In this new series we'll be using Duolingo to learn Indonesian from scratch live. But with a twist: we'll be taking a linguist's approach, analysing the forms that are shown to us, making hypotheses, and building up a model of the grammar of the language. We'll probably also get demolished by the owl. Sound like fun? Let's go.

Reminds me of the oxford university classics language assessment test. As part of it, you're given a set of sentences with translations in a conlang and have to infer the structures to translate other sentences.

That's fantastic! And it reminds me as well as the Linguistics Olympiad (probable subject of a future series too)

Indonesia was a Dutch colony, and Indonesian got a lot of loanwords from Dutch. Similarly, Malaysia was a British colony and thus Malaysian loaned words from English. Both are mutually intelligible for the most part (so Indonesians and Malaysians can understand eachother without much issue, provided both are talking in the standard varieties of their respective languages), though some words have quite different meanings.

I challenge you to say the Indonesian tongue twister : "Sempat-sempatnya semut-semut itu saling senyum-senyum dan salam-salaman sama semut-semut yang mau senyum-senyum dan salam-salaman sama semut-semut itu."

Wanted to watch a movie but I found your video instead 😂 and you must be very confused about the "punya" and "memiliki" situation there. Well, they are synonyms basically and interchangeable so don't worry too much. Both mean "have/has".

I see the checkmark on the Irish course and I feel obliged to say that the Irish Duolingo course has been panned by quite a few native Irish speakers.

Don't worry, I learned my Irish at university (so so rusty now though) - I was just snooping around with the Irish Duolingo course
