Step by step instructions for a very easy dishcloth knitting pattern for beginners
►►► GET THE FREE PATTERN HERE: nimble-needles.com/patterns/e...
Materials you will need:
- A worsted cotton yarn. I am using the Catania Grande: bit.ly/354ESkw
- Knitting needles size 7/4.5 mm; I am using the Knitter's Pride Dreamz: amzn.to/2MxO3DK
- Scissors: amzn.to/3bjNDLJ
- Tapestry needle: amzn.to/2LiWGkS
*Note: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The pattern is available for free on my blog and it is a lovely and very easy project for beginners. You only need to know how to knit the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and of course a cast on and a bind off. It takes me less than an hour to finish one. So it’s perfect if you want to knit more than one or need a cute little gift.
Start knitting this dishcloth by casting on 32 stitches with a long tail cast-on leaving a tail of 5 to 6 inches. If you don’t know how to cast on stitches yet, read this tutorial: nimble-needles.com/stitches/h...
And then you need to knit 5 rows of garter stitch.
Once you finished those first 5 rows, the repeat changes to:
• Row 6: K3, *K1,P1*, K3
• Row 7: K3, *K1,P1*, K3
• Row 8: K3, *P1,K1*, K3
• Row 9: K3, *P1,K1*, K3
Essentially this boils down to a simple moss stitch with a 3-stitch garter-stitch selvage. It’s a very simple repeat and you only need to pay attention that you switch every two rows. Here’s how to knit the purl stitch: nimble-needles.com/stitches/h...
Once you finished row 41, knit 4 more rows of garter stitch, and then change colors. I’m using white yarn but you could use any other kind of contrasting color as well. You could also simply knit across as well and knit your dishcloth in just one color.
And at the end of my row, tie a knot with the two ends. Then, you can cut away the teal yarn leaving a tail of 5 inches or so.
And then, cast off all stitches with a normal bind-off. If you don’t know how to bind off yet, read this tutorial: nimble-needles.com/stitches/h...
When there’s only one stitch left. Cast on 18 stitches with a knitted cast on. nimble-needles.com/stitches/h...
And then, bind off these 18 stitches straight away. This will create a little strap. Cut off the yarn and use the tail to attach the end of your strap to your dishcloth, and weave in the other tails.
And that's how to knit a dishcloth. Feel free to comment in case you still have any questions

I have to thank you Norman. After only knowing the knit stitch and failing to finish scarfs and blankets for over a decade, this project, and your accompanying videos, taught me to purl, do the moss stitch, and knit cast on. One of your videos also helped me fix a dropped stitch. Excited to actually create and gift beautiful items I have made!

I've been knitting the continental way for many years, but I learned something new from you. I did the cast on differently but your way is much better, and also the cast-off, I used to knit 2 together and return the stitch on the left needle, but again, your way is better. Thank you. I have also been making dish cloths, my son and daughter-in-law like the knitted ones, and I wanted to try a different pattern. I haven't tried the one you demonstrate, and I am doing that one right now. Again, thank you.

I am getting the yarn tomorrow. I think this will be a good project to re-learn the pear stitch. Having been a mostly self-taught continental knitter, i looked at your better pearl stitch video and you finally did my version, I twist my peal stitches… But I think when I get to lace work that is more than YO, I might be in trouble. I have no problems with 2 color knitting but it might be a good time to develop a better habit. These dish cloth/hot pads might take awhile lol. But better now than never. Yes you can teach an old dog new tricks!😂

@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 3 жыл бұрын
sure, you could use the same pattern for a baby blanket. Though, you might want to skip on the hanger (or maybe even not, could be handy nevertheless): Can't tell you how many stitches you need to cast on tho. I can tell you that my dishcloth is around 18-19cm wide.. Now...just multiply my cast on recommendation a couple of times until you reach the width you are looking for. ;-)

@@tahneetruscott2029 that is not true. At least from my point of view. that's why all my tutorials come with a video AND separate written instructions on my blog. That's why you will find schematics and close-up macro shots of all important steps in all my written instructions. that's why all my videos come with closed captions. that's why I switched to yarn/needles that work for color/vision impaired users in my newer videos. That's why I try to gesture a lot as I talk, while keeping the focus in the upper half of the screen so it does not interfere withcaptions. That's why I try to keep my backgrounds clean and simple, and I try not to ramble too much or use flashy things. Of course. I am only one person here and there are limits to my capabilities. And this is an older video where I still had to learn quite a bit about these things or rather how to implement them. Still, if you feel that there are things I could make better, name them and I can try to account for them in future videos and tutorial.

i can't tell you why that is. But have you tried blocking your finished projects?

Heads up that the pattern mentions casting on 30 stitches, and the video mentions 32, which makes a bit more sense with the row repeats.

Sorry for my earlier comment. Kindly look at the pattern again. There are two versions: one with moss stitch and one with double moss stitch. They have different cast-on requirements. The first pattern on my blog is for double moss stitch (30) while I knit normal moss stitch (32) here in this video. It's the second variation in the pattern/on the blog.

@@NimbleNeedles Yes, you're right. I see that now! Now I have to decide if I want to double single or double moss stitch?
