Hey y'all! Here are the tips and tricks to landing your DREAM INTERNSHIP in the entertainment industry. Whether it be a small production company, a local news station, or a Fortune 500 company, a lot of these tips still apply.

Stay positive! Get creative but most important stay sane. Look into free certificate courses, start a blog, make a portfolio, outline a business plan, connect with people on LinkedIn. But most importantly, knows okay to not do anything right now. Embrace the pace of the world. Whatever that looks like for you. Good luck!

Hi Onika! Your video is very informative! I am a freshman in college and in my first year looking to intern at HBO, MTV, Viacom etc to be in the film/documentary industry. However I have no experience in the fields on paper. The only thing I have to show is the content of my photography, high school record and maybe my first semester GPA. I want to get in touch with someone works at HBO or one these big media companies but I don’t even know where to start. I want to apply today but I don’t want my application to go into a blackhole because I don’t meet the criteria. If you have advice for me or could point me somewhere viable I could start I would appreciate it!

I probably applied to around 10-15 for the summer going into my junior year, if I remember correctly. The first summer after college I just worked at a salad/soup store. The first internship will always feel like the hardest to get, then it gets easier after that! Apply to whatever interests you or what you would like to learn more about. good luck!!

It’s honestly hard because I desire to get as much experience as possible, do you have any advice on applying for internships as a freshman in college? Or what were you doing as a freshman that helped set a foundation for where you are now?

I got a later start and had my first internship as a riding junior. Just due to most of the programs I was interested in being for that level in higher. Also due to location of my school. Get involved in extra curriculars for sure. I had part time admin campus job also. With office experience + extra curriculars in desires field, you will be a strong candidate even with no prior internship experience.

I would say don't focus on an exact major. Pick something you genuinely like and find a way to integrate into the company. Every company needs IT, Finance, Marketing, Business Affairs, etc. Even top media companies. However, a lot of people interested in creative departments sometimes go into film, journalism, communications etc.

my internships were paid! that varies company to company, industry to industry, and i'm sure even state to state. lots of people also do internships for college credit.
