I am 16 years old.I love math and physics but the problem is that my physics and math teacher doesn’t explain well and he is always like this question doesn’t need any explanation it is logic. On the other hand my biology teacher explains clearly and never makes me feel dumb.Although biology is not my thing but i still get good marks.I love watching your videos u always motivate us to study and u will be remembered as girl who has an exquisite brain.

That was my downfall in maths … I loved the concept of solving these number puzzles, but whenever I asked the teacher something, she would just say "it’s pure logic, it doesn’t need an explanation" and just zoomed right through. I ended up being weak at maths beyond repair because I could not make sense of it on my own and KZfaq was not there to tutor me back then. I still resent that woman to this day!

@@alishaanimations3058 wish that was how it works in secondary educations. Calling a teacher out was a recipe for punishment in my school, and I didn’t go anywhere extreme. Some teachers are just incompetent, that’s just life. It’s extremely regrettable, sometimes unfair, but there’s little the students can actually do about it unfortunately.

Honestly, I don’t hate SCHOOL ITSELF. I just hate the stress that school puts on us. I love learning the different subjects and getting to communicate with my peers, how ever, I hate the stress surrounding the school system e.g: tests, quizzes. However, most importantly, the BIGGEST reason I hate school is because of PRESSURE FROM PARENTS. Because of school giving us such hard tests etc, parents feel like they need to remind us to study every 5 mins. Maybe if the school didn’t put so much pressure on students, peers or parents wouldn’t either. And I wouldn’t be TAUGHT to hate school. Thank you for your time ☺️

We need emotional connection with what we learn. That's how we learn beyond memorization. The problem is that when we're not engaged with the subject, memorization won't become critical thinking. And thinking critically, specially when you spent too much time only memorizing and expecting the teachers answers instead of thinking about your own, is really hard and takes time. I wish school system stimulated critical thinking more... in my experience, that only became more important when I went to college, but it is a skill that should be taught since the first years of school.

Absolutely. Subjects at school are taught as just a bunch of facts we need to remember which is barely to do with the real world, when in fact it IS the study of the real world..just taught very badly. I am a first year uni student now and I bring my own passion and curiosity with me - without it, university would be very very dull and boring too. My subject is Real Estate, a subject which is very much changing with the world...and yet we still get taught too many theories. Theories are important too but I wish they would actually relate to what is happening rn, etc. That way we have an emotional connection with what we learn and go "ohhhh...so Thats what this is" instead of being thrown a bunch of isolated theories which seem useless. Every time I learn a new theoy which I find mind numbingly boring, I try to search up how it affects the world and real world examples, that way its super easy to learn things as opposed to having to beat it into your body.

As a teacher, we know a lot of these things but it's very very difficult to actually put any of it into action. The amount of administrative work, the teacher shortage creating more work for us, the fact that each teacher has over 100 students to think about, many with specific learning requirements, and a curriculum that's too packed to actually go into detail about anything, that we're discouraged from talking about anything not directly related to our subject area, and the increasing disrespect and disruption from students who don't want to be there... some days it feels impossible to just get through the content, let alone do a good job. I'm retraining to teacher librarianship because teaching is unsustainable and awful right now and the library is a place where I would be actually able to support students' interests. I know you're not implying at all that teachers aren't doing a good enough job, I just want to add some context. A lot of students and parents and politicians think (and tell us!) that we're just not engaging students enough. A lot of our training is about how to make our lessons more interesting. It's just not possible to do that for each bit of content, each class, each day.

One of the reasons I didn’t like school ( which was 4 decades ago), was simply that it didn’t matter how exciting the teachers tried to make it......... I’d still rather be at home, or on holidays, or doing something else 😮 Now, as a teacher (in Australia) I see things from ‘the other side of the coin’. Some of the ideas you discussed in the book, have been around in educational circles for decades. Some of these ideas sound fantastic in theory, but are really difficult to put into practice. I noticed that another of your viewers has also commented on this.

The fixed mindset one is soooo true! I used to think I was horrible at math, I always got decent grades but I usually never understood/ enjoyed studying maths. Just last year I had the equivalent to the SATs ( would determine my college position) and I got very anxious about maths so I studied on my own most of the topics I could think of. I got one of the highest percentages at my school and discovered that when I study maths on my own, I am capable of enjoying it, I just need a different approach to learn

It is so wholesome that there are people who really love learning and want to change the way that students are approached at school. From my experience, our attitude depends on our teachers, system, and the general way that school is seen in our environment. I went to school in Poland and our education system is often called 'Prussian school" for being focused on learning everything by heart, a huge amount of knowledge everyone needs to have to pass a year, and not letting students choose what they want to study until like 2nd year of high school (before that everyone is learning everything). That is why I wanted to go to university in the UK but I couldn't because of the finances. But now I am still here and we make fun of our syllabuses for being completely inadequate and stating that we should spend only 80 h on reading 54 books, learning about 50 topics (each for like 10 pages of pure notes we should know by heart) for an exam (one of 3-4) and write a 10 - 15 pages essay. Also, professors in Poland usually see their students as a burden and someone to test and push to their limits. They really often just decide to make 50% or more of them fail the exam just because they want to maintain the opinion of their class to be hard.

