I started collecting Aladdin lamps years ago. I live in middle Tennessee. We had an ice storm and it knocked our power out. We were lit up in our house like nothing happened. I love Aladdin lamps.

Thank you so much for posting this! I only wish I'd seen it sooner. We lost power last week and I pulled out the lamp (a housewarming gift from our buyer's agent). I ended up lighting it pretty much entirely wrong and damaged the mantle. Thanks to you, I won't do that again

My wife and I were given an Aladdin lamp for our wedding nearly 50 years ago. We lived out in the “bush” and had no electricity so it was a very useful gift. I keep it maintained just in case the power goes out but I had forgot how to light the lamp so I checked out this video for a refresher on how to light our lamp.

Good video for beginners. Small additional comment which I'm syure all experianced users would agree with. When turning down, do it in three stages. Full to low light, then to blue flame (no light) . Always ensure the last stage is blue, or the lamp can smell when cooling due to unburned gasses. As mentioned in the video rapid heating and cooling shortens the life of the mantle, typically causing the frame to crack then buckle and disintergrate. After 50 years and three previous generations of using these we learn the hard expensive way!!

I have yet to read or hear someone suggest turning the lamp up to full brightness slowly to warm the chimney slowly. Sudden hot flame can and will break the Lox-On chimney. Even more important to do this with other center draft (which the Aladdin is) Ryo burners.

After a few power cuts I tried a Tilley lamp which gives more light but is noisy and constantly needs pumping to keep pressurised, they do give an incredible amount of light though. Then I tried some hurricane lamps which are silent and easy to use but don't produce a lot of light. Finally bought one of these aladin lamps they're almost perfect, silent, don't need constant pumping up and throw out a lot of very white light. They can be a bit finicky until you get used to them (big tip - never run them at maximum) but I will keep mine forever, you just never know when you'll need it.

What I done with my hanging lamp I use is replaced the model B burner with a newer 23 from the 70’s. Because they are easier to light and needs less adjustment than a B. You can use a 23 in any old glass lamp and save the B in its condition.

I'm glad I found your video. Thank you for showing us how to light and extinguish our Aladdin Lamp! I found a person in the New Braunfels Texas area who is a supplier and he works on them. I was told that if you don't let the lamp warm up before raising the flame, it would possibly shoot out a flame about 3 feet high out the chimney. Not wanting to do that! Blessings!

Hello, I bought my first Aladdin Lamp about 35 years ago for my mother. Cost about $80.00 at that time. My second lamp I got for myself a few years later for about $250.00. Near as I can tell from the number on the knob is it's a type 26. The chimney broke, and it needs a new mantle. Other than that its fine. I just bought a new lamp this week. The knob reads Maxbright 500. Any advise anyone can give me to get the first one back up and running will be appreciated. The modern mantles are far more fragile then what they used to be. The old ones contained thorium, which is radioactive, but gave the mantles a certain toughness. I made the mistake of burning the mantle on my new lamp unprotected, so have to replace it. I love these lamps, and in the event of a power outage, there is nothing better for emergency lighting. I also like them for a bit of atmosphere during holidays. My experience with these, pay attention to the lamp. I have experienced flames shooting out the top of the chimney all the way to the ceiling. Also, never put your hand over the chimney. The heat coming out of there is incredibly high, and you will burn yourself before you can blink. That being said, it's still the best lamp you can have in an emergency, and as I said before, I love using these to ad some atmosphere on major holidays. Just be careful okay?

@bigskunk801
@bigskunk801 5 ай бұрын
I use a 23 burner just because of that. 23 burners fit all glass lamps. They burn great without a lot of adjustment to continue burning correctly. You can also lower the brightness to stop soot from gathering in either burner. Soot usually forms when wick is too high. Also a blue flame is needed to burn clean. After lighting wait for a minute and lower wick and the flame should be small and blue if you get much yellow flames try cleaning the wick. It’s the not blue flame that makes soot.

My parents have a Lincoln Aladdin with a B wick which I replaced and a new mantle and cleaned everything,but ... I get a mantle glow with too much flame. So in other words when I turn up the lamp for more glow I see flame also. I don't get flame on my #23 when I turn it up just brightness. Any suggestions on why I'm not getting their lamp to work quite the same? Sincerely Scott in Maine

The silk mantle, which is treated to cause bright white incandescence, is the real source of light from an Aladdin lamp. Roughly the light output of a 60 watt bulb, about 800 lumins, and much whiter than a standard kerosene flame. (About 3000 K.) The even trimming of the wick is paramount to good light output. An uneven flame will cause a portion of the mantle to not illuminate and will also cause sooting of the mantle where the flame is too high.

