I am not a licensed plumber...so I probably over do everything. Here I show you how to over do pipe threads with Teflon tape and pipe compound.

I watched licensed plumbers for 50 years and I’ve never seen one do the dope first. Yes, the tape and then dope but never the way this do it yourself’er is doing it.

Gonna try this method out, this is the one I haven’t tried yet. Looks bulletproof! 🤙🏽

I'm in the middle of a DIY shower install and the chance of a valve leak is giving me anxiety. when I first put it all together it SEEMED leak free but a tiny drop of water appeared after 2 days of being under pressure. so I took it apart, re-taped it, and now it's been under pressure for another 2 days and again seems leak free. but after last time I don't know how to be SURE it's not going to leak. and soon it has to go behind a permanent shower wall...

Probably don’t want to put dope in the female threads. As you screw in the male side, it will clump and push that into the inside of the fitting. When water comes through the system, it can take those clumps of dope and clog open aerators and other components of the plumbing system. Just a thought!

Good point. I wish I would have mentioned that I put a very thin layer and don't put gobs in there. Same on the layer outside of the tape. Just a thin coat to lubricate the tape.

You should take the aerator out before doing your first flow test anyway. Chances are there's going to be debris in the line regardless.

Hey there is reason people don’t do this. The tape is worthless in this situation. Also you are not supposed to put pipe dope into the fitting as it pushes dope into the pipe system. It is put on the threads because as you thread it any excessive tape or dope is pushed out. I am begging you don’t do this as the excess dope will be pushed downstream and damage valves, faucets shower valves backflow devices you name it. I have to deal with this enough at job sites and teaching apprentices not to do this as the service tech. Info you want some extra insurance against leaks use a soft set pipe dope like True Blu from rectorseal.

I have a 1 inch cold water supply line attaching to the well casing Male pvc to female metal I didnt tighten it quite enough and I have a small pinhole air leak where the threads meet the metal. I cant tighten it because everything else is glued. What can I do without taking everything apart?

You forget an important step. Always rough up the threads, so the tape is not moving on you. In your situation, you could’ve put a plug on the coupler. Those are available with O-rings, and are easy to fit/remove. Or use a dummy, so you always leave the correct space available for the next step. Dummy’s are perfect, they can stand a beating and dirt, and are very cheap.

Strange way of doing it with paste before tape but if it works...!!! I only use lock tite 55 string these days much better than tape Imo... 👍