Loved this video, it was so interesting. As someone who has always found a big part of her self-esteem in school accomplishments, I feel like I’ve lost sight of the fun part of learning. The pressure of performing well in school is truly damaging to the mental health of boys and girls, especially if you’ve always been a good student, and your achievements are expected and taken for granted. I’m from Italy and in September I’m going to start my last year of highschool. I'm a little scared and after two years of on and off quarantine due to covid I feel a little lost. I want to make the most out of my school experience, without overthinking grades and teachers’ too high expectations of us. So I’m intent on making school more fun and interesting in all the little ways I can. :)

Thank you for mentioning the student's overall life too! I believe school could be more efficient and concise. Children need to discover and live and play so much ; teenagers and young adults are literally described as going through "an emotional thunderstorm" by many therapists. In my ideal world, schools are gentle and feel like a safe space, where everyone belongs 🙏🏻

I totally agree with this so much!! the teachers at my school never went into the classes with a good mindset either.. they were always running on empty and were never engaging us in the work itself. its probably not all their fault because the school system is putting an unnecessary amount of pressure to get us to a certain level, but if teachers just changed a few words in the way they were speaking to us, then that alone could get us more interested in the classes and work. like you were saying about how teachers say "you need to remember this because its on the exam", if they just said "this information will be useful in your future everyday life" etc then it gets us thinking that yeah, I probably need to know this not only for a good result, but for myself to do better in the future. Change in words could go a long way without them even realising it.

Not only we need to be curious, but we also need a good classroom and family environment. Interesting to hear your opinion on this subject. I fear that we are making learning feel like it is a job. Some people say that school environment is mundane. The meaning of this word is set to be boring or dul, but it shouldn't mean that, instead the opposite, because it comes from the Latin "mundus" which means the world, and the world is anything but boring or dul. in theory, my school covers most of these points- we are put into math and english classes based on skill which should solve the issue with desirable difficulty there is constant talk about growth mindsets and quotes are plastered on the walls there is a big focus on metacognition awards are given out for progress but it is not enjoyable whatsoever, despite many points being fullfilled. All of these have been forgotten or implemented in a useless or bad way. beyond the three sets we have for classes, nothing is tailored to the students ability. The ones further ahead still dont have anything to do, and the work is roughly similar for all sets growth mindsets are only mentioned in theory. The school does put much effort into actually talking about it. the progress awards are fine, but theyre given out barely as often as high grade praise, and any rewards are underwhelming, but that applies to all of the prizes.

To change the system is a big challenge, but absolutely necessary, I agree! Unfortunately, there will not be a black or white solution, just like it is for every other controversial problem in the world. However, I am optimistic that the „next generation“ of teachers will be having many inspiring views on education and hopefully will be motivated enough to actually implement something innovative. :)

So far in my degree I’ve failed 2 subjects (due to health issues in my first year), passed 4 and credited 4, my GPA is 3.5 (out of 7 in Australia). The university doesn’t seem to think these are particularly good grades, but I’ve studied things I enjoy and learnt so many cool things. However, one of my biggest goals is to go on exchange and study overseas for a year but for that you need a 4.5 GPA (some unis want a 5). It’s really annoying to me as I believe I’ve learnt enough and have enough skills to study overseas, but I have to pander to the uni in order to “get the desirable grades”.

I got burntout in 7th grade, then I moved schools the following year ( in the pandemic) and then the workload was less and I was happy with it but online school was BORING. The year after that was ACTUALLY interesting but last year was SORTA stressful but the stress was mostly motivating, I just IGNORED the demotivating stress lol and I did the best I could with the info I had ( like I thought that I was giving it my all but I rlly wasn't. I COULD have done better but I am not too bothered by that). Then this year, I guess I fell into a habit of procrastinating because school is both MORE boring and mum pressured the HELL out of me and now I am just unable to get out. The only way out I see is working more. Idk WHEN the therapy that I am taking will work tho. As an AuDHD'er school is arguably worse. Next year is my final year of school so I need to do a 180 ASAP.

I love school, seeing my friends and teachers every day is fun for me. It's just the exams and homework stress that I despise :\ and of course, stress and peer pressure from parents and other students...

the issue i've always had with school, esp in the last few years is that there are some things that i'm not 'naturally good at' (i,e math), and i also just straight up hate. so it feels like a waste of time to put all this extra effort into something that i hate doing and makes me miserable, yet school demands that i do just that

I never struggled with many subjects in school except for science, but I get so depressed thinking abt school…I hope sophomore year will be better but I was considering graduating early. I used to love school before but high school changed it all, even though I never really struggled academically, just mentally. If all goes well maybe I will graduate with my class :)

