I have been playing with big tires for years and have NEVER seen anyone do the flip onto the knees move - That solves the "I can lift it but can't get the mass close enough to my body / may destroy lower back" problem instantly. . it's a little awkward right at the start - bend knees a LOT ! . . I just tried it with a 38" / 110LB combo . . . . IT WORKS ! . . . Awesome ! . . . New trick learned - THANKS ! ! !

As we get older, we SHOULD be working smarter vs. harder. I know I (at 74) try to, meaning I try to use the Laws of Physics in practical application (vs. reading about them in a school textbook)! ;-) And of course, that applies to my Jeep when rotating its factory/OEM 33" Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires. I don't rotate the spare though (it's underneath the bed on my Gladiator JT, unlike a Wrangler's located on the door), just the 4 road tires. And I take it slow and careful: Safety first, no need to be in a hurry. -- BR

Been lifting tires out in the dirt at my Country Home for years. I have used all the tricks except for tire iron and handle off of the Jack. I have to say when you’re alone and changing a tire, redundancy with safety measures is never wrong. Several jackstands and a good lift Jack are always welcome. I don’t trust the scissors jacks with my trucks they have twisted and fallen too many times.Thanks for the thoughtful video

It's my understanding that KZfaq (in this New Age 'Sickciety' in which we have evolved into) has stopped you and I from seeing 'thumbs down' now, otherwise it gives us ideas, for when we see a thumbs down we follow suit and give a thumbs down also, and that's supposed to crush the soul of the person who made the video, and makes them feel bad and we can't have a world full of 'heart broken' people! Not that this particular video is worthy of a thumbs down, in fact it's worthy of a thumbs up in my opinion. If, as a viewer, you go to watch a video that has 2 likes and over 100 thumbs down, then that can be a sure sign that the video's not worth watching... that (like so many other good things we once had) is now taken away from us!

Thanks for the tips. I’m not a very big guy so this helps. It seems like every time I get a flat tire the weather is very bad. One time it was -29 2am in the morning coming back from the hospital and I got a flat. I went go remove the tire from the jeep and I cut my finger right open on the steel wire in side the tire. It was so cold out that I never even felt it until I got inside the jeep to warm up. Talk about blood running down my hand though while changing the tire lol.

Fantastic, never seen anyone demonstrate that before! Very useful techniques for anyone who struggles to lift any tyre, which is quite a lot of people. One extra thing I do in sand if needed is dig under where the new tyre will go, that allows you to precisely level the wheel with the studs, and saves jacking the car up further which can destabilise it. Really liked the advice to chock all 3 wheels, some cars unlock centre couplings at rest so will actually roll away if not all wheels are chocked.

Great video, you've given me some ideas. My Jeep tires are 33's, and I totally agree with one of the other commenters that unless larger tires are REALLY needed for some reason, don't. I'm not as big (or strong) as you, but you've given me ideas on using the "leg lift" on my 33's to get them up on the rear rack. Fortunately I've only lifted my Jeep 2", so it's not sky-high. Thank you for taking your time to make this!

I really don't like my body under the truck when working on it.

I've used similar ways. At home I have "sit down" creeper that I use. Like you say, about one or two inches clearance between the tire bottom and floor. With my lower arms on my legs and my hands holding the rim spokes, I raise the back of my feet up which puts the tire in position to go on the lugs. Thank you for this video.

The only ideas I would add is to jack it up ONLY enough that the tire barely touches the ground to make removal less heavy on the human body (muscles, back, etc.). Another trick is to spin the tire prior to removal so one lug bolt is exactly straight up center. With your eye-chrometer you can see an imaginary line from the top lug bolt to the axle center. This makes finding/aligning the lug holes on the rim with the lug bolts on the axle much easier. The spare tire will likely be taller because it is fully inflated so you will need raise the vehicle a bit more. In fact, with a screw jack/bottle jack you can lift the vehicle to line up with the rim so you do not even have to lift the wheel. If you use a tire iron to lift the tire it should be lined up with the top centered lug bolt and center of the axle (straight up/down line). Like three dots all lined up. This is a good video for big city folks who do not know how to change a tire. I'm grateful I'm a country boy, we gitter done...

I normally squat in front of the tyre, put fingers through the rim or on outside of tyre, forarms on knees and lift with feet and rock the arms to get the tyre where it needs to be. As you say, lining up is crucial.

