For anyone wanting to know if this works - two of us built a small patio 2 years ago in the garden using this method, we did it in an afternoon (no experience in paving whatsoever) in the U.K. and two years later it’s perfectly fine! We’re so pleased with it and the rustic look we are building another one this year

Great video. I used this method about 22 years ago. I read about this method in a masonry book, pre-KZfaq. The brick walkway held up well for 10-15 years, then it developed cracks and weeds started growing through the cracks. I am now researching methods to repoint the brick walkway. Here is what I have found and what I have decided to do. Seems like the most popular method, outside of just using sand, is to use polymeric sand. However several professional landscapers have KZfaq videos warning that the polymeric sand only last 3-5 years and will need to be redone, that is not acceptable to me. Several of the landscapers have gone to epoxy resin based grouts, such as Easy Joint or Romex Rompox Easy. There are lots of positive reviews for these epoxy resin products, very easy to apply and sets up hard. The problem is cost, to re-grout my small 115 sf brick walkway will cost over 1200 USD, just in product. Additionally the epoxy resin products can be difficult to obtain. The 3rd way to repoint is to mix cement and sand and manually put the wet mixture into the joint. While inexpensive, this is a lot more effort than I was hoping for, plus it requires more skill than other methods. Then I ran across this video, only I have found which demonstrates the method I used 22 years ago. I think one of the important steps is to keep applying the water until it is no longer absorbed by the dry cement. I don't recall doing that 22 years ago. While cleaning out the old joints I found some of the cement did not get wet to form a hard concrete. Maybe if I can get all the dry cement wet it will last longer than 10-15 years. The one thing I did differently from this video is I poured 6 inch concrete slab under the bricks, as a result the bricks have been very stable. I would think this important if you plan to drive a vehicle on the pavers. Thanks for the video, it was a good solution for me 22 years ago and after watching this video, think I will use the method again.

***** Agreed. Not weed so much but a bit of moss certainly adds character and charm to a paved area. But people see this as a "slipping hazard". I say "walk more carefully" :P
@maebelleish
@maebelleish 9 жыл бұрын
Then what is the point of doing it. I wanted to get rid of grass and weeds in a large area. I don't know about any of you, but I hate the area between the garden and the grass, so I put 3 widths of brick around the whole house front and backyard garden,plus the backyard garden area. I used that carpenters sand that is suppose to keep weeds at bay. I wish to hell I'd seen this video 20 years ago. Anyway, for the last 20 years it's taken me forever to weed wack, Pull weeds , you name it after I mow around the brick-it's caused me more work.in garden books they always suggest 3 layers of brick between garden and grass- this supposedly makes mowing easier [tires from one side lawn mower on brick] ,mow along without hassle of weed wacking and grass blowing back into yard. If I'd done it properly with cement instead of sand my life would be alot easier.

maebelleish clark just spray paving weeds. No point pulling them up as they spread their seed every time you do, making it worse. Just let them grow for a bit till most have leaves above ground, then spray on a good dry day when there's no rain forecast for a couple of days. Then when the weeds are brown and dead, either pull or just sweep them away, turning the broom upside down to snap them off.

Now this is the one! 😁👍🏾 VERY SIMPLE! & you’re correct… the hardest part will be getting those heavy bring. I was made an attempt. I wound up leaving everything right in that cart at homedepot and walked straight out the door! 😂 I’ll prepare for it next time.

Question: What types of cement would work for this? (by just poring water over it...) it seems like a great idea and I would really like to try it but I've been to the store and there are many different types of cement. I already have the bricks, just need the right type of cement.

What's the Mexican way and what's the American way?
@hamidsabir2296
@hamidsabir2296 4 жыл бұрын
@@BecomeInspired well from all the videos ive seen, the american way is to first dig down to a dept of 8 inches. Then bring in gravel and pour it all in. Then compact the whole thing. Then add a 3 inch layer of sand and then level the whole thing again. Then bring in the pavers. Assemble, line, make your cuts. Then compact again and finally add polymeric sand to fill in the gaps between the pavers. That's the american way. The mexican way is to add a little cement ontop of the soil and then simply place the pavers ontop 😆

I wonder how well this lasts. The bricks here rest on raw dirt. Was it compacted? What effect of freeze thaw cycles? Usually extensive prep of the bed with gravel and sand plus compacting is done first. I assume that is necessary if you want a lasting result. Another thing is that concrete powder resists wetting. When the water is sprayed over the crevices, it won’t wet very deep. A lot of dry powder will remain below the surface. It might be better to mix the concrete first and squeegee it, now thoroughly mixed, into the crevices.
