I am so glad I have now retired from plumbing, after 40yrs, I am from an age of lead wipe joints, and solid fuel heating, towards the end of my career, I fitted combi boilers, bathrooms etc, I can honestly say, watching you clambering between roof trusts, and itchy insulation, brings back the aspects of the job people don't appreciate, your attitude towards problem solving is exemplary, I enjoy the content, and watching the next generation of plumbing, but I will stick with my multi fuel burner, running ten rads, and gravity hot water, with only the pump that can fail, all the best to you young man, your doing good....

As a service provider for one of the main heat pump manufacturers in the UK. We get so many visits to heat pumps under performing due to badly designed systems, they just sling them in and become a nightmare for customers to get the installers back. Wiring becomes much easier to understand once you know what everything does. Will not surprise me if heat pumps become the new “have you been mis-sold ppi”

This exactly. As soon as I saw the government delcare heat pumps would replace gas boilers I knew it would happen. I really don't think air source heat pumps are viable in the UK given our poor outdated housing stock and that our winters are cold and damp. Most heat pumps are going to spend winters with their coils iced up. Maybe new builds where you could design the houses for heat pumps.

I have a Mitsubishi Zubadan fitted to a five year old property which was built fully insulated and with underfloor heating and large radiators upstairs , and solar panels. Cheap to run , only issue was the installers to save money didn’t fit the single large pump but rather two regular central heating pumps. House is still warm and comfortable but would have been even cheaper with the right pump which pumps more water faster around the system per minute

I love this video! Thank you so much for sharing. Shame it should have been a more positive video but what's most important is that it was honest! Just shows how some MCS contractors need to up their game in the planning and specification department. This is one issue I stumbled into when getting a heat pump installed - main contractors that where cowboys. I eventually went with an ‘official’ supplier from daikin (the manufacturer) and they were great. Knew absolutely everything and let me geek out and help design the system. It works just great but let me tell you weather compensation is absolutely essential.

In Ireland, Eire, there's no HP grant from the SEAI without a full technical assessment, basically an energy survey covering the heat retention and ventilation in place. Not free, about £400, and paid back out of the grant if you get it. There's a follow up report to help the home owner make the house heat-pump -ready. I installed a NIBE air source heat pump in 2008, I attended the NIBE training session too, so many times the compressor wouldn’t come on. It would have been worse if I hadn’t installed a gas boiler to supplement the heat. The house was so well insulated we could heat a 20sqm room with a £10 fan heater on the lowest heat setting. Much cheaper to have a fan heater in each room than installing a AS heat pump.

This specific heat pump is one of the best as it can work up to -20 C providing 60 C water on that temperature. It is not the reliability the issue. The issue is that seller had no idea on what he was talking about. HP needs to work in low temperatures as they provide better COP and also ideally to work with two systems (heat pump warm buffer and from buffer to go into radiators). That's why in warmer days ideally need to provide less hot water and increase the temperature during cold days. The main problem on this is that radiators have been calculated for water temperature at 75 degrees so the energy the provide at 60 is way lower than design. Personally i would advice to leave the gas boiler as much as you can and invest into insulation of your house. If you will create a passive house then you will be able to warm your house with very very little energy. Heat pumps is a very good tool but not for a 50 year house with old windows and no isolation in (or out of) the walls. A last advise to people who want to install HP is to find a heat pump with R32 instead of R410 as I THINK that the latest will be forbidden in coming years. Nice work on plumbing side

In my career I have seen that it is always the worst products & companies spend the most on marketing and this to be exactly what we see in the sale and promotion of ASHP & other 'green' initiatives. In terms of overriding the weather variable setting in the system software, I would think this is a breach of contract by the main contractor as they are not supplying a product that is fit for purpose (its the equivalent of a garage changing the settings in your vehicles computer system so that it runs the diesel regeneration system all the time you drive).

Hybrid install sounds all right. Basically a low-capacity heat pump that you install next to your combi boiler, and that can run the house most of the months of the year, with your gas flames added on to that heat only when necessary (and with water still coming off gas either way). With gas and electricity pricing like they are now the cost gap is so high that an easy/cheap to install (and in this country subsidized) additional unit like that would be worthwhile fairly quickly. It’s a stopgap but compared to modifying the home properly…

Thank you for posting this and I suspect by doing so you have lost any opportunity for compensation for your ‘lost time’ through no fault of your own. What you have shown in this very short video is what can go wrong will go wrong if you do not do the right design and planning for any project, magnified in this case on every single aspect. You might have lost money but sometimes direct experience of what can go wrong is valuable in moving your own business forward. You have identified all the fracture points in this project and know how to avoid them (if you choose to get involved with heat pumps). I thought the segment on commissioning was f’n shocking. When you consider the time taken to install the system (in fact any system) taking any shortcuts in the commissioning let alone disabling the single most important part of the control system (weather compensation) is absolutely shocking bordering on criminal - because even if the heat pump actually heats the house satisfactorily disabling that function is costing the customer significant (unnecessary) amounts of money every single day the system is in use. An arrogant supplier with no respect for their customer.

