very cool. For a green screen of say 8x8 how many of these lights would i need? Also what would you recommend for Green Screen material.

@@raulviteri6079 You should check out the link for the Glide Gear green screen unit in the description and the video. Love it. It's 8x8. And, depends if you want to light the WHOLE thing of you're going to come in closer. For the whole thing, you'd need 4 footers x4, but I don't think you'd be lighting the edges, so probably the 4x 3 footers would do you.

@@misiek7676 That just a simple soft light up and back at 45 degrees. Set up yours however you want, then LOOK at it with ONLY the backlight on.

Thanks! They're pretty cool, but I think you'd have to be doing this a lot to justify the price. They aren't cheap, but they are quite robust and cheaper than what I've seen out there. 👍

Great video! I am about to have a first customer for an image film so my greenscreen needs to get to the next level - This video convinced me to get those lights instantly. Problem is - I cannot buy them in Germany it seems. I hope I find something comparable, this looks just awesome!

OMG... The moment when you took of your glasses, I was... What... This is Tony Stark! Now we can have another Iron Man movie! Now on the subject. Thanks for the great video. I am planning to do something similar, but with RGB LED (DIY... I am a begginer, so I need to be on a budget :D ) stripes and remote controler, so I can choose any color I want and high frequency LED dimmers, so I can avoid flickering at any (or almost any) shutter speed. Two for the green screen and two or mayby three for the subject. I hope it will work :D

Hi Kevin - Thanks for this. I have been thinking about using theatre LED Cyclorama Lights for 4m wide green screen positioned top & bottom to hopefully get an even spread: I have a project for a chat studio that has a host with 2-3 guests (3-4 talent) and am concerned about the talent lighting spill & pulling a key. Any thoughts?

Yeah. This whole band floor thing is not easy, and you'll really have to play with the light, spill and so much. I'd almost rather shoot each person individually and key them into a full shot later.

If you setup the set so you can shoot each member separately (smaller set, they're probably playing to pre-recorded tracks anyway), you can then place them in whatever environment you want, in any position you want, as long as the lighting matched what you're using for a background. It's just another method of doing it. No matter what you end up doing, test the hell out of it - it sucks to spend a ton of time doing this and finding out something didn't work out. :)

Thanks! Yes, expensive, but not really for comparables. If someone does a LOT fo green screen work, it's worth it. If not, other solutions would be better if money is the issue.

Great post, thank you On exposure, since we are just using green light Should we look at the Green on an RGB parade, and set at say 50-60 IRE? Or lower due to saturation issues I know most cameras are better with Green color than any others Thanks

That would certainly work. The always thing to concentrate on is setting the camera as you would for the talent, separate lighting, and the green screen separate lighting. Hot spots, RGB parades (green channel) and all those tools are great addition and should be used. But first, set it all up, test it, do a key, adjust as necessary and try and get as close to a decent key without a lot fo trouble. If trouble, then dive into the tools.

I have this same setup in our studio with green Kino lights, though the downside is it won't work for full body green screen, as the difference between the green behind you and the white light for your feet don't match up around your ankles area. :-( But it DOES help with waist up shots for sure!

Yep. This is definitely not the way (or price range) or doing large full shots. Wouldn't touch that without a cyclorama and some serious lighting. :)

Love your videos. I have an 8'x10' green screen. If I understand correctly, I would need two banks of four-4' lights to evenly light the green screen, right? Each bank is currently on sale for about $1k, so this is a $2k set-up. With your epiphany of using green led's, do you have a cheaper recommendation without all the bells and whistles? Thanks!

Well, it depends on how much of the talent is in the shot. If you have an 8x10, it's not like you are capturing 8x10? In other words, maybe the shot shows 6x4? That's something to consider. These lights I show are expensive, and worth if you do this a lot, otherwise, a few one-time deals, I don't think so. You can try (I haven't) to DIY something with LED tube lights and green covers, or buy the green tubes which are available. You could also use a lot of plain old LED lights and try gels that are green to get that effect. Lots of options that I haven't personally tried - it will take some research and testing on your part.

Awesome video as always! Thank you for posting. I bought 4 of these lights and also downloaded the green screener app, however on the app I can not get the lights to get up to 100% green on the high quality level at 100% of the lights. What level is tolerable for you in the app?

Hundred percent is nearly impossible. Just set it at medium level and you should be good. The tools for video now a day to pull the green out are pretty awesome.

Nice video Kevin. Question... What did you apply at 16:11 and 16:17 in lighting or in post? It seems to have blurred the edges (of head, shoulders, arms) and made you look less like a cut-out and more like you're part of the background. (or maybe it was what you did at 15:30... executive summary question, how did you blur your edges to eliminate the cut-out effect?) Thanks man for your stellar content!

