On my watchmaker school we learn to use grease in the bearings where the arbours pivots are in to minimize friction. As well as everywhere else where friction is big.

I only just found your channel, and you showed me the best way yet to lubricate pallet jewels. This is after 13 years, mind. That is much appreciated. On the other hand, the comment about Chinesium junk being less expensive than Bergeon--yeah, it is. And it will behave cheap, and fail you. I'm not a Bergeon cheerleader, and I don't care for the inflated cost of their products. But after messing around with other winders, again for a while, I bit the bullet and bought the Bergeon set. No disappointments, except it doesn't make me drinks.

I really LOVE your Videos man! Detailed, good shots with perfect views, and you mention the correct Part-Numbers and Products. I learned a lot by your Videos. Regarding the Mainspring, i prefer a different technique, i lubricate the MS by sliding it to my Gloves protected Fingers as it gives more control to evenly spread the Oil. But both ways work, and the result is what counts.

Incredible macro work! Very impressive. I’ve never thought to put the spring in the winder and then fit the arbour. I’ve always hooked it onto the arbour and then place in the winder tool.

@@therealwatchdoctor Hi, thanks for the compliment. I think your channel is great . You will get there for sure. Your camera work is excellent and you don’t need to talk . Look at red dead restorations in n only a few months he has become the biggest channel. All about the ASMR genre he is focusing on. Always be sure to use all tags on the back end, good descriptions. Thumb nails to me are so important. It’s what will draw a new audience in and your only real advert. Since changing mine I’ve see. Good growth. You also find that as you grow the speed of subs goes up. Took me a year for 1000, 1 year later I was at 10k and now nearly another year on 21k . Just keep the content uploads consistent (if you can. I struggle with this) the algorithm likes regular new content.

It only takes me a lot off time to make a new video, but i think that's normal. But when the subs are happy with that and I see my channel is growing every day that gives me satisfaction to go on. Very nice method indeed, nice work, I like how the hp1300 seeps through the spring leaves in the barrel, an alternative to moistening a small folded piece of paper with hp1300 and pulling the mainspring through its length Thank you 😊

Thanks for this video. As myretrowatches has stated (and I myself included) I have never thought of putting the mainspring into the winder first. I've always put it onto the arbour of the winder first. We live and learn. I have a ETA 2750 movement in bits which will go through the cleaning machine, be reassembled and lubricated. Has any one tried Moebius 9415 grease on the pallet stones/escape wheel teeth?

I'm currently servicing a ETA 2846 which is nearly identical to the 2824-2 except for the lower beat rate. So just to confirm, no pre-oiling the spring with cots and 8200 grease just drop it on the top and it will spread as the spring operates?

Excellent video quality and presentation! If I may, I would like to ask a bit about the China made mainspring winder that you used. I assume the barrels are movement specific but can they be used with other movements? The barrel arbors go in just one direction? Can you interchange the barrel arbors so you can use barrels for both left and right winding? I am looking into buying on of those set and the prices on ebay and other online stores are a bit expensive for me and would like to be sure that I am buying the right tool. Thank you and stay safe!

Hi, could you please explain me why to put oil on the mainspring? I used to to this initially, but there actually is no friction between the spring spirals since they will just expand and contract without sliding, right? I just grease the barrel walls, and oil the arbor where in contact with the barrel shells, will this cause problems? Of course I check for wear of the barrel inside, indicating a spring out of plane, in which case I just replace both spring and barrel... thank you, your lesson on the pallet fork jewels lubrication helped me A TON!

An excellent tutorial. I have a set of the Chinese winders and am learning. However, I have problems winding. The central diameter area of the spring is larger than the arbour on the winder. The arbour does not grip successfully. Is it possible that you could tell me of a work around please? Thank you.

How useful is that Chinese barrel winder set for working on old pocket watches?

I have been trying for the better part of a year to figure out what’s the best braking grease to use. I have used the Rolex brand graphite, tepa, novostar graphite, and finally Kluber p125 which I have decided to keep using. I paid a lot for the tepa, but do not trust it. Every time I see a broken 3135 mainspring, I also see TEPA. I ended up giving it away after using 1.5ML and 2 mainsprings break out of around 50. What do you think?

How did you catch t-shape hooks into the barrel inner and outer? There are some holes inside and on the lid. Tried many times myself. The lid was not closing propery

Thanks for this excellent video! I learned a lot! Anyway, I never heard anyone explain why there are six grooves inside the mainspring barrel. My theory is that the braking grease should be applied inside those grooves, as placing the braking grease beside the grooves will make the grease stick to the outside wall of the mainspring winder barrel when the mainspring is pushed into the barrel, thereby removing most of the grease from the mainspring barrel or pushing the grease to the floor/bottom of the mainspring barrel. So, in this respect I'm not sure your method is optimal. Anyway, I'm humble so if you can elaborate on this I'd be very interested. Thank you!

If you watch video closely,he puts a note out there the grooves, he calls it holes.. that’s were the excess grease collects in. If you put grease in the grooves the bridle is not going to get an grease. Hope this makes sense

Why hp1300 on the spring at the end ? Everyone’s seems to do this now but my understanding is that you just want a light coat with grease so it doesn’t tarnish. Now all the work you did on the klauber is negated bc if contamination.

Enjoying you videos! The winder set calls out specific calibers. Can this be a general use winder for many other calibers? I’m a hobbyist working on older watches that don’t use the “popular” calibers. I assume I can find a holder in this set that is close enough in size to work. Any thoughts?

Hello Chris, thanks for your comment! This winder set could definitely be used on other calibers as the specific numbers. "I can find a holder in this set that is close enough in size to work" = true! But you also have to check that the hook also corresponds to the required direction of the spring. I haven't come across a spring that I couldn't wind with this set ;-)

Thanks Black Mamba, it depends on which brand you working on and the age of the watch an the overhaul state of the watch. In this example, in my opinion it was not necessary with this Junghans Max Bill. For Omega, Longines, Tissot, Hamilton,... and some other brands I have to change the mainspring every time because this is prescribed according to their requirement and the customers pay for that so.

Hi I’m just curious about mainspring oiling , because from school taught shall not oil the mainspring but only oil the drum inner wall with P125. I truly believe u did right but hope u can advise me more . Because I really doubt in this

I also learned that in school, my teacher always said that there are actually different possibilities and that lubrication is actually not necessary, but if you do it, you should certainly not exaggerate in quantity. I prefer this way, maybe it makes me mentally feel better to know that the spring has been given extra lubrication :-)

Great video, and great close up shots too ! I have seen some people lubricating the mainspring by rubbing it with grease (Moebius 8300 for example) before putting it in the winder, is it acceptable to do that too ? thanks, and your videos are getting better everytime :)

Hello MrAxollpaoli, there are different techniques you can use to lubricate the mainspring. This is also a good technique if you do it properly.

Hi I had a jeweler check a watch with eta 2824 and he said it needed a main spring and to be oiled and service with a 1 year warranty for $150 is that good or bad on price ?

I think it's the same, only the color is different. I only have 1 of that 0.18 size. If you want to use different oils or grease with the same small tip size its maybe easier to use 2 different oilers (of the same size) so you have to clean it less frequently or so.

All you me Kluber sticks to your tool. It is a design flaw because greasing was not taking into account and the tool is a tad to large in diameter. I therefor prefer the manual method. Much more control over the greasing (which is most important).

And the secret is? Notes to hobby watchmakers: you don't have to own the spring widner and the barrel closing tool, this could be done by hand rather easily. And the graphite grease is not a must, you can use lithium or in worse case any other thick grease instead. Graphite is like a "historical" thing.
