Glad to hear how you store your dahlias because I stored mine in an open box in my garage 2023-2024 and they all survived! In the past I have tried storing the tubers wrapped in newspaper and placed in a closed container and not many survived. I live on the coast of MA. Maybe we just had a mild winter. But I'll store them like you again. I tuned in to learn how to divide dahlia tubers and got a great education! Thank you

I live in the uk, and have grown bishop of Llandaff dahlia for the last 3 years. I left it in the ground with old compost piled over the top. Because we don't get the really cold weather like the U S gets my dahlia never gets the frosted treatment, so I just wait till its obvious to cut it back. Now I have had to dig it up, it has grown so huge it is overwhelming the area I planted it in. I have donated it to a friend who has a much bigger garden. From now on, because I am 70 , have a very small fadden, and nowhere to store my dahlia, I am going to treat it as an annual, so I whole heartedly support your final suggestion. In the UK we can buy dahlia tubers for around £7.99 so it doesn't break the bank to do that. I could even leave it in the ground fir 2 years and replace after that. Thanks for the video

I just moved to the south zone 8a a year ago. I planted dahlias this past year and I am going to leave them in the ground and see what happens. I don’t really have a place to store them. I loved all your info! I have to think like you as well, it is either sink or swim because I just don’t want to fuss too much with whatever I plant. Great video! 🥰

I looked up putting cardboard in the garden and your video came up. Loved the way you say “not an expert” but what works for you. Then I have 1 dahlia bulb that I’ve had for several years planted in the ground but this spring I dug it up and grew it in a pot. Looked up how to over winter it and again your video came up. I’m going to store in paper bag with some white shavings that I use in my chicken coop and see what happens. Also a PNB Wa resident. Thank for your straight forward approach.

GREAT videos! My tip; after dividing the tubers, I sprinkle sulfur on the big cuts to help prevent rotting of the exposed tissue. So far so good!

Here in Germany I don't have experience with storing dahlias but will start this winter. But I have an easy method for storing yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) which is a relative of dahlias in the family of Asteraceae. After harvesting the storage roots I divide the rhizomes and plant them into pots with commercial compost without washing or watering. In spring I start watering and bring the potted plants to the greenhouse.

I live in Penna. and have clay soil. I learned from my aunt, who learned from her mother to dig up the dahlias leaving them in the clump of dirt. When i tried storing them with the dirt cleaned off (that was what the "experts" said to do), i lost many more than i saved. I do not do any dividing or cleanup of them till spring when the new growth is obvious. So your "lazy" method works best for me at least!

Hi from Utah! I live in a desert 🏜️ I have tried everything to store my dahlias over the winter for several years. and finally this winter I used the Saran wrap method. Halejuah! I have success. These are my babies and I am thrilled to have found a method that works. I don't love plastic waste but am grateful I get to keep my dahlias through the winter. Happy to have found you. Keep the videos coming

Thanks for sharing what method works well for you! I'm glad you're having success with the Saran wrap method. I just recently learned that the humidity here in the PNW gives us a significant advantage when storing dahlias, I had honestly never thought about that before. I guess your tubers are much more likely to dry out in storage, hence the Saran wrap? I'm always learning!

This year I started using shredded paper. I place my tubers in brown paper grocery bags and put the shredded paper all around them, stacking them in a way so they don't touch. Last year I did the plastic wrap method and that also worked fine. I store them in my front foyer and also an attic stairwell, both areas stay cool and dry.

Great video, especially for us PNW gardeners. Appreciate your straightforward approach and honest disclosure. I don’t dig up in winter, here in Forest Grove, Oregon unless I need to divide. Can you talk about how often to divide, just for flower production and plant health.

Hi! Thank you so much for saying this, you're very kind. I'm so glad my video was helpful for you! Yes, I recommend dividing about every third year. It's definitely not an exact science, but I have noticed that dahlias tend to grow closer and closer to the soil surface every year. For that reason I say every couple years is probably a good idea. Otherwise, more frequently just if you want to propagate/share more tubers! Please let me know if you have any additional questions, too.

Good video! Thank you. When I first started storing dahlias I just dug, cut stem like you do, then put in boxes in our downstairs rec room that is hardly ever heated, so probably that 45º range-ish. They did fine. Then I started reading and went to the brown paper bag, dust with Bonide Sulfur Plant Fungicide and a few shavings and stuff them in a cupboard hubby built with doors I can leave open in 40º weather and close and if needed a light bulb if freezing or below for long period of time. I think I got to crowding them too much or SOMETHING because the last 2 years I've had a lot of mildew (white fuzz) and more rot. At the end of this year's packing away, I'm trying wrapping in newspaper. I don't divide heavily because I want lots of blooms to sell at the driveway. (I seem to get less blooms with just one tuber per plant.) I'm in the PNW (WA) too.

