Many people have asked me to share a detailed video on how I knit continental style. The goal, no matter how you knit, is to be efficient with your hand movement to limit the amount of motion you make. Everyone is different and different methods feel more comfortable for different people, so I just encourage you to knit in a way that feels most comfortable for you.

Thank you for this! I’m usually knit using the English method but am learning Continental. Would LOVE to see a video on doing the Purl stitch in Continental! That’s my challenge right now.

I'm right-handed, knitting continental (and also Eastern European style), i hold the yarn similar way to yours (but w/o wrapping yarn around my fingers, even if the yarn is thin). I do not use my left hand finger to push the yarn, in fact my left hand is pretty "passive", no idea how to explain it, all work is basically done with my right hand and the working needle, i simply grab the yarn with that needle without any extra help with pushing or throwing the yarn with my fingers, that way I reduce any extra movements and have no pain in my hands or fingers :)

Dear Ashley, I have to take this chance , once I am up in the comments list to thank you for your videos once more. I am doing this beautifull vest copying your pink sweater, you know, the boxy one with thight sleeves, with a beatifull yarn that I have in my stash over 15 years. I am not knitting the sleeves. I saw your tutorial and had imediate vision of a vest version...thank you for sharing. I already had more visions using your simple models with some diferent yarns I havein my pile here in Lisbon. Lots of love from Lisbon!!!

I'm a crocheter first for a couple of years before I learned how to knit. I would think that knitting Continental Style would be my first go-to style but it isn't. I knit English Style and I think the way I knit is what others call it "a thrower". I still consider myself a newbie when it comes to knitting but I noticed that I am knitting just a tad faster than when I first started. I haven't been able to crochet because I'm just addicted to knitting right now. I'm currently working on The Winter Bluff Sweater using #4 weight yarn and I am loving it. Thank you. 😊

Hello there from Alaska 🏔💕. I’m a leftie who has been knitting English style forever. How’s the winter bluff in the 4 wt yarn going? I’ve not ever made a sweater from the top down. Deciding which yarn to try it with - thick and quick or 4wt - is driving me crazy. Lol. I’ve knit and crochet sweaters so I’m nervous. Lol. I primarily use circular needles. Thank you in advance

@@elizabeth4053 - Hello there. I'm not sure if your comment is towards me or to Ashley. But, I thought I would respond anyway (just in case your comment is for me to respond). I finished it and I love it so much. I haven't woven the ends but will do so later today because I will be wearing the sweater tomorrow. I've only done sweaters from top down because I don't like doing the purls. I also like simple stitches (stockinette only for me). No cables or anything fancy stitches out there. hehehe... I love circular needles. I don't like using straight needles as it becomes heavy to handle. Ashley has another pattern using a thicker yarn. Maybe do that pattern first and see if you like working with a top down pattern. Once you're done, then maybe you can make this pattern of hers. Happy knitting. 😊

I knit English style (self taught or “KZfaq taught” haha) and want to learn Continental or “picking”. One thing I have discovered though is that the amount of slipped stitches can be reduced with the choice of needle. I love wooden needles but a lot of them have very blunt points which can slow you down and makes things clumsier. I discovered KnitPicks wooden needles and now I don’t want to use any others! The points are pointier and harder and you kind of get the best of metal and wooden needles in one. This is not a commercial for them, I’m just an advanced beginner knitter and the owner of a knit shop turned me onto these and I just think they are awesome. Good luck with your knitting- and I’m resolved to learn continental!

I learned to knit English style when I was very young. I never knit much. I found it so difficult. As an adult, I decided to take a knitting class and the teacher knit continental style. Wow! It was a game changer! I find it so much easier and so knitting is more enjoyable for me. Thank you for all your great videos!

I learned with the long tail cast on. But now I prefer the knitted cast on. I don't even remember how to do the long tail cast on anymore. Your video was very insightful. I learned some new ways to cast on. I can't wait to try them.

I'm a left-handed crocheter learning how to knit. With crochet I hold my hook in my left hand and the yarn in my right. I learned how to knit right-handed and since muscle memory is in my right hand for tension, I still hold the yarn in my right hand. I want to learn continental to knit faster. Thank you for this video. I'll keep trying the continental method.

Great video! I’m a new knitter, I really love it! I run into a few problems like sometimes I’ll count my stitches and realise 4 or 5 stitches have appeared from nowhere 😭. I’m comfortable doing it the English way but I’m still learning so maybe I should try this way?

Nice demo. I’m right handed and always worked English style but can see that continental looks faster especially if you’re left handed. Trying this style but it’s making knitting slower because stitches are falling off more easily as you said. Guess it just takes more practice. What about purling?
@AshleyLillisKnits
@AshleyLillisKnits 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely takes practice…. Hope to have a video on purling soon! I do it differently than most and am not as efficient but it works for me!

That’s just fascinating. I didn’t even know Continental style existed, although I’ve seen people knit that way. I’m also left-handed and was taught to knit right-handed by a neighbor when I was 8 years old, so I knit really quickly that way but! I learned crochet as an adult and it was just impossible for me to learn right-handed, finally caught the hang of it once I started to hold the hook in my left hand. Just goes to show how elastic the brain is for a child 😅 I don’t think I could ever get used to the Continental method at this point lol 😂 thank you for the video!
