We live in a complex world that is getting more complex every single day. And in this complex world, it is important to make intentional decisions to strive for more simplicity in life. In this video, I share five different strategies I use to seek a more simple life in these complex times.
1. Strengthen Your Weak Ties
There are two main classifications when it comes to relationships: strong ties and weak ties. Strong ties are close people in your life that you trust and rely on like, family, friends, and coworkers. Weak ties are people in your life who aren't strangers, but aren't close like, the barista, the barber, and the cashier. And in this complex world, we often focus on strengthening our strong tie relationships, but disregard our weak tie relationships. In this complex world, it is important to see the value in these weak tie relationships and focus on strengthening them.
2. Help Others
In the book, "The Book of Joy," the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu speak about joy and how, "Joy is achieved by helping others." In our complex world, we often focus on ourselves and try to become happy by seeking things in the material world; however, the more self centered your life is, the more depressed you will become. As humans, we get the most amount of joy when we are helping other people. And in these complex times, it is important to do small acts of kindness that help other people.
3. Limit Your Options
As the world becomes more complex, we are given an abundance of options when we buy something. Having this abundance of options can often stress you out and make you second guess your decisions. There is a beauty in having less options in life because it removes some of the stress in the decision making process. In these complex times, we need to make intentional decisions to limit our options and make the decision making process more simplistic.
4. Guard What Comes In Your Mind
With the rise of the internet and big data, we are constantly being pulled in from all directions to consume information. If you are not cautious with what you are consuming, it can affect your emotions in a negative way. And as the world becomes more complex, it is important to consume information intentionally and protecting what type of content you consume.
5. Ya Mismo
"Ya mismo" is an Ecuadorian expression that is used with time and it basically means, "I don't know, but don't worry because it'll eventually work out." As the world becomes more complex, the more we feel the need to be productive and use our time wisely; however, this can often lead to a bunch of stress and anxiety. In these complex times, we need to embrace this concept of "ya mismo" and not worry too much because things always work out.

I try to maintain the same routines each morning (wake up early, exercise, sit down to breakfast, read, head out to work). I also adhere to your advice in "limiting my options" by sticking to my local favorite restaurants and prefer to shop in person as opposed to buying goods online. I don't care or need to try every new restaurant or hotspot in town. I'm happy with my two or three favorites all the time.

Yo Austin. Been watching for months now. I'm early 50s and just retired with a small pension check and a small stash of money. Since I have no rent I live on only 800 per month. I don't feel deprived...I eat well, hike a lot, enjoy friends, read philosophy, etc. I doesn't take much to be happy.

My husband and I needed my dog watched while we were away. I made her reservations at a pet hotel. She didn't like the place. She was terrified. The girl at the desk said she can't stay. She doesn't have her bordatella shot. I said okay. It was a long day of prepping to go. I brought her home. I called the state park where we had our reservations and asked them to switch us to the cabin that allows dogs. It's booked. I called our vet. They closed. Uh oh. I called another vet who cared for our pets previously. They got us in first thing. She got her shot along with a flu shot. I also scheduled a follow up flu shot. Then I called the pet resort and got her space. We packed the car along with her belongings and dropped her off. She didn't fight us this time. My husband had been flipping out the whole time. I told him I did what needed to be done.

My 12 year old and I had a chat last night about being lonely. He said that when he's lonely, he watches videos on his phone or plays video games or Legos. He said that's fine. It's okay to be lonely. We have each other and work/school friends. Best just rest when it's quiet. He's my favorite new philosopher! 🥰

Been doung this all along. Actually my weak relationships are best as I am an introvert and STOPPED trying to be outgoing, life of the party etc. I also don't like family politics so stopped trying to engage much there. My culture does not match my spirit so I am no contact with all except one sibling. I used to help others but don't anymore because the helping has become commercialized in many cases. But occassionally I donate anonymously if I know for sure there is REAL need. For sure distraction is a BIG problem with all the ads, flashing lights, bells, whistles, go go calls, announcements etc. These things are also commercialized now and designed to separate you from your money. The pandemic was a godsend for getting away from all that for awhile. Good video.

