this is how you start a traeger grill that has a bad hot rod, please be carefull as this is dangerous....please follow your owners manual if u have any questions...this is just a demonstration

This saved me today. I had a brisket ready to go when the Traeger wouldn't ignite. Fan and auger worked fine but the hot rod had fried. Of course the parts store is closed today (Memorial Day) so I had no chance at getting a replacement. A paper towel and vegetable oil started the pellets and the grill is smoking away. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for this video! I couldn't see the forest through the trees to think about manually lighting the pellets. The auger and fan works just a bad hot rod ... geez! My pellet stove for my house has never failed to ignite. I didn't realize the Traeger Hot rods are only expected to last 2 years. Anyway, thanks for the video, and I will check on 5 year warranty someone mentioned below.

Holy shit!!!! This worked perfectly. I used a Colman propane torch to get it started. Thank you sir.

My igniter went out and I use a propane torch to light mine but I'll replace the rod here soon. This trick is pretty cool too!

I had same thing happen on my 3 month old 075b. called service department and they had my info and sent one the next day. will have to use this method once or twice till it arrives. thanks

Thank you, I just got a Traeger PTG and the hot rod already went out. I called Traeger customer support and they're shipping a new one but I wanna use it this weekend and not sure I'll have the part by then. This should work fine.

Phew, this saved our Thanksgiving turkey. The grill was tripping our GFCI. Tracked it down to the hot rod. Disconnecting that and lighting manually got us going again.

You can use a Non-GFI protected outlet also as a temporary solution.

I have the same traeger type during my last 10 minutes from completing my brisket the traeger started to loose heat from 225f down to 123f , everything was working all fans and controller it might be the thermostat rob or the hot rod that got shot . Did u ever face this ?

I used rubbing alcohol instead of the oil. just about a shot.I let it soak in and lit it. Waited as you did and it took off. I didn't use the paper towel though. Didn't need it.

I just brushed the face of the hot rod with a small brush and it fired right up. Try this before you call the rod “bad”. I think mine was covered with carbon, makes sense to me!

Don't forget that the 5 year warranty covers a new hot rod. I just got one shipped. My smoker is only 15 months old. Tech told me the hot rods only last 1 to 3 years.
