Over the past decade of recruiting and career coaching, I have enjoyed helping international students land internships and full-time opportunities in the US. I know it can be challenging, but the good news is this: you can absolutely land a position in the US for the duration of your OPT-status and very well can set up yourself for H1-B sponsorship success. In this video, I’ll break down the main obstacles for F1 Visa holders as well as outline exactly how to increase your odds of landing an opportunity.

After sending 1000+ applications , my experience is that HR ends up calling for interviews when they see we marked "No" for sponsorship on the online application but when they find out we are on a visa (anything other than a green card or being a us citizen) immediately goes negative. They are not willing to hear our story so they don't want someone who is going to be around for 1-3 years on opt because they argue that we will need a H1 sponsorship in future which is unacceptable for them. So unable to convince them that we don't require sponsorship now cause they are quite rigid regarding this. Hence, some of them explicitly mentioning in job description we need unlimited work authorization.

It is frustrating for sure. But keep your head up because there are a LOT of companies (global ones especially) that won't blink an eye.

This is literally happening to me right now. Got my dream job at dream company all that, made it to the final round, and HR found that I'm on OPT then rejected me. Im so tired

As an ex-apple employee from my home country currently in the US on F1 visa and having applied to numerous jobs, It is good to let the employer/recruiter/hiring manager know everything about your visa and work authorization through your resume before you get to the interview so they are aware. This will ensure that whatever job offers you get are not cancelled later and most companies who are actually looking for F1 OPT or CPT students can specifically prefer you because you mentioned that in your resume.

Hi Emily, Thanks profoundly for the tips in the video. I am an international MBA student who has just completed my first semester. I was fortunate through the help of my school to have a curriculum Practical Training (CPT) approval to work and led to me having an SSN.

Hey Emily, As an F-1 student one of the major difficulty we have is, when they mention "Indefinite U.S.work authorized" in the job discription or in the application they ask "will you now or in future require sponsorship?" as a yes or no question.
@CultivateYourCareer
@CultivateYourCareer 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aneesh! Great question. I would put 'no' because right now you don't need sponsorship and who is to say you need sponsorship in the future? There's a chance that another employer may recruit/poach you and offer you sponsorship. There's a chance you might decide to build your experience in another country. I'd have a candid discussion and elaborate on this once you're in the interview... but it will be, unfortunately, difficult to even have an interview if you mark Yes. I once had a candidate who was interviewing for paralegal roles and the hiring manager who loved this candidate asked if they were going to go to law school to be an attorney. This candidate answered yes. They ultimately didn't get the paralegal job because the hiring manager was worried about having to train and replace 9 months later. Well, the paralegal ended up getting another job and simultaneously didn't get accepted into any of her dream schools. She ended up also loving being a paralegal and realized she no longer wanted to go to law school anymore. Thought I'd share that perspective/analogy as we don't know what the future holds. There are so many things that can happen!

Thank you for this, I usually key in Yes for work sponsorship I literally cant count how many rejection letters I have received or interviews that wouldn't last 5mins just because the recruiter isn't familiar with what f1 OPT is.

Hi Emily, thank you for doing this video. I am in an MBA program and my school is not the most helpful in getting internationals hired. I was hoping to learn more about how can we stand out compares to other Americans. Also, how can convince companies to commit to a long term plan with us?

Hi Emily, I am on F1 visa doing an MBA program. Is it possible to apply a job in the bank on OPT? if I apply a job through student & graduate path, people say better have an internship first. However I found so many roles at the bank which only requires high school or bachelor degree, seems easier to apply. Could you please advise should I apply from now if I m going to finish my degree in May 2022? .

Hello, I’m a new subscriber! Do you have any tips on gaining employment with companies that can sponsor EB-3 visas?
@CultivateYourCareer
@CultivateYourCareer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing, Comfort! Congrats on EB-3 status. I'd check with the USCIS for the latest regulations and qualifications. But similarly, targeting global companies that aren't phased by immigration filing is one of the best strategies in these cases!

Hello Emily. Do you think it's a good idea to include the U.S. work eligibility without sponsorship part in the cover letter instead of the resume?

Hi ! Thank you for the video , very informative! Do you think that it’s possible that companies would want to hire someone just for one year ( the year without sponsorship). I always had the thought that companies would not want “waste” their time hiring someone just for one year and that later they would not want to sponsor that person 😕. Is that a real thing ? Thanks !!!
@CultivateYourCareer
@CultivateYourCareer 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are a lot of companies that hire employees seasonally, part-time, as an intern, or full-time with a hard stop. They say it as a win-win as you provide a service while also gaining experience. Trust that many of your peers and international students are getting opportunities, you can, too! We have a lot of international students in our programs that secure their next opportunity.

Hi Emily, I graduated with a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineer and I am having a job interview next week, which will take place 5 weeks before my last legal day staying in the USA. They don't know that I am under F-1 Visa yet. What is the best way to address these matters and when to do so without losing their interest in hiring me? Thank you!

You can still get a job without a STEM degree -- you just won't have the STEM extention. But I've had a lot of clients with international biz degrees or even English degrees land jobs related to their major.
