A step by step tutorial to knitting M1L and M1R for beginners
►►► VIEW THE FULL BLOG POST HERE: nimble-needles.com/stitches/h...
Make one left and make one right are two easy ways to increase knitting stitches for beginners. They form a pair so you can increase a project evenly on both sides.
M1L is a left-leaning increase and M1R a right-leaning increase. Both are created by picking up the yarn between two stitches. For M1L you pick it up so it leans to the left (so from the front) and for M1R you pick it up so it leans to the right (so from the back). Then you knit this extra loop twisted which prevents an eyelet from being formed.
You can knit the increase on the return row like a regular stitch.

I'm always so impressed with your tutorials, and this one is no exception. I loved how you explained the way to remember which way to insert the needle, as well as why you need to twist the stitch. I'll never have to look up M1R or M1L again!

Thanks Norman, the mnemonic I use is to Make 1 Right pick up from the Rear. I am dyslexic and I have difficulty discerning the lean of the fibre. Eventually I abbreviated the reminder to Right Rear. It works for me. 🙃. Love the demonstration. Thank you very much.

Your tutorials are simplified for both returners and beginner knitters. After a few failed garments, hey presto, with your help I have just completed a gorgeous cardigan for my granddaughter. I am now starting on Christmas socks for friends ( yes I know Christmas is a while away)🤣. But after watching your tutorial for beginners socks, I can’t put my needles down. You are simply the best on KZfaq. Keep them coming🥰

this was so helpful, especially the part with the little diamond shaped swatch explaining about the ridge! the pattern i'm working on calls for an increase at the sides of my work instead of in the middle like something raglan shaped so i got quite confused about which one had to go where😄

Hi I’m sure you did a tutorial on how to get the holes that are formed either side of a raglan strip looking the same. When I do my M1L etc the holes on either side are not uniform. I’m sure you showed us a technique to combat this but I can’t find it!

@Norman My pattern requires K1 M1L, knit across, M1R, K1. Then again on the purl row, which is where I am getting confused. Can you help me with this so the sts on both side lean correctly. My M1PR into the M1L St on the row below gets messed up. There's something I am not doing correctly. Thank you for your help. Does M1PR lean L on the K side?

I'm sorry but I still don't have the full picture. Lets say my pattern increase says "M1" at the end of the row on the right side, and "M1" on beginning of the row on the wrong side, do I do a M1L, flip and then a M1R? Or do I stick with one?
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 2 жыл бұрын
hm..that would be a kind of strange pattern. You cannot knit a m1l at the end of the row. and even if you could, stacking these increases without a row in between is a bad idea.
@tic857
@tic857 2 жыл бұрын
@@NimbleNeedles oh I see. Does that mean most patterns only make an increase on either the right or wrong side, and not both? The pattern I'm working on is for a hooded scarf and it says: RS: K34, M1, K1 WS: K1, M1, K to the end Repeat until you reach 55 stitches. The whole project is garter stitch. Is this sort of increase unusual? My frustration has been I don't know whether do to M1R or M1L. And its not clear to me whether M1R or L is talking about the result of the whole edge sloping upward right or left, or if it is referring to a stitch position and direction similar to how you see a bar for purl and a V for knit.