Of course, it is one-sided - it is my point of view. Nothing wrong with that. I am not naming anyone. Just describing my experience. I did the survey. I did not receive any information about the job until I threatened to cancel the job last minute, at which stage I received an incomplete set of Information. I queried that, and I was promised an amended version, which I never got. The design supplied was not feasible. It said to reuse existing 22mm primaries on 10kW heat pump. An engineer from the main contractor was on site and agreed that the design was not feasible. I contacted the company to discuss. The company engineer on site told me what I should do. I asked directly: 'what am I supposed to do now?" and I was told to do exactly what you see in the video. Videos like this are less damaging to the industry than companies leaving heat pumps on fixed output. They are desperately trying to spin it now. I am not surprised as it was rather embarrassing on their part.

I’m quite shocked at this. As one of the people that first bought heat pumps into the UK back in the 90s and worked with NIBE first single phase air source heat pump... we really realise that the best efficiencies are within 30 miles from the coast that take advantage of warmer wetter air this sort of installation is very difficult and it’s hard to see any cost savings. The environmental savings in a built-up area are very close to 0 as the power generated comes from gas turbines. Unfortunately in this installation gas sadly would be the cheapest option..

Even if heat pumps are powered by fossil electricity, they are still more environmentally friendly due to their efficiency. It’s sad the weather compensation was turned off. It defeats the whole purpose, but there is a better way by using indoor feed back to set the water temperature. Indoor feed back provides real comfort for the conditioned space. Indoor feedback compensates for the different heat losses of the building and automatically creates a heating curve that is most efficient for the indoor environment. Sadly this is pretty common with many of those company's getting subs in to do the work and yes they don't like weather compensation turned on. Couple reasons, most older people if they're using radiators actually feel colder subconsciously if the system is being influenced by weather comp - true with any heating appliance feeding radiators, and over riding the weather comp on many systems needs an engineer as an end user turning up the stat often won't get the effect they want (hotter radiators). It's a mindset that will change with time but the people want what the people want, until that changes call backs will happen, it's unavoidable. It's a shame because I do enjoy fitting them and I have watched some customers bills fall, and others rise depending how they use it. Sadly these days we appear to be ripping more out than fitting them. I am hoping that changes with the newer models which have 70c+ flow temps using co2 and other gases. It actually does not look half as bad as I expected. Something to keep in mind though if you retrofit

I commissioned myself my own Daikin Monobloc 16kw a couple of months ago, in Greece. The thing is my cousin is an official Daikin dealer, hundreds of km away so he sent it to me. I am a mechanical engineer, my plumber connected it under his experience, my electrician connected it under my advice and I started it up. Documentation was quite good, but it had to be read really carefully to understand and some details were missing. For example, I had a 3rd party boiler (solar) with a resistance heater+heat pump exchanger, I never got Daikin to explain me if and what accessory I needed to connect, for the heater to be connected on the heat pump. So I let it go and installed only the 3 way valve, IF I need the heater I will turn it on with a relay from my smart home system! However, I found the controller to have a perfect wizard for starting up, if you knew what you were doing, it was quite simple, I got it up and running within minutes WITH temperature compensation curve as well!!!

@@UrbanPlumbers almost 300 m2. 16kw is a small figure since in low temperatures, the capacity drops @ 12-13kw, but in my region temperatures reach 0C only a couple of hours per day, ten days per year so not that big deal!

What a nightmare, and they are supposed to be the future, I don’t think so, bet the customer wishes they had gone for a new gas boiler, I would have done, and probably a fraction of the price of that thing, tidy work by you again, but I think you need to kick them into touch.

This is the reason I am just getting another gas boiler fitted for now in place of my broken one. Hopefully in 10+ years time the technology will be more simple and more indipendent installers trained up, such as yourself, will be able to do the full job and not cut corners.

In 10 years time we'll still be using boilers but they'll be moving over to run on hydrogen. When I was a kid before the UK switched to natural gas, boilers ran on coal gas (town gas) which was 50% hydrogen. Another bonus with using hydrogen is no more deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning. And the hydrogen network will allow "gas" stations to compress the gas so we can go an fill up our hydrogen fuel cell cars quickly.

It is only an opinion - but I do not think 100% hydrogen will ever happen. Too difficult, inefficient and expensive to produce, store and transport. Again, just my opinion, but I believe that hydrogen is just a way of gas industry to kick the can down the road for another 10-20 years by blending 20-25% with natural gas, which makes it greener than direct electrics. I would not put my money on hydrogen being distributed in pure form using the current gas network. Also, why would we want to use a gas that most likely will be more expensive to run than direct electric? That is why Heat Pumps do make so much sense.

It’s hard to see from the video but what brand and model and kwh rating did you install as it doesn’t seem to have the riser tank for heat pump. Also isn’t the refrigerant propane/lpg based? Thus should be x feet away from any opening window?
