I needed to make a small pulley for a contraption that I'm building.
It goes on a small geared motor. :)

We're not jealous, are we? When I heard him say it, I thought "Oh, crap! That sounds expensive! Hope he didn't break anything!!" I can't fathom why anyone would think "Now, why would he tell us how much it costs!!" It's Cosmas' video. He can comment on whatever he wants. Whether his gear costs that much or not should be nobody's business.

great video and job on the pulley cosmas. when i have to cross drill a round part i use the ruler method, you put a short steel ruler between the part and the drill bit if the ruler is level with the drill press table you`re on center. it`s an old trick someone passed me many years ago. thanks for sharing. take care. pete

Nice job! One thought: I winced when you drilled the center hole without any fluid (oil). I'm a knifemaker and drill steel often - usually high-carbon (sometimes hardened!) steel, using fairly high-quality bits (like cobalt and occasionally carbide). While using cutting/tapping fluid isn't *necessary* for just mild steel, it leaves a much cleaner -- and actually *rounder* hole, and is much kinder to your drill bits. Even a plain 3-in-1 type oil is far better than none...

Have you tried out the motor? It is one of those cheap 7 bucks geared motor thingys from china right? Do they feel as strong as you expected and as they are rated? Fantastic finish btw, did not think 600. would be enough for that mirror finish.
@CosmasBauer

Yes, it seems to be ok. Yep I was pretty surprised, too. I thougt that you would need at least 1000 grit to produce a somewhat mirror finish.

Good day Mr Bauer, I have just been looking at your video, making that curved pulley wheel on your 2x72 belt grinder. A great job and well accomplished. I am still learning metal work and machining. I have two questions for you. I don't want to injure myself, so why is it not good to wear gloves when working at a drill press? Also, did you build your belt grinder? I am looking at different ideas for making my own grinder. Any chance of some pictures of your grinder. Have a good day. Kind regards Basil.

Drill bit can easily catch your glove, then your finger, hand... If you are using the big factory drill press, it will cut you in half. Same with the lathe. Usually if it is for machining metal, it can easily kill you if you're not careful. Similar fun is with long hair or long sleeves.

Back in high school a classmate walked past the lathe and caught his sleeve on the metal rod sticking out the end. Was very, very lucky to get away with only heavy bruising and needing a new shirt (and probably new underwear).
