I know the feeling. But I would tell you to choose front end or back end.. don't do full stack. Once you master front or back end then go full.

For those who are struggling to learn Javascript, like I did for many months, this is what made me learn: Start practicing from the very beggining. Even if it's just copying a few lines of code that you see in each lesson. Much more effective than just taking notes. I know this because I tried everything and the only way I could learn (and retain what I learned) was when I started doing that. Once a friend suggested me a few books with interactive content, that made me practice what I learned at each chapter. Edit: For those asking about the books I mentioned, these are the best ones: "Javascript In Less than 50 Pages" "Head First Javascript Programming" If you are into learning Python, I love "Smarter Way to Learn Python".

I don’t know why everyone always glosses over how difficult chaining methods can be… or the mental model you need to have to know when to dig down into other objects or constructs by chaining multiple functions together. Almost every single tutorial I’ve seen just assumes this is a given that someone understands and glosses right over it.

The plateaus are real. You hit a wall and feel like you'll never get past it. But then the solutions come to you and the feeling of triumph is amazing. It makes your day. One of the best (and worst) parts of writing software.

Those are all normal fears. For now enjoy the learning process...when the next stages come you'll be better prepared if you do a solid job with the "basics".

Just take your time with it. Confidence will come as you know you can do more, and have done so previously. Try to push yourself to be forced to think and strangle with the problems, before jumping to tutorials. Fear isnt irrational, most of the times.

Didn't get a job yet and stopped coding for the last 3 months since I had to move back to my parents' place but I will be moving back to my place in the next week and hope to continue coding and maybe get a job :)

This is great advice for how to learn, just in general. I am a self-employed electrical / mechanical engineer and the learning never stops. I need to take a more formalized approach to upping my Python skills, and want to learn Javascript too. So I'm going to take some of your advice. Great job!

I've learned HTML, CSS/Tailwind(kinda not fully), JS, and now moving on to React. I say "learned" for me is more like I no longer rely on tutorials. If I'm confused I now use the internet or documentations.

great video. thanks for breaking down the steps. I saw you had two monitors and a laptop, what do you tend to have up on the laptop(assuming the first one is the programming IDE and second one is for research)?

Totally depends on what I'm doing. If I'm working on a website I'll have the code on one monitor, the actual site on the other monitor (and another browser for research). The laptop monitor will then be for anything else...sometimes I'll have a database GUI open. Sometimes I'll have both monitors completely filled with a code editor...usually that's when I'm working on something for a backend (or something that doesn't have a user interface).

On the downside, because it is an interpreted language, it can be slower than compiled languages, and its lack of strict typing can lead to errors. However, these disadvantages can be overcome by optimizing the code through various techniques and utilizing extensions like Typescript.

I’ve learnt music by ear. I’m a self taught in many things , i learnt HTLM back in 98 and made my first website. I did courses in 2016 - 2020 and still can’t get with JS completely as they are so many things to understand and it’s like math to me. Yet I need to understand it for the sake of it so I take any advice i found

What do you recommend choosing: 1.JS(TS)+Reactjs+Nodejs+ReactNative, 2. Java+Spring, 3.C#+.Net I took courses and studied JS+React. But there are not enough vacancies in my city. Also, I don’t really like the variety of frameworks; every time something new appears (nextjs, nextjs, etc.)

Can you make a video of when to use what datatypes and structures? I am struggling to grasp when to make a class/factory or other types vs just an array/map/set or just a simple object. Most of the time I just make a class with methods to change and pass the data inbetween classes. But looking back it feels not being the best the code could be. Unfortunately I only find videos on how to code better but no video that adresses that topic:/

I don’t agree with choosing a single learning resource. Each instructor explains concepts and code in different ways, and show different scenarios, some that will probably hit home with you. I have been learning from a couple instructors that really explain things well.

