombs which did the job. Ya can flea bomb vegs plants and just wash if off but don't use them on heading plants or you'll end up smoking some nasty chemicals. So anyway, if you're struggling to get rid of them flea bombs are the go. I hope this helps and good luck getting rid of the little bastards lol.

You should see the bugs dying off in a day or two (at least that's what happened with my mites), but the damage is done to the leaves and on my squash, few leaves made it, I have to wait for new ones to come in. you had 56 ounces in your bottle,, that is closer to a 1/2 gallon ( 64 oz ) One gallon is 128 oz. The amount of Neem you added was way too much which can really burn your plants that are sensitive to Neem oil. Use 1/4 of an ounce to 32 oz of water is much safer and still super effective. Free pouring your neem in the sprayer is not good either Scott. You really need to measure accurately. Like your video and not trying to do anything but help with this problem of spider mites. Works great on aphids too!

I noticed that I do not get mite issues unless everything is super dry and super hot and the plants are stressed out. I also noticed water spray keeps the mites down enough for me. Same with the white flies when I used to get them. I am now in a place that seems to be too dry for them. But I used to just spray under the leaves with water, disturbing them. It lessened them to where there were barely any white flies. After awhile, my plants were essentially free of white flies. I think it was not just water. They also do not like disturbance. Nowadays, if I see white flies, the first thing I do is just shake the leaf or plant. For some reason, if they cannot settle, they move on. Generally away from my garden.

@ScottHead

I'd keep the soil, just be alert for the pests. I'm not sure the mites hang out or travel with soil, but they are easily controlled if you see them, just have to catch them early before they take over.

But the leaves don’t look great. Is it too late for it?

You will need to spray with something more than water, try the Neem oil, but in the mean time, try dish soap, a teaspoon mixed in a half gallon to a gallon of water. Spray with that. Unfortunately, spider mites work very quickly and if you see web, it can be too late. However, even if your plant drops all of iits leaves, give it time, it might bounce back with a new set of leaves.

Thank you for this video. I have a bunch of tomato plants growing. And I had put up some bamboo sticks to help raise the tomatoes off the ground. I did see some webbing on the cherry tomatoes and also on the leaves. I just thought it was actual spiders. But then it started to cover the entire plant. And these tomatoe plants I have a large and growing crazy on the ground wildly. One day I started to notice literally thousands of red bugs on top of each of the bamboo sticks and up and down the stems. I zoomed in with a macro lenses and thought actual spider eggs had hatched. looked like they were reaching for the heat and sun. I live in southern california. So I got some insecticide made from chrsanthemum extract. It seemed to kill the ones that came in contact with the spray but the next day they were back. Only after seeing some vids do I now know they aren't actual spiders but spider mites with explains the webbing. I had cut some leaves off and throw them in my green waste bin and the next morning there were spider mites all around the rim of the waste bin even with the lid shut. So long story short, thanks to your video, I know now a safe way to kill them all with neem oil. And if in a pinch can just use soap and water. I assume dish soap will do? @@graedot just half cup of neem oil in a 5 gallon bucket?? And u don’t add anything else to it like a drop of soap? So I’ve been using a handheld Stihl bg50 and blowing the leaves of my burning bush 1x/day. The spider mites are small and they just blow right off the leaves. I also blow all the leaves that fell off already away and bag it up and dispose of it so that any eggs that are on it are gone. Then I make sure my irrigation hits the plant every night as well. It has done wonders in putting the spider mite population down.

I think spray alone doesn't really work. You gotta get in with a brush and physically remove a lot of them. When I do that, I see the best results. But you've got to do it multiple times. So if you physically scrub off the hatched ones, then miticides will get the ones that you miss/ target the eggs. You've also got to make sure you are getting the good neem oil as he says in the video. 100% pure and cold pressed. You also have to worry about the mites becoming resistant to the neem oil, so physically removing as many as you can is really the best idea.

Funny you mention the cats. In our city there’s a bylaw that forbids allowing your cat to roam free,they kill song birds which may be of a threatened species and really annoy neighbours who have gardens(like me) I have had a cat scratching up my plants for 2 seasons and the city really can’t do anything...unless they catch the cat. BUT I am not allowed to catch it for them!... that’s animal cruelty ..🙄 my solution,since I am but a humble citizen with a garden,is to put chicken wire over my garden beds.... so annoying that I have to do it,but I don’t want to have negative interactions with my neighbours even if their pets ARE a problem.

Have you ever used all natural ingredients that you can still eat ? You chop up 10to12 habonaros peppers and put on the stoe in a 2quart pot in a quart of water and simmer it for 45mins to an hour till it burns your eyes when you put your eyes over it. Strain it squeeze n mash the seeds n pulp up but dont get any pulp in you water cause when you put it in the sprayer it will clog it. This will burn the mites rite off the plant. Do 3 applications every 1day then every 2 days. Wash after this and use if needed again. But you should be bug free for awhile.