The doorman at BJ'S is Chris. He's been with the company for 10 years. He does the schedule. He also does the hiring. Simone works at the resort that watches my pets. They call it a resort because the pets get play time. I just met her. Terri has been at the vet for over 20 years. She works at the desk. Philadelphia has a Chinatown. I have a favorite bakery there. Minimalism simplifies so much. While we were in Western PA, I went through our camping supplies and weeded more out. My husband laughed and said you never stop decluttering.

I absolutely agree with what you say at 8:54. These days there is so much unrelenting coverage of worldwide disasters that even though we sympathise with the victims, sometimes the onslaught of information is overwhelming. Thank you Agustin for the reminder to be selective about what we consume mentally because we need to guard our own mental health too.

Yesterday I decided to take a leaf from Mr Austin's book, and just spend time in my flat, cleaning and decluttering it. I had the best time! I found things I had lost, and started reading books I had forgotten. I spent no money. You are my hero! I think so often we think we need to go out and party all the time ( seriously expensive in the UK). But deciding to follow your own path is much more fulfilling. Thank you!

I normally try to lead a simple life as much as I can so that I don't have to worry about certain things in life all of the time. I try to keep my plans to a minimum so that if I find out about an event last minute on a weekend, I can go to it without displacing any other commitments. On the flip side of this, I wind up planning out most of my activities when I go on vacation and it tends to make my vacation more stressful than I want it to be. Another way to live a simpler and more enjoyable life is to keep routines. Doing the same process in the morning will keep things quite simplified and easy to manage.

Coming from one of the South Asian countries and living in USA for 20 years, I can tell that people are more available in South Asian countries than in USA. In USA people are always self focused and time focused, always in hurry. That creates lots of issues in life like people being distant, being perfect, finding too many flaws in others and eventually USA is relatively a very lonely nation. When people are lonely and so many mental health crisis, divorced, addictions. You can go on and on. When there is very little closeness in the culture, society, or in country, there are all kinds of other issues arises.

When ur boss ask about the say"ya mismo"😂I do weekly grocery shopping, my kids always love the experience of going in the store to pick what they want, for some reason, most of the time I always interact with the cashiers, this week the cashier was a young white female, she was telling me abt the conflict with her n a coworker, she was asking me for advice, she kept me in the line for so long the ppl waiting in line got irritated 😅, she preceed to play with my kids asking them to go home with her.In a selfish world where everybody for themselves it's good to think n help others.

I was into playing mmorpg. I was addicted but I was happy because I had online friends in the game that I fight with, level-up with, hang out with in the game, help or get help from. Or just chat in the game. Something that I did not have in real life. I avoided playing mmorpgs for years. I thought my life would be better. In terms of career it did get better. But in terms of socially, not really. I tried to connect socially with people in the real world but people just aren’t interested. People just wont give you the time of day in real life. It left me with zero social life. Recently I started trying to get into mmorpgs again because I want to have that social connection again and have fun again and form bonds even if its just online, its better than nothing. Having online friends is better than having none at all.

Well, some of us only have "weak ties". Which I am okay with. I have definitely cut down on the influx of "noise", music, and choices entering my brain. I don't even listen to the radio anymore. Its funny how everything done in America has to be done to music! Maybe we don't need to listen to Madonna in the grocery store! But Augustine, cat videos are life!

Great points. It was surprising to find that the first 4 are all things I do already...but the idea of 'ya mismo' is definitely something to work on when the 'I must get it done! Now!!' feeling comes over me. Will it really make any difference if I have a cup of tea first, leave it until tomorrow, or even, don't do it at all?! One way I pursue a simpler life, is by doing most of my shopping in the very small town 5 minutes by car from my home, rather than going into the much larger one which is 5 minutes the other way...limits choices; people in the smaller, individual shops recognise me; you're right; it's really good to feel part of a community.

