In my experience, employers will ask for references after the first interview if they want them. I like to use my resume to showcase my skills and experience, but it’s up to you!

Hi, thanks for this video. I’m in a pretty weird situation and I was wondering what tips you have. I’m 17 and doing an early college program where I’ll have two years of college credits when I’m done with a high school, so I’ll be able to get my bachelors when I’m 19. I want to do a few internships, so I can figure what I actually want to do, so do you think I’d actually be able to get an actuarial internship at 17 or 18?

Hi Anthony! Congrats on all your hard work 🎉 Actuarial internships usually just require that you are enrolled in a college program and that you have passed at least one exam - so yes, it’s possible to get an actuarial internship even at 18!

Do you have any advice for someone who is currently studying for an exam, has graduated school for a few years now, and has had a couple of previous corporate finance/insurance jobs? Like is the exam the only thing keeping me from starting a career as an actuary and do I just skip the whole internship part of my job search and go straight to actuary jobs? Thanks in advance!

Hi Brian! Thank you for your question 🙂 I wouldn't say that you should just skip the whole internship part of the process - especially since you don't have any exams passed, I think it would be beneficial to have an actuarial internship. Who knows, maybe you won't even like working as an actuary! But, I do think experience in the insurance field is valuable experience, so do talk about those in your interviews. I think the best thing you can do right now is pass an exam. Hope this helps!

Hi Isabella! I am an Indian Economics undergrad student and have passed and appeared for two Actuarial exams from IFoA and pursuing for further exams. I’ve been searching for Summer’24 internships I’m the US. So, I’ve been doing most of the things you suggested. Would you suggest any particular things for remote opportunities due to my location? Thanks

Hi! Thanks for watching 😊 I don’t have experience with working internationally, but generally, companies will hire remote interns if they have a proven track record of working well on their own. So, if you’ve had previous internships (in-person or virtual), showcase the accountability you took in those roles. Hope that helps!

Hi So i wanted to ask what sort of coding do actuaries need? Is it python or other programming language ?

Hello! 👋 The most common ones that I’ve seen are: R Studio, Python, SQL, SAS, and VBA.

@@pragyanbasnet9187You definitely don’t need to know all of them. As long as you are fluent in at least one, you can usually transfer those skills into learning others on the job.

Any advice to help me land any actuarial position? I have passed 5 actuarial exams but have not been able to land any actuarial positions since I graduated.

Any coding experience, projects, etc? What types of roles are you applying for?

⁠I have been mainly applying for actuarial positions with occasional positions nearby that are similar. I have coding experience from school in R, Python, SQL, and Microsoft Excel. Also have projects and Case Study Competitions from school as well. Also graduated in June 2021 and have had many interviews but haven’t had enough good interviews in a row to land a position.

Hm, sounds like you’ve got a good amount of experience. I’d try asking the interviewers for feedback and see what they think you can do better at!

Maybe try doing some mock interviews for practice and get a mentor so they can give you some pointers. Otherwise, you could ktry applying for an actuarial internship instead of a full-time job.
