I'm curious as to your thoughts as to the reflections in the sunglasses as I find it super distracting. I tend to ask the operator in these scenarios if they have polariser filters which they often say no, what would you do differently to avoid this reflections or would you just say reflections are apart of nature? Thanks for sharing your knowledge btw! Love your videos

As a camera op...having a Courtesy being set up is a game changer. Since you asked, the only thing I'd have done differently was have him remove the sunglasses. Those reflections are too much. I'm sure that wasn't your call though.

I agree. Overall it looked great! I think if the sun glasses could have been tilted up to remove the catchlight from the silk that would have been nice. For me, I would have tried to almost back light him at the talents 7 or 8 o’clock which would have probably changed how much neg fill would have to come into play. But it’s easy to say all that from a couch! There are so many variables on set so you have to make due with the time and space you have, especially on a work site. Overall well done and keep up the great work!

not just the catchlight, but the reflection of the entire crew and all of the gear. If you give the prompter it's own tight courtesy, or black wrap the edges, it would make the screen much easier for talent to read in those conditions. I've never actually done that, but I'm 99% sure that would make a big difference. @@alexwebermedia

Nice work Piotr. Was wind ever an issue for you? We always use combos for the heft and wide base for stability with an 8x8 or bigger and hammer stakes into the ground if there’s nothing to tie off to. I see you tied off to the grill of a truck which is a great option as well. Seen frames take off with a gust of wind many times even when on mombos triple bagged.

Reflections are noticeable in the sunglasses, but I totally understand not wanting squinting talent. Surprised 1/2 grid wasn’t too dark, but it looked pretty good. Curious what other options people would use here such as 1/4 grid, half soft frost, or hilight. I would have probably used my medium overhead rollers for the 8x8 here since it was relatively flat. The smaller footprint of the stands used makes me nervous about wind.

I would go with the 1/4 grid overhead. in this situation the half is knocking down too much exposure to match the background. using the 1/4 and ND would probably give a more natural realistic look. but it comes down to taste personally. Ive done a similar setup with an 8x8 1/4 grid and a 8x8 neg with great results. Aussie sun tho ;).

I was thinking the same thing about using the 1/4 - especially since all of the stuff in the background was white or very reflective. lol The 1/2 seemed to cut it down too much.

Great video overall. It look like you guys were working on a tight time line & crew. My only suggestion of course would have fought a little for time / budget to be able use the sun as back light and opted to either wrap the light around the subject with bounce or possibly use another light source powerful enough to bounce back & wrap around. Also just nitpicking but I could see the reflection of the crew in the shades the actors were wearing. And this was overall great content.

Def great results for sure with that 8x8, I am curious about the difference between 3/4 stop diffusion grid and 1/2 stop diffusion grid, which one is thicker or lighter, those two confuse me a lot.

Kudos on the diffusion and negative setup. The shaping looks great. That said, you can see everything from the setup as well as the crew members in the subject's glasses. Totally understand that he wanted to wear sunglasses so he could see the teleprompter, especially with him getting blasted from the sun and it reflecting off the light-colored ground. Depending on the gear you had on the shoot, you could've possibly used another large negative to black out the area right behind the camera or just had the crew further off to the side; Probably had to deal with them wanting to see the monitor. Also, depending on if you had it with you, a dark furniture pad in front of the talent would help cut the reflection bouncing off the ground, but it could've been a headache having to clean off the gravel dust afterward.

I'm sure it's out of your control, but the reflections in the talents glasses is really distracting. I know our Texas sun is harsh, but I would have just let the talents eyes adjust. Of course your lighting it always great!
