My grandfather passed away 8 years ago and as a kid he used to tell me stories about ww2, he told me how on d-day there were so many unused bullets on the floor that when he ran out of ammo he just grabbed a crap ton of bullets off the floor and put them in his pockets. The thing is he couldn’t find any of the clips to hold the bullets so he fed his m1-garand 1 bullet at a time by hand and he told me that several times while doing this his thumb would get caught where you put the bullet into the gun and it would hurt a lot but that a little pain was better than being dead.

Very odd story, I'm guessing he wasn't on the beach? You do realize what happened on d day right? How does this story make any sense, was he fighting for Germany? I'm sure you just didn't want to write an insanely long story, but more information would be great.
@TheJsmortis
@TheJsmortis 2 жыл бұрын
@@jmc655 You know they had to push up the beach past the bunkers on D-Day and D-Day didn't just include the beaches? Paratroopers dropping behind the bunkers sometimes lost there gear due to getting stuck in trees, landing in water etc. Maybe he still had his gun but lost most of his spare Ammo. He might have only had a spare clip or two for his M1. Why is this so hard to believe? Just think how chaotic that day was crap gets lost lol. Im bored that's why im engaging in this conversation lol.
@jmc655
@jmc655 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheJsmortis I get all that, but where in all that is there just tons of ammo on the ground? Tbh I have no idea how ammo was moved around during WW2, I would imagine it was in crates just full of loose ammo possibly ammo already in clips. So if he said he just grabbed ammo out of a crate it would sound reasonable. I just need more information to understand why there would be so much ammo on the ground. Dirt is the last thing you want on ammo.

I was watching a WW2 documentary about the fighting in Europe and they were interviewing a man who fought there,he was talking about fighting in the towns and villages.He said the enemy learned pretty quick that when they heard that “PING” sound you were out. They would break cover to attack while you were reloading.What the GI’s would do sometimes during a fire fight would take an empty clip and throw it on the ground making the enemy think you were out when they heard the PING! and break cover. Once out in the open the GI’s would cut them down with their still loaded weapons, the GI said it was very effective.

Clip dude....Clip Stop mistaking these simple terms please Clips: pieces of metal that hold ammo and are used to reload faster or feed an internal gun mag system. Usually simple pieces of metal that can be discarded after. For the Garand the clip is necessary to use it though. Mag: complex system that holds ammo and also feeds it with a spring system towards the firing chamber.

Fun fact. During the war, American soldiers abused the iconic sound of the m1 garand to their tactical advantage. German soldiers had learned that the sound indicated a spent clip, and would use it as indication for when to emerge from cover in order to fire on the enemy while they were without ammo. American soldiers quickly learned to save spent clips and to use them to trick the enemy into exposing themselves. Essentially, when fighting in urban areas with hard, concrete grounding, they would load a full clip ready to go, take the spent clip, and strike it against the ground as hard as they could. This made a noise similar to the sound the M1 Garand is known to produce when exhausting it’s ammunition. The enemy, perceiving the sound to indicate the enemies need to reload, would then emerge from cover in order to fire, only to be greeted by a blast from a fully loaded rifle. Sneaky business, but devilishly shrewd. In war brains amount for just as much as brawn. Clever stuff I’d say

It was as accurate, powerful, and dependable as any other service rifle of its day, and being semi-automatic gave it an immense advantage over bolt actions. A shooter with a Garand is probably going to get eight aimed shots off before a guy using a bolt action gets 3 or 4.

Little tip when you pull back the slide? (Forgive me if wrong term) hold it back with your hand/pinky while you load the rounds, I've heard many stories that when they dont sometimes it doesn't stay back and can cut your hand/finger really bad and Injur yourself. Side note:my dad has one and it was my all time favorite rifle to shoot) :)