Even my teachers themselves tell me that they hate having to make exams because they rather value what the student did throughout the entire year than what they do in one day, a day that might not be going well for the student. On my own experience: I was doing well on Music class last year as I love music. But I couldn't attend the most important exam even when I tried (I wanted to go even after getting no sleep and ending up puking at 4 am) and because I couldn't go to the doctor either, I ended up getting a really big impact on my grade. I talked with the teacher and to my surprise (A surprise because a year ago I thought all teachers agreed with the school system and how it functioned haha) he agreed with me and explained how he thought I was a wonderful student and person, and how unfair it was that due to me feeling unwell one day out of the entire year I would get a negative impact on my grade for something out of my control. What I am trying to say with this is that even as we might think teachers are disconnected from the students. Most of the time they aren't. They probably agree with you on a lot of things! Like how flawed the school system is. I thankfully started high school the exact same year some changes and rules were applied. And I'm so thankful for that as I think I would have failed if the high school I attend was still going by the old rules. (For context on this last part) THE OLD RULES: Basically the way it was played out here in Uruguay was that no matter how good or bad you did throught the school year, if you failed the final exam you would instantly fail that class (Or pass the class if you passed the exam) Naturally this is very flawed and VERY stress inducing (I am a very anxious person and just by thinking about having to study for twelve exams that would determine my final grade makes me feel dizzy) . So they decided to change it up and go with newer, fairer less flawed rules THE NEW RULES: Basically this new system is like the complete opposite of the older system, it rewards students that do good while giving students that aren't doing very well a chance to pass. If you have good grades on every single class, you will get notified and be able to start summer vacations an entire month early. But if you have at least ONE class with a bad grade, you will be notified to come to school ONLY for the specific classes you have bad grades on, this will be a period of around 3 to 4 weeks, in which the teacher will have a normal class but putting great emphasis in asking questions about what the class is working on. And on the last class, the teacher will decide who did good enough to pass the class, and who didn't. Those that pass the class will end usually with a score of 6 (Minimum to pass), and those who didn't will have to go through the big final boss exam. Which contains everything done in the year, to be able to pass the class once completed. The trick is however, that if you go through the entire next school year without being able to pass this exam, you won't be able to pass to the next grade. So you'll be stuck until you finish this exam. This system not only gives students that for whatever reason don't have the required grade to pass specific classes a last final chance to be able to prove themselves and get a good enough grade to pass, but it also rewards students who could get to the end of November without having ANY insufficient grade in any of the 11 classes. And it also works as motivation for the people that are close to having good grades on each class. As this final little push could be the difference between them starting their summer vacations a whole month early, or having to not only come for 4 more weeks, but also to risk failing the class. Sorry for writing so much but I wanted to share this, as this system (That I do not know if it's implemented in other countries) feels like a VERY GOOD alternative to what schools usually do.

Some countries have a system where one grade has different levels. I know in the dutch systen they have mavo, havo, etc. It's quite interesting.

I'm slightly fearful of going back to college (in the UK) at the age of 31 to do the access to nursing course, so that I can go on to do a nursing degree. However, I do have a lot of curiosity in the topic. When I'm at work on the weekend and helping to restock the treatment rooms, as I work in a hospital, I spend 5 seconds or so just looking at the medical equipment I'm stocking up like the 20ml, 15ml, 10ml, 5ml, 2.5ml syringes, the blue, orange, gold cap blood collectors, the bungs, the tourniquet, the machines that the nurses use. I just hope that I do well in the course. It's human biology, psychology and social studies.

"memorisation is a precursor to practical thinking" *"Knowledge is more important than imagination, because you can only imagine so far as your knowledge goes. If you take language you can only imagine or explain stuff on your limiting vocabulary and not beyond it because you don't even know that there's more you could imagine. We understand things in the basic concepts that we memorized."* Reminds me of a book called "the giver" where everyone sees the world in a monotonous colour just grey- I never thought about it till now but how would you know what colour an apple would be like if you don't know what red even is?

One thing about the growth mindset that i dont particularly like is its lack of realism in certain situations. My dads a teacher at a college and he sees quite often kids who are predicted DDD (or worse) saying I want to do medicine or law or some top class degree which they realistically can't and don't get into. It's hard because I want to encourage the growth mindset but at the same time if its going to take twice as long to do something as it would for someone else then is it really worth it for that person? I think the narrative that anyone can do anything is kinda misleading idk. Thoughts?

I would agree but I also think it's important for someone to learn that themselves and to support them along the way. Better to try and realise its not worth it than to never try and always wonder what if. Additionally most teenagers may have a big dream that they are set on regardless of others expectations of them but eventually they themselves will learn if what they want is their true dream or not

I used to think I was really bad at maths until I hit 9th grade and all of a sudden aced all the exams, then I proceeded to slowly drop off again (probably because I hated my teachers and they certainly didn't like me that much either). In my last semester of school I tried to turn around a grade with a high effort in participation which is something I always struggled with and my teacher was like: "Nah, I don't like you, I'll grade you like that never happened.". Ended up doing pretty well in the final exam at school and proceeded to go to engineering school where I really liked maths and did quite well. So remember the system is heavily flawed, don't let them doubt based on what they think you can and can't do and being bad at something in school doesn't really mean anything.
