Nice grader, I only ever had tandem drive Champion and then later Volvo 740’s and I’d be spreading behind end dump truck and pups so the material was not as nicely laid out as the belly dumps leave. Our roads were all 7 pass and I’d windrow what the trucks left towards one side and then split the windrow and spread 1/2 of it out in two passes basically one just to each side of the crown. Then I’d go back and get the rest of the windrow and in three passes lay it out across the entire road width overtop of the first two passes I had already laid down. Usually you’d get a pretty nice basic shape that way with the majority of the material where you wanted it, but at that stage of the job the priority was just to get as much gravel laid down as possible while the trucks were there as money for new gravel was always tight. After the trucks had gone to their next project we’d have time go back over the road and do a finish blading to shape it right up and then calcium chloride would be applied for dust control. I run a newer John Deere 772GP 6WD occasionally now amongst the other equipment but don’t have any gravel roads to blade with it, I sure would have liked to have had it for spreading on dirt roads. I enjoy your videos, any day running grader is a good day to me.

I get the idea of a maintenance windrow, but it creates a secondary gutter and doesn’t allow water to shed off the road. With that said I’m gonna assume this is a fall blading and you aren’t expecting much more rain for the season

I leave a maintenance windrow from early spring till about the end of September and in all honesty the maintenance windrow never holds back much water there generally light enough water will wash right through not causing any problems.

I don't carry my aggregate that far to side you will have a tendency to loose it. I been building roads and rig sites for forty years . Everyone does it differently. We don't leave windows it catches water and runs down the sides. I always straddle it and then I can keep it in check.

When putting down new gravel, do you use gravel with a lot of fines so it compacts or pure rock. It’s about half and half for the country road where I live. Some just have a 4 inch lift of pea gravel that doesn’t have any fines mixed in with it, and some roads hardened up like concrete with the fines being mixed in with it. Do you have a preference? What is the benefit of using one vs the other? Ive just started running a blade and haven’t maintained a county road yet.
@graderman140m
@graderman140m 2 жыл бұрын
When I lay down new gravel I use 3/4 inch gravel with a plasticity ratting of 7 or 8 and that’s the fines what bind the gravel together it should be a 50/50 blend to much fines and not enough rock you have sloppy material if you have to much rock it stays lose and will washboard and be rough so very important to have the right mixture thanks for the question and thanks for watching!

Good day sir - question about your packer. A lot of guys running them up here in Saskatchewan always want to run them off a float circuit? It looks like you run yours of the ripper circuit which has not float. Can you think of why an operator would want the packer to float? Seems like having pressure on it would help with compaction no? I’d appreciate your thoughts, thanks!
@graderman140m
@graderman140m 2 жыл бұрын
Good day to you also and yes a lot of guys do have there packers set up with float I don’t have float on this grader because it wasn’t set up when it was made I have float on my other 140M3 with the packer I like the float for when I get in my hilly area just kick it in float that way your tandems always have weight on them now with this setup I have to manually adjust it not a huge deal just something you have to be mindful of hopefully that explains why lot of guys want float.

Man i wish we had nice material to work with like that all I get to work with is shale. I had a little freak out at work the other day I was off for a week and they up a guy on one of my roads and he leave enough material on the road and was left with a large wind row so instead of bringing it back across the road again he decided to push it in to the ditch and brush the supervisor asked me if there is anything I could do told him to get me a excavator and a few trucks and reditch the roads he didn't like to hear that.

why do you roll your blade out on your final pass?

The reason I roll my moldboard ahead when I finish is because I want the smooth finish plus I like being able to see whole cutting edge I explain it like trying to butter a slice of bread you don’t lay your knife straight up and down you put it ahead to smooth it on hope that explains why I do that thanks for watching

@@graderman140m it looks like it lays down nicely. I live in a small town in Oklahoma and although there’s several limestone quarries around the little quarry where I live has the highest quality of limestone in the area so we’re fortunate there. Thanks for the video. I haven’t got to spend any real time on a motor grader despite logging countless hours grading on dozers and excavators so it’s nice to see some grader action. Hopefully one day I’ll get some seat time in one because I really prefer the more technical finish stuff over the balls to the walls excavating, etc.
