In a society where so many feel unseen and unknown, how do we become the kind of people who deeply see and know those around us? The conflict and division in our society demonstrate the need for people committed to pursuing human connection, even across lines of difference. What can we do - as individuals and in community - that will help us really understand the people in our lives?
David Brooks, New York Times columnist and author of How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen, joined us for an Online Conversation on Friday, October 27 to explore what it means to know others and to be known by them.
Thank you to our sponsors for this event: Praxis Circle; Bill and Dana Wichterman; David Campaigne with Ronald Blue Trust; a Trinity Forum Senior Fellow who wishes to remain anonymous; and five donors who contributed to a matching grant.

Thank you for this thoughtful discussion. I looking forward to reading the book to learn more about asking questions, and learning to listen to others more deeply. Some of us have a 'backlash' feeling (fear) after opening up to others, because we have been hurt by doing so. I mistrust the most those people who get angry with me if I'm not so open about answering their questions. Yet sometimes I talk too much and don't listen well enough. Thank you for the tips, I really need them and don't want to be a 'topper', and good to know the pause is OK, I don't have to come up with a question immediately to fill the void. "Depression is a malfunction in the instrument you use to perceive reality." Suffered with this malfunction 38-39 years ago, this definition hits the nail on the head.

The Word of God says that there are two things that help us to know a person: - What they speak. A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes. A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. (Luke 6:43-45 NLT) - How they behave. A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions. (Matthew 7:17-20 NLT)