Nothing in post or lighting. It is lit as you see it before I apply the background if I understand your question. It's the background blur that tricks the eye.

I had a go using a white screen and using a projector to illuminate it with green light produced by a jpg 16:9 rectangle. This was a very cheap option given that the only thing I didn't already own was the jpg green rectangle but needed a lot on trial and error to get reasonable results.

ADR Yep...not cheap, but in relation to other prosumer lights - works. As mentioned, these would be for people who do screen work a lot. An occasional shot? Ah...no. :)

Great video, Kevin. Learning a lot from your posts. I do some video/photo production work for my small business, and we're building a new location soon. As part of the design, I have asked to have a studio put in where I can shoot video and stills related to our business. Basically, I got my wish- sort of... with a room that will be about 8'5" wide by about 16' deep. The rest of the building is dedicated to other, more important stuff related to our business- and that's as big as I can get. If I'm lighting an 8' wide green screen- how many of these lights would you surmise I need? 2L and 2 R? More? I will put wall mounted soft boxes to light the talent and put high-hats in the ceiling for a backlight/hairlight with a gel (learned that from you, too). Love to hear your thoughts.

I would start with two left and two right. Check it. Get ore if needed. You can get two four footers on each side and your done.

Hi Kevin, at 12:51 you turn lights on to light green screen and at 13:08 you point out some shadows, but at 13:16 when you change light color over to green, you say, that is how you light a green screen. How does changing color of light remove the shadows you pointed out at 13:08. I watched an older video you did back in 2015 with lighting the screen evenly which was great. If you used green screener app at 13:08 and then switched color over to green at 13:16, would the green screener app screen look different? Looking to purchase in the next day or two, was also wondering if you had to buy the bolts separately to attach lights vertically.

The bolts are simply the pins from existing light stands. The original shadows you see is with the lights not on, and just the lights hitting me. You’ll see some shadow when I initially turn them on, and that is because I am using white. The green on green removes those. Remember that I have these lights positioned in frame and close so you can see them. Normally they would be out of frame and to the sides more so no shadows would appear.

I haven’t tried it but yes I do think it’s achievable. I think no matter how you do it as long as you’re shooting green light on the green screen you’re going to get the best results you can.

hi again, curious about your video. Your method has me thinking a lot. It makes sense. How come you don't hear more people doing it your way, with lighting green screens with bright green light? Is it the spill from the light? What are the negatives to this? It seems with RGB adjustable led lights, you can be very creative. The 2 lights you have lighting the subject, I assume you don't want that white light hitting to much your green screen that is being lit by green lights, or does that not affect anything. I have searched a lot on lighting green screen of small rooms, and your method has the cleanest results. I have such small space, that my subject might be 3-6 feet from the green screen. I hope the spill of green light does not get on me. How close to the green screen can you stand while using your method. Lots to think of.

I haven't tested the exact distance until you get spill. And you're re correct, not many mention using green light as they are worried about spill. As long as you have the lights behind you and control the light with the barn doors, it's not a problem.

Great video as always, Kevin. About affordability, would a colored T8 be a valid budget alternative? I've spent a tremendous amount of time trying to find suitable LED T8's to spin-off your earlier bank light setup (unsuccessfully to date), but am I correct to reasonably assume that these here www.sylvania-lighting.com/product/en-INT/products/0002566/ do appear to have acceptable luminosity for chroma at ~3100lm? They're only 15$ a pop.

I notice when using the Greenscreener App you have it set to “low”. Is that generally sufficient? I have been shooting for the mid, but that has been driving me bonkers. Part of it is based off your other video, I am trying to use the wrong type of lights.

Should work. Always test, pull the key, and see what you’ve got. Once you dial it in you’ll be jammin.

Hi, your lights are not available, do you have another choice? And do you still recommend this? How many sets did you buy, did you buy 4 sets, 2 for the green screen and 2 for the subjects. I have a 16 X8 foot distance room, I will be cutting it close. Any help, thanks

They are in-stock at B&H. 2-sets for green screen longer ones. I do recommend, however, if money is a consideration, look into LEDs and colored tubes.

Kevin - The Basic Filmmaker In the process of putting together a middle school and high school broadcast studio. Three walls have been painted chroma key green. We'll use virtual sets included in our switcher software. I found XKGlow 3' light strips they can be many colors, but only one color at a time, so in this case green. Each strip is 150 lumen at full white, a total of 600 Lumens. Less I suppose for the color green. How many lumens approximately do you need on each side of an 8x10 area to light it?

I could guess all over the place. ALWAYS the best is to test, test, test using the camera, lights, and setup you have, adjusting as necessary.