This channel is so high quality that you can actually feel that its made of full grain leather, with that Tom Ford Ombre Leather fragrance on it. Not to mention that there are minimalist stylistic pieces of sterling silver embedded into the Leather to create more character. Jokes aside. This channel is really great tho! 😆

I don’t see enough comments that mention The Odin Project. That’s what I’m taking and I feel it’s turning me into a well rounded developer. I’m working my way through JavaScript right now and it’s definitely difficult but I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Truly speaking, I have taken the full-stack course and learned Java as my first-ever programming language. I haven't faced any difficulty, and it took me three months to complete. Then, I was introduced to HTML and CSS for about 20 days. Now, I'm working on JavaScript. In this entire process, there is no issue with the JavaScript and Java. The only thing I've really messed-up with CSS. I still can't understand the hundreds of properties. How can I deal with CSS?

So... Can I just jump into JS? I started doing basic research and EVERYTHING pairs JS with HTML and CSS. I don't know those. I'm literally starting from nothing. I watched some of these videos and he's really pushing JS as a good beginner language. That's great - what's the deal with these other 2? I get that one is the bones of a website and the other is the graphics. Can I do anything with JS without knowing those 2?

HTML AND CSS was easy for me to grasp. JavaScript - most programmers are saying that it isn't easy at all. I am anxious, I feel lost. Watching this video sure helped. Shifting my career from teaching English and being a writer to tech is completely new. But with great geniuses like you Andy, tech workshops, etc I think I can do it. And maybe I cannot, I guess we'll find out. CSS theory through Codecademy was complex, and long but I figured it out (self-taught). "Enjoy the process and learn 15 hours a week." Wish me luck!

Because many courses are very expensive and incomprehensible and not useful. Please recommend some great textbooks on learning JavaScript. To start from them and self-taught and from zero level. The best advise in youtube about how to learn programming, when i started to learn i learnt the basics of html, css, javascript, python, java ,c , c++, by books, youtube videos,udemy,freecodecamp, udacity, codecademy and other tutorials so i learnt a lot of theorie how to program but i had a really hard time building a basic program or project, then i followed your advice about building projects and i started to connect all the dots of all the knowledge i got from the videos and now i dont feel so lost in programming and problem solving using documentation, now im learning about big o notation, algorithms and data structures for the interviews, thank you for your great advices.

I been using chatgpt to get basic frameworks for my simple applications. and to learn fundamentals. I am now weary of learning to program at this point. Are we going to become the typewriter repair men. History will repeat itself possibly?

I tend to disagree about the just one ressource. Quite the opposite it is better to have several ressources and repeat one thing but with slightly different version of it. Then when your brain starts finding redundancis and you see that it is the same thing then that means your brain has started to conceptualize it. And that is a process that takes time and effort. Again the idea is that when you revisit one and same thing again you reinforce long term memorization. And that is not what you want to reinforce with programming. You want to reinforce conceptualization. And that means when you go to a different course to revisit a concept that reinforces your conceptualization and understanding and you try to predict what is next. Also when you work on a problem and revisit some material that also reinforces conceptualization.

What do you think about some people's opinion that it is not recommended to start learning and working with React or other frameworks before mastering Vanilla JavaScipt and are the skills required for building simple projects like Todo App, Rock Paper Scissors App etc. enough to start with React? @@Savedandfreed I’m in enrolled in the course through Coursera. It’s a great course but it’s not enough to make you into a front end engineer. In other words, the front end program on Coursera offered by Meta shouldn’t be your only resource. Also look on Udemy, free code camp, w3schools and the Odin project to continue to mature your skills as a developer.

It migh be a good bootcamp i like colt steele web development bootcamp at udemy , learn the solid fundamentals and git/github, then some react from the react documentation at google, then make projects and a portfolio with resume and cv and practice coding challenges (codewars or hackerrank or leetcode), then study for the intervies big o , algorithms and data structures, but most important the chiken to the rice and chiken is problem solving and building projects.

One thing I've learned as well regardless of subject is that when you stumble onto some tribal wisdom that says don't do X, make doing X a learning project. And while success is not guaranteed it is a good way to discover the gotchas of any field of study.

@@AndySterkowitz I was a career electronics troubleshooter ((which pretty much means that if it had a wire in it I ended up having to learn that crap)) But one thing that I found out once I hit supervision side was that you need to get your people exposed to the gotchas early on in their career and preferably when times are good.
