Tainan Dalpra, Gui Mendes, and Cole Abate along with other notable Art of Jiu Jitsu athletes teamed up for a seminar in Nagoya Japan on July 8th, 2023 after the IBJJF Asian Championship to demonstrate several of their coveted passing techniques. Here, Gui demonstrates a leg drag sequence with a few key details to make it effective against high-level opponents.

When he grabs the thigh, why does he hip switch and then posture back up onto his knees, when he’s at that position already

I had the same question. I *think* it’s to dive really low/fast to beat the leg with the head, and then get the knee between the legs.

You can't leg drag properly when lying down like the first position of the thigh grab, getting to knees and most importantly his toes is enables him to actually move past the legs, up to the hips and eventually side control.
