I hope this video helps you to see how the tempo of a horse has such an impact on their balance. Thank you for watching 🙂

She is so beautiful. Sorry you had to put her down. So glad I found your videos. They have helped me a great deal. Looking forward to my horse coming home from trainer so I can put into practice. Your training is so similar and will really help me remember the things I should be doing. Thank you for being real and sharing your mistakes too. It helps knowing its ok.

I loved how you showed that you Re-ask for a retest after you give a correction when she did not listen to soft voice command. So many people are not even taught to do that and many don’t even realize that it should be done or just simply to get and keep on.

This was a really nice visual. I have a 10 yo gelding that has had a lot of owners, inconsistent riding and training, and trauma including being starved more than once. As a result, he’s still very green and has no idea how to balance himself, especially at the canter. I also just acquired a 4-5 yo mare that’s said to be broke to ride but I’m assuming she hasn’t had a proper foundation so I know she will need this as well. I’m very visual so it’s really helpful to be able to see it and have some one point out what I’m seeing in “real time”.

The side reins are very short. First you need to use longer ones , and it is better to use chambon.
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 3 жыл бұрын
I don't believe my side reins are too short and I was using side reins to help this mare stay on the circle and not "fall out'. A chambon cannot do that but I do use one if the horse has a little difficulty understanding that I want them to lower his head and stretch. This mare did not need a chambon but did need a little help staying on the circle line hence the side reins.

Perhaps he is getting the wrong signals from you. You will need to be sure and not "step in front" of him. You only need to be a smidge in front of the "drive line" of a horse and they will either stop of turn towards you. Next time you try to lunge him be aware of where you are and what your body is doing. Point your bellybutton in the direction you want him to go. I don't mean turn your whole body that way just ensure that you are "pointing" in the direction you want him to go. 🙂

Having the lunge line go through the bit ring and clipped to the D ring on the front of the saddle helps with the inside bend on the lunge.

Hi Tammy, There is a link in the upper right-hand corner of the video in a "card" that pops up. I put it in right at the end of the video so you might have missed it. Thank you for telling me as I have now added a link in the description so others don't miss it too. I will add it here for you 🙂. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbxxbJOgldy0gIU.html

This is a really helpful video! Out of curiosity, do you have any advice/recommendations for working with a horse who rears in the barn? Trying to get my girl used to being in the barn and tying in there, but she tends to rear and try to run out (without being tied--we're doing baby steps :) ) when I ask her to stand in the stall for the cross-tie.
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 3 жыл бұрын
I would tackle that one step at a time - just like it sounds like you are doing. Let her be comfortable being in there before you tie her. Make sure she understands being tie before tying her in the barn. Both pieces individually and then I would put them together. I hope that helps.

I had asked about the canter on the longe, but i can see we need to work more on the trot. Her head really lifts and she hollows out. I am just using halter and attached reins.. could I use side reins without a bit?
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Aj I am not a huge fan of side reins on young/green/unbalanced horses as they use their head and neck to balance themselves. If I remember correctly I put them on Abbey here because she was falling out and they can help with straightness BUT I always have them on the longer side...just enough to help control the shoulder.

Do you do any cues or anything with the whip or lunge line to help them find their balance/tempo like pull with your hand or push your hand forward. Or do you let them sort it out without doing much?
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bethany, that is a fabulous question and thank you for asking. Yes, I do have a process I follow. When the horse (and this is any horse, not just a young one) is rushing on the lunge I slowly make the circle smaller by keeping the "feel" on the lunge as consistent as I can. As soon as the horse slows down I release the pressure on the lunge line. I don't just drop the contact but there is increased pressure as I am bringing them in and then that increased pressure ceases. This works because it is harder for the horse to go fast on a small circle. I do allow them a little bit of time to sort it out in the beginning as you saw in this video with Abbey. Some horses you will spend the entire lunge lesson just trying to help them stop rushing on the lunge. I hope that helps 😀

Hello. How long do you recommend doing this exercise going one way? I have a horse that just wants to run and is having hard time to relax :/
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, with a horse that wants to "run" I would do walk, trot, walk transitions until the horse will walk calmly on the lunge and then trot calmly. So in the trot as soon as I saw they were going to speed up I would get them to walk. I hope that helps you and your horse 🙂