Thank you for the video! I am from the PNW too, and your "lazy" method is interesting; I may try it someday heh. I am trying aspen chips (pet bedding) this year. Last year I used paper bags. This is my third year of growing a lot of dahlias too; on my first year I left them in the ground and about half of them came back up the following year.

I leave mine in the ground. I live in eastern Oregon where it gets pretty cold. I tried digging and storing them but that didn’t work for me. So I left them in the ground to die and to my surprise they survived. I still leave all of mine in the ground with mulch on top and they seem to be fine. I do need to dig them up and divide but don’t know when to do it or how. If you have any suggestions please let me know. I’ve had some in the ground for many years without dividing them. Thank you for your helpful video.

Oh I’m jealous. My basement stays about the same temp but it gets super dry as I’m in Minnesota instead of the PNW (where I imagine your humidity levels in winter are a lot higher). The Saran Wrap method works so well for me, but I’m hoping to expand my growing over the next couple of years so I can sell the tubers. I guess I should experiment with some less plastic-ful methods. Maybe even just reusing things like bread bags and other plastic film would work and then at least I wouldn’t be ADDING plastic. 🤔

I'm so glad you live in the PNW as well! It makes your advice so much more relevant to me than advice coming from southern climes, which is huge since I'm totally new to Dahlias. I do have a situation/question, though. It's being raining cats and dogs where I am and, my Dahlia is in a large planter, which has a drain hole but, if the roots are susceptible to rotting, should I cut it back and dig it out now, even though the stalk is still nice and green?

Hi Evelyn. It's Autumn in Australia and I have a large Dahlia in a small garden. It will look terrible if it stays there until it dies. Can I maybe prune it now, so 6 inches above ground and take it out for winter storage when most of the tops of it have died??? 😊

Thank you for sharing what you'd like to see next! I'm taking notes and now have this high on the list for an upcoming video. I mostly grow dahlias (and a few zinnias), but I do love to grow vegetables, too. In the future I hope to perhaps interview some local farmers who specialize in other plants..... Any particular plant or farmer requests? Sneak peak right now: my favorite dahlia varieties are 'Andrew Charles,' 'Sheer Heaven,' 'Alloway Candy,' 'Belle of Barmera,' 'Ferncliff Inspiration,' 'Giggles,' 'Dad's Favorite,' 'Penhill Watermelon,' and 'Valley Porcupine'.... I could go on forever 😂. Do you have any particular favorites?

Hi Eve, really appreciate your videos as I develop my dahlia growing skills. Your beautiful garden shows lots of dahlias growing very close together and I wonder whether you get problems with powdery mildew on the foliage, and if so what you do? My dahlias flower well tightly packed, but lots of the foliage needs to be removed as it is so unsightly so I am often left with blooms atop bare plants (eg Dahlia “Black Jack”). It’s all very well being told to allow sufficient air circulation, but that and close planting are mutually exclusive. All the best from the UK, Johnny

Hello! I'm glad my videos have been helpful for you. I have never had any trouble with powdery mildew and I don't know why, perhaps just luck. I wish I had some cool tricks to share, but all I know are the standard management recommendations. Besides the air circulation thing, I know that having strong, healthy plants in general can help (full sun, the right amount of soil nutrition, not too much or too little). Irrigating with soaker hoses or drip as opposed to sprinklers. Sadly, the weather is usually the deciding factor, though. Wish I had some better tricks to share! Please let me know if you figure out any hacks because I'm always trying to learn. hortsense.cahnrs.wsu.edu/Search/MainMenuWithFactSheet.aspx?CategoryId=12&ProblemId=4008

Can you please explain how they get mold and also shrivel at the same time? It's maddening when that happens. Also: Do you have a solution for the different sprout times and water needs/no water needs of tubers when planting them out? Like most people, I organize my dahlia beds by color and height, -- which is becoming problematic -- because some dahlia tubers are raring to go, while others are reluctant -- so when the excitable ones are shooting green above ground reaching for the sun, I often have a reluctant one next to it -- and this makes watering suddenly a bad situation, -- as I have rotted out the reluctant ones accidently -- even when handwatering each of the excitable dahlias (quite a chore) to avoid watering the tuber which hasn't sprouted yet. Super bummer when that happens, and it happens a lot, because they have such different sprouting temperaments.
