Layering is one of the most important techniques when it comes to creating realism in your coloured pencil drawings.
In this video, I discuss my thoughts on the technique and show you how I approach layering.
Enjoy!

Just found you today. This is my second video that I have watched. It’s interesting, I do adult coloring only for me it really is about realistic/realism - as closely as I can get it. The longer I do this, the more I find myself gravitating toward actual artists KZfaq channels to gain even more experience. Conversations through the 5 years that I have been doing this, about layering has taken on many different view points. MOST colorists have zero interest in layering or very little it seems. Seems like if they have to do 5 layers that is too much. MOST of the images I do have 10-15, although some have had 20, 25+. MOST people’s attitude seems like is, “It’s just coloring, you don’t need that many layers!” My reply is, “It depends on what your ultimate goal is. If you want your image to truly look realistic, the more layers you can get, the more it will look that way.” Others don’t get it until I deliberately show them two different images, one where I didn’t have a lot of time to do it, so the fence in the image has only like 5/6 layers. The other is an image of an apple orchard with apple barrels and the barrels have over 25 layers. The visual comparison of the two images, for some individuals is all it takes for them to go, “OH, now I see!” Some, after that will start striving for more layers, others will admit that they can see the difference, but just don’t have the patience to do it. I am now at a point where I am adding in my own elements to images if there is enough white negative space around the image to do so. So, I guess ultimately, maybe what I am doing is slowly building up enough experience to be able to do my own images…I know I have a long way to go to get there, but it’s not a race to get there, so I am going to just enjoy the journey…along with getting pointers from actual artists! You have a new subscriber! ☺️

Ithink I've never really tried coloured pencils in my life. Like the real thing, if I may say, because I feel it is very difficult. Also, these pencils are very expensive where I live and I am not so good at art right now. I admire people like you in all ways, such talent and who have a way of explaining and teaching others how to better their work. Admirable. Much respect.

⭐️Cathy Carbonneau ..you can it takes a "mental adjustment " as your brain is your 3rd eye..learn to teach yourself to consciously observe anything around and think of light & shadow basically.. tones and value the light source etc. YOU ARE MAKING 3 DIMENSIONS INTO 2 No video can do that for you . Learn HOW to OBSERVE, visually. Paolo

Thank you for another informative video :) Curious to know which colours you have used for the darker shadows? And also I know people use drafting film for demo purposes, but as this one is for a client how does that work? Presume they don't frame it on the film, so do you get a print done instead? Thanks x

🌟 Bonny Snowdone Academy Do you ever use blending mediums or purchase some blending sticks . I have used "baby oil" no offensive odor and doesn't leave paper wrinkled. It looks so tedious as your video was about 1-2½ inches of area. The horse bridle was amazingly realistic as previous work on horseseye and mane , I didn't understand the points Inthe video lesson

No I don't, I just use a cotton bud 🥰 I don't find it tedious because my drawings take a long time, they're not a quick process but I really enjoy my time drawing

Fantastic! I'd love to try this technique on portraits. I draw a lot with pencils and can do pretty good with shading but to bring them alive with color would be so much more fun. Do you have any portajt tutorials? I'm not as good with animals😏

Some helpful advice to Bonny, try to speak without using um, it sounds like you are lost. Make a lesson plan and stick to it. There was about 5 to 6 minutes of babble and 3-4 minutes of useful information. This first time I watched this video, you lost me after 3 minutes.