I believe in keeping life really simply, but totally disagree with the first 2 in the list. I don't think you should strengthen your weak ties if you want a simple life. Keep it simple. Just go and get your hair cut, you don't need to develop a relationship with the barber. So don't worry about it. The barber is probably sick of talking nonsense all day anyhow. Don't have too many strong ties either, they take time and money and you'll end up having to do lots of things you don't really want to do to maintain them. If an opportunity comes up to help somebody naturally in your day to day life then great. Don't seek "do-gooding" opportunitues to boost your ego and impress your friends. You will just lose more of your precious time. I love the last 3 items in the list.

This is one of your best for me. I identify with all of your points, though somewhat in a slightly different way than you explained. One & two are totally what I try to follow. I live just outside of NYC & for #3 I would have said "focus'' your options. It's not so easy to limit what forces it's way into our world, but it's crucial to not be overwhelmed & to focus on what works & not get distracted. For #4 I agree that less media is better, but I kept Facebook to keep track of old friends & extended family, but I only check every couple of weeks & keep a simple profile myself, so as not to feed into the beast of social media. My "ya mismo" I call " go with the flow" or "play it by ear." You're so right not to stress out about the little stuff that always takes care of itself anyway. Thanks for the video!

Yes, so true. When it comes to all the options, for example ice cream, I usually stick to the same old go to ... vanilla. And then get really wild and get strawberry, cookie dough, mint, cinnamon from time to time, hehe. We have a lot of options, but are they all "good/quality" options? My secret to limiting my options is to simply: 1) Choose the most affordable - as cheap and frugal as I can get away with 2) Then choose the option that is of the best quality or the wisest choice (either for me and/or the environment). For example, I don't need premium platinum toilet paper for my bum bum! She's perfectly fine without it. 3) I guess if its hard to make a choice after that, you can choose what "sparks joy" ha Try this, my friend, and you will soon realize that we really don't have as many options out there as we think (especially when it comes to food from the grocery store)! LOL

I agree with all of this. Simplification of life has greatly benefited me. However, about the diversity of English. If you ever have the opportunity to listen to someone from the more rural part of the southeast United States and someone from Scotland have conversation, you may not think they are both speaking the same language.
@Andygb78

Exactly. That's even the case within England itself, with areas such as the north east, where people in the south would struggle to understand what they are saying. It's not only the accent, but the local dialect and expressions that seeps in to people's conversations in different areas that people outside of that area have never heard of.

Hm, I agree with most of your points, but definitely not the first one. As an introvert, small talk and these „loose connections“ are an absolute nightmare and something that does the opposite for me as it‘s more or less constant stress. And at least in my opinion that‘s rather not leading to a more simple life 😉

I find the animation distracting from the written words. I don't mind the image, I just don't like the animated image. (I'll still watch all your videos anyway, I just won't enjoy them as much lol) xx

Good point, deleting Facebook now. It brings no use to me, just mindless scrolling and commenting

You can have a great attitude and be super frugal, that doesn't mean things open up for you. You can save orphans from a burning building but you still can't find a place to live LOL. Been saving and living frugally for 5 years and now I'm going blind....think me finding a place to live is just going to "work out"???

It's better to have a great attitude than a bad one. It's better to be super frugal than super spendy. And it's better to save orphans from a buring building than to let them die.

@@NJGuy1973 This is just replying back to me what I already wrote. So what was your intent on regurgitating my comment ? How is this helpful?

If I say that the historic person we call St Paul said this very thing in his letters ie be careful what you think about and what you let into your mind then a whole lot of numpties will shriek "eek, urgh,a Christian,no joy,no fun, knows the earth is 6K years old, wants to cuddle baby Jesus. Sadly I cannot claim to be a Christian as my bad character lets me down,I refuse to give all my money to the poor people, actually I did that once, and we're they grateful! 🤔🤪 and I find Jesus a bit of a pain but that is mostly no doubt due to my incomprehension and lack of grace and charity. A lot of these living philosophies are incorporated in a number of faiths in different ways.

You're not going to stop at 100 videos, are you? You're helping to keep me sane. This song helps too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e6xipbRkzJamYHU.html (a bit of northern English humour for you)
