OMG, this video came up just as I was having the same issues with my 14 month old GSD that I got from a rescue 2.5 weeks ago. No impulse control. No idea of boundaries. Stubborn as you know what. We put a prong collar on her to help her walk better. She won’t come when called. Everything is a game to her. She know commands but will do them in her own time. Tell her down and point and wait about 5-10 secs and don’t move, then she will lie down. I’ve had 6 GSDs in my lifetime. Never have I had one like this. Plus she is not confident!!! Thanks for this video

@@eunice8116 you are looking to lower the body temperature after it’s raised too high. Hosing your dog down should work unless they are on the brink of dyeing of dehydration 😵‍💫 and are in need if fluids. Also keeping a little pink bucket of ice water for them to drink through the day works too 🙃

Hey Tom! I was re-watching this video today. I just love your videos so much. I wonder if you have any tips for my GSD who is doing well heeling with the prong, however if I hand off the leash to my daughter and try to walk away, or anyone in my family is walking far ahead or behind him, he screams his face off. If we stay together he's fine. If I myself distract him and lead him away he is fine. I'm trying to train my daughter to walk him. He's 2 years old and he seems to have separation anxiety. Any tips to work through this with him?

I have a 5 month old 3/4 Shepherd 1/4 boxer, he’s absolutely great on walks especially off leash, but there are days on leash where he jolts towards dogs or people (very friendly manner) to try play / interact with them he stops when I move like 5-10ft away from them, but I think in future if he keeps at it I may have to try the prong as already at 5 months he’s quite the strong wee fellow thanks for the video great as always.

Many years ago, I was training military police dogs. There was a particular dog that's once off the lead would only recall when he wanted to, I came up with an idea. We got hold of an old heavy frying pan, put string through the handle to form a loop. We then positioned it next to the range of kennels and set it up like a mouse trap. We would do some basic commands then Break. This dog Always went round the exercise area anti click wise and passed right by the frying pan. Immediately the dog got level with the pan the handler called the dogs name and Come. Immediately the dog did not obey the long line of cord was pulled and the pan really clattered against the steel fence, as the pan hit the fence another quick come was demanded and it completely solved the recall problem. He would recall on a long line but not when off a lead or collar. This was many years befor the state of the art electric collars. He was a 140 lbs huge GSD, VERY TALL AND LONG with a long coat, think he was half grizzley bear. Lol

@livingadamman7994
@livingadamman7994 4 жыл бұрын
@@kylasbibi wow, so it's not only me, but it's good to know. I guess it's a test for us to help them overcome their fear and at the same time I suppose we need to deal with our own confidence and emotions as dog owners. Perhaps we sometimes expect too much from our pets but not of ourselves?, at least that's what I'm learning. I'm determined to get the behavior of her sorted, and she has come a long way, the problem really lies in the breeding I believe as all traits are, a dog can not be trained to express a trait it does not have genetically only traits can be suppressed and controlled through training. To be fair we need to give them ample respect and praise for their many amazing traits and do our best to deal with the ones that are not appropriate as companion/working dogs or whatever the purpose for the dog. And deal with the less desirable behavior with consistent training and love. Mine has taken to the stick like crazy and now she keeps putting her stick exactly where she knows i walk and it's starting to drive me crazy when I'm busy with other things, when I'm not busy it's great fun and good exercise for her and she's shows she has excellent scent instincts with fetching the stick hidden in bush and tall grass. Also you can use the stick as a reward after leash training, or before you throw stick you can ask commands as they are so anxious for you to throw it it will get them to perform. a downside is that she gets locked focus on the stick, so some days I hide it. Good luck with yours
@kylasbibi
@kylasbibi 4 жыл бұрын
All4JesusChrist It’s good not to feel alone. I think you are right on so many levels. I am really going to have to just breathe a little more. I’m afraid she is the result of poor breeding plus she was just too much for the people who had her. She is 71.6lbs, very strong and stubborn as the day is long. I also think part of the problem may be I wasn’t ready to bring another dog into our home. Our 12.5 yr old GSD crossed the rainbow bridge in August. It had been so eerily quiet here without her. I went to a rescue instead of a breeder. When we got Bella home, it was Katie bar the door. We have managed to calm her dow some using a tether so she can’t just wander. We switched her to a better food. We had her evaluated for training and she starts the intermediate class in a couple of weeks. It’s that stubbornness that drives me insane. She know her commands but will take her own sweet time doing them. But she is worth trying to train so here I am!
@livingadamman7994
@livingadamman7994 4 жыл бұрын
@@kylasbibi Excellent story, I'm no expert but I believe you will meet your goals with her as I will and am slowly. I just spoke to the breeder since your message and he says she is testing me a bit but she's 1 yr and he says all that will balance out, he's very happy at how she is coming along he said I'm doing a great job, thing is I know I can do better so when you look at it like that she is also training me :) amazing dogs aren't they, so quick and wise, strong and yep dominant ! Hey this may not be your cup of tea but I pray to Jesus to help my dog understand me and to make her good, and I believe it has made a huge difference. God Bless

2 questions: I’ve used both the classic Sprenger prong collar and more recently a plastic prong collar; are either of them acceptable and do the same thing or is one better than the other? When you’re starting out teaching heel, do you have him heel all the time even just going out to the bathroom and so on? Like constant training or am I supposed to “give him a break” but then he’ll just be pulling. I always hear about short chunks of time training is best, but is heeling different? Thank you!! My fearful beagle pit mix needs some guidance!