Since the 4 pack comes with 1 power adaptor and I want to separate two lights together left and right do I have to buy another power adaptor? Also do I have to buy cables to join the lights together for daisy chaining each side of 2 lights for power ?

As an alternative (for video conference) is it possible to use projection and/or wall paper tv(s) ala Mandalorian? If green screen lighting is already $2K+. Would/is projection practical/possible for under 5k? would be a fun diy project :)

Haven't tried it. Might. Frankly, the easiest is to use pre-printed backdrops with a bit of blur on them.

Kevin - The Basic Filmmaker my green screen is already pretty good. It’s become a fun hobby where I’m looking to upgrade with something akin to an unreal engine generated background. MAkes no sense re video conferencing. Fun, tho:) perhaps, I’ll try rear projection.

Based on your video it appears that you have two lights vertical on the right and two lights versicle on the left. Is that your setup? Or do you also have lights horizontal above? Your exact positioning of the 4 lights would have helped in this video. Please clarify and thank you!

Question-Do you think 3 philips hue rgb lights (800 lumens per bulb) on either side of the green screen (with diffusion) would work for a 8ft x 10ft green screen? Its a bit cheaper than came-tv, and can be controlled by one system. Philips is overpriced-one lighting system is attractive and (sadly) I’m already somewhat invested. . Im also looking over total/even green light coverage. I use it for video conferencing. Thanks for a great channel!

Hey Graham! I don't think manufacturer matters, just that you get what you can afford and what works. Heck, I'd get some cheap LED lights on either side and buy some of those cheesy green tube covers and play with those until you get good results. Then when you invest in the bigger dollar stuff, you'll know if.what you should spend your money on.

For sure. That's why it's always best to get everything setup beforehand. Once you nail the setup and pull a key, you'll know you've got it, as it's very little tweaking. Spill is the bane of the keying world. :)

In my case, I'm not able to stand several feet away from the green screen. At most in my room I can get 2 feet, so I worry about getting spill with using green light. So I just use regular white light. I'd like to upgrade to some sort of Kino-style lights, but Kinos are extremely expensive and the only alternatives I've found aren't dimmable and are short.

Spill is a definite problem that close. Yep, kinos are crazy expensive. You might want to take a look at the room again. The camera is always moveable, as you are.With a new look, you might be able to pull yourself away, or the screen away.

Thx @@BasicFilmmaker it would be pretty ezy as solid as those green leds were. Just overlay and fade a straight shot of the wall as you walk out of the green light. I'm thinking it would be pretty effective based on how green you were when you stepped back. If you flagged the edge of those lights for an abrupt transition reaching your arm up it might be creepy. You inspired me. I've already found some green T8 tube covers.

Great video and information (ideas). I have a couple questions. It appears these are maybe florescent tubes. Have you noticed any issues with the flicker of a florescent tube and white balance? Second question. At 14:40 when you set your light level, I noticed there was vignetting in all four corners. Do you see an issue with that and not having a consistent color to remove? Glasses and green eyes are the gremlins of green screens. Ultimately, someone ends up looking like a possessed demon if they have glasses or green eyes. As I have said before, love your content and enjoy pulling ideas from you. Keep up the great work. Thank you for what you do.

These are LEDs - look like fluorescent though. No flicker problems. With fluorescent tubes, I found that as long as they have a ballast built in, they usually don't flicker, but it's something to check on camera.

That's a good idea. if you could get LED strips on a frame that have enough output, it might do, but most strips don't have that power.

It really doesn't work for most complex VFX shots. Your red tracking markers are going to look black as there is no red light for them to reflect.

Makes more sense to color balance with my LEDs for talent with LED greens for a Green Screen (rather than the tungstens that I just bought as a cheap $160 kit) and I also like the length for even lighting for that larger green screen canvas.

Huh. That’s a cool idea. Before buying anything else, I would test everything with what you have until you feel you nailed it. That way, you’ll know what you really need before dropping the coin on these.

Yup, until you try it, you never know. If the tungsten don’t work, I can still use them to compliment the LEDs (with filters) but, eventually, I’ll be shooting in theatre space with all Tungsten for the painted backdrops we already have for the play... so - at some point - I will need to Balance Tungsten with my LEDs (for the actors in front of the set pieces) anywhichwaythouwouldhaveit.com Thanx for the updates on Green Screening!

Ok. Wait. All this time we have been trying to light our green screen with evening balanced white light, daylight balanced foreground and white balancing out light for the foreground, and now you’re saying shine green light on the green screen. My head is exploding.

Yep. Been trying to find something "affordable" (opinions may vary on this) for quite some time, without having to DIY or cheap out on crummy finicky gear. At least in 2019, this was what I finally CAME up with. :)