Have been trying to get an answer to, how often do you clean and trim the wick. Tks
@bigskunk801
@bigskunk801 5 ай бұрын
You clean the wick when the blue flame doesn’t go completely around wick when you light it on both sides. Flame should spread completely around wick within a minute or so. When cool To clean use an Aladdin wick cleaner tool. Remove flame spreader from center raise wick about 6mm above burner and insert cleaning tool in center, gently push down and turn back n forth to clean usually doesn’t need much. In emergency just lightly scrape wick horizontally with a knife where it’s not lighting. You don’t need to trim wick but if it comes apart with a few threads cut thread close with razor or very sharp knife.

@bigskunk801
@bigskunk801 5 ай бұрын
After 6 years you probably have it figured out. In case you don’t. Your wick probably needs cleaning. Get an Aladdin wick cleaning tool. The ideal flame is a blue flame. After lighting wick let warm up for a minute or so. Lower wick until it gets down like you are turning it off. The flame should be completely around wick and be blue. After you see the blue flame put gallery on. If you have much yellow flames you need to clean or replace wick or soot will form without clean blue flames.

I’m not sure what you mean by. Open. Sometimes you can soak burner in vegetable oil and it will loosen the crudd and be usable. Usually if your burner is in bad shape it’s cheaper to just buy a new 23 burner. If you have a glass Aladdin lamp and you want to use it, get a new 23 burner off the internet or eBay. You can get some kerosene and a mantle at the same time. The new burner n mantle will have instructions for use.

This is just what I need to know. It would be useful to know what type of fuel to use. In the UK we had pink and blue paraffin. Pink was a lower fraction- slightly oilier - than blue. But since about 1990 there was only blue and latterly even that has disappeared.

Have you tried denatured alcohol in your lamps? The alcohol flame is basically lightless, but after all, the flame is bringing the mantle to incandescence, so that shouldn't matter. Would it be hot enough? Would have to be a 100% cotton wick of course. I burn this in my Perfection kerosene heater.

Sorry if this is a silly question, do oil lamps make any kind of sound as they operate? 12v leds have a humming sound and it drives me crazy.

@@edwatts9890 Voltage ripple on the inductor of DC boost or buck circuits can physically vibrate wasting energy and annoying the everloving hell out of anyone good hearing, or paining those of us with hyperacusis. Just because your hearing is comparatively deficient, doesn't qualify anyone else as crazy. I calibrate audiometers as part of my living due to my hearing.

The vast majority of "12-Volt" LED's operate on battery power, usually in automotive applications.

Question: I recently bought a log cabin in the woods, and of course, I got extremely interested in oil lamps/lanterns. I tried a conventional inexpensive lantern, and found that even with very refined oil, I have to have an open window, or the smoke is noticeable. Because the Aladdin mantle seems almost like an afterburner, it seems like an Aladdin would burn much cleaner. But I've never tried one. Can anyone provide a hands-on validation or debunking of my theory? Thanks! --Scott

Over time, any "oil" lamp will produce soot and a small amount of vapor which will make the soot somewhat greasy. Indeed, this was the reason for "spring cleaning" in times past. Use your Aladdin lamp(s) as much as you want, but be aware that cleaning day is coming.

If you have a glass Aladdin you want to use and it has a B burner replace it with a new 23 like the one in the video. There easy to use and require less fiddling to keep burning correctly. The key is to not burn to bright

I can't get the whole mantle to glow as Tom did in the video. No matter how long I warm it, I can only get the upper 2/3 to glow. When I turn the wick higher, the mantle starts to blacken. How can I crank the light all the way without messing up the mantle?

You might have to trim and/or clean the wick.

Your reply is appreciated but a wick and a mantle are two different animals.

You might try moving your flame spreader in or out. It effects where the mantle is glowing.

Make sure the wick is burning all the way around. After lighting wait a minute or so. Lower wick until the flame is small and burns blue. If you have to much yellow flame or flame doesn’t go completely around wick. It needs cleaning with Aladdin wick cleaning tool. I often make sure my wick is burning correctly and clean with blue flames

I have two Aladdin lamps that I keep for emergencies and for decoration because they are very pretty lamps, I have not used them yet and I have not burned the mantle in yet but I can do that when needed, when I was a kid we only had lamps and the best one was an Aladdin in the sitting room (1950's), it hung from the ceiling and my dad was the only one allowed to touch it. These days it's hard to get spares especially here in the UK and so damned expensive so I leave the mantle as it is less likely to be damages before it's burned in.