I swapped 2 snow wheels, 225/75R 16, for summer wheels on my 1998 E250 van recently. At 67, I see the need to lose weight and stretch everything like I used to. I loaded boxcars with 140 lb bags of flour by catching them on my shoulder and walking with it to one side of the boxcar, 1000 bags a day, when I was young. I also took 4 years of Judo, so I was pretty strong, and still am.

I was talking to a friend today about changing heavy tires and he told me about his two lever method. It seems to be the most efficient because if the holes on the wheels aren’t aligned with the studs you can work the levers to move the wheel forward or backwards. I need to get him to post a video to You tube.

You're quite a tough woman, I'm very impressed. Thumbs up to you! All of the women that have ever worked in our shop purposely avoid working with tires, because they are just too dang heavy. I would be curious to know where you got the 85 lb measurement from. Are you including both the rim and the tire? It seems to me that many of those big Jeep tires with the custom steel rims are considerably heavier.

You can also use your foot! If you have boots on (or even just shoes, imo) you can put your foot in line with the hub, then roll the tire on top of your boot to get a little extra height. Then, just like lifting w/ your feet, you can use your foot to maneuver the tire where you need it. Also works with one of them flat rocks if you don't want to use your foot, if you can find one the right height

I am 6 ft 1 male with above average strength from an East Asian point of view and perhaps average or lower than average strength from an American standard. I have a 2011 F150 4x4 Lariat 3.5L ecoboost. For me, lifting the tire itself by my sheer strength is not hard, when the truck is jacked up for me to replace the rear shock. What’s hard is doing that while trying to match the lug nut holes with the wheel bearing sticks. At that moment, my back was in a bent position. If I want to use strength fully, I end up hitting the truck body above the wheel. If not, I would have to half squat to try to match the lug nut holes with the wheel bearing sticks. It took me quite a while to do it. It was not the strength requirement itself. It was awkwardness of applying your strength with precision. A short strong person would have an easier time doing the same task.

@jeepschool
@jeepschool Жыл бұрын
The best way to change a tire is with a bottle jack or scissor jack--something that fits under the axle. A Hi-lift is great for lifting the body OR lifting the wheel, by the wheel itself (so you wouldn't be taking the wheel off because the Hi-lift is hooked to it). Not saying a tire change can't be done with a Hi-lift, just not the ideal tool for the job. On most off-highway capable rigs, when you lift the body, the flexible suspension allows the wheel to droop a long ways before it will leave the ground. How did you plan to change a tire with a Hi-lift?
@SeriousSchitt
@SeriousSchitt Жыл бұрын
@@jeepschool Thanks for your reply. I was out hunting once and developed a flat tire, middle of winter, just on dark. I rather 'carelessly' never checked my jacking capability since I went from a 30" tire to a 35", and when I set about trying to lift the vehicle I was horrified to learn that all the jack's 'travel' capacity was used up in the 150 - 200mm worth of flat tire! Through a series of improvising (using the 4 bags of tire chains stacked on each other, that I had on the back well of the truck, and a spade that I carried) and some share luck, I was able to accomplish the job, albeit about 3 or so hours in doing so. I figured that, there has to be a better way... Enter the Hilift Jack! After watching these two videos (after I'd watched yours and a ton of others on KZfaq) I'm now more than convinced I can do the job if needed, safely on the track, using a Hilift Jack. When my jack arrives I intend to set out and make specific jack points for it around the vehicle and, this time, make sure I'm comfortable with the way it works in the confines of my workshop before I set out on another offroad expedition. The second video shows the stropping of the wheel to the chassis, which should help make the process even easier and safer. Thanks. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbR4hbhqlrCbn4k.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bruEatdprL-uZGw.html

you can do it, but it’s much harder to lift a tire high up and get it on the wheel studs. if you only lift the vehicle an inch or. 2 off the ground, you barely have to move the wheel to get it seated on the studs.

From what I can see, the majority of Jeep owners that come into our shop for new tires have absolutely no practical reason for buying oversized tires. They do it exclusively to make their Jeep look macho. Watching your video (showing the extreme difficulty of mounting big tires w/o special equipment), I can think of no better reason NOT to buy oversized tires unless you really need them for off-road use. Not only do oversized tires make it hard to routinely rotate, or change a flat, but they cost a lot too (i.e. $350/each, sometimes more).
